WR Brian Thomas Jr., JAX (4 Viewers)

he’s running through zones instead of finding a hole and camping in it. Pro WRs who like to stay healthy learn that tactic very quickly. TLaw needs to understand that as well, but if his WR is on the move he’s going to throw where he’s going. If BTJ sits down in a hole, that’s where TLaw should deliver it.
Please forgive my ignorance, but doesn’t this have to do with the play call rather than BTJ “learning” to do whatever mid-route?

Like, if it’s a post or a button hook or a slant or a seam or… isn’t BTJ going where the play design sends him? You’re not saying he’s out there winging it on every play, right?

My understanding is that route runners run routes, and it’s the QBs job to 1. Find the open man, 2. Deliver a catchable ball to that man, and 3. Not get him killed in the process (e.g. “hospital ball”). Is that not true?
Routes change based on pre snap reads and post snap determinations. If Defender does X then you do Y, If Defender does Z then You do the Funky Chicken etc.

There are plenty of routes that are pre-determined but many require multiple adjustments in real time.

If sitting down in a zone or finishing a crossing pattern is an option on a given play it's something both QB and WR generally need to read individually and draw the same conclusion.

This guy is afraid of contact. The film shows it. Establish The Run is trashing his willingness to play in the slot.
There’s contact and then there’s suicide.
💯 but I understand there were others than that murder ball. I haven't seen a video of all his targets yet but, would love to.
Waldman did a pretty good breakdown of all 12 targets, 1 by 1. He pointed out a couple alligator arms, but way more business decisions.

Mixed bag, but my biggest takeaway was that TLaw needs to help his receivers out way more and try to get them killed way less.
Yeah, it’s funny because to me most of the clips show TLaw throwing hospital balls.

One appeared egregious. There were a couple where it really looks like BTJ gets the ol' alligator arms. He would have gotten hit but they were balls he should have contested. Then there was one to the sideline that he just made a really weak effort on IMO. No defender was going to level him but he probably would have had to jump and land hard. Still, the guys gotta go get a few of those balls.

As with most things reality lies somewhere in the middle.

For sure. But the root cause is a QB who has lost the confidence of his WR because of his penchant for throwing hospital balls.

I won't argue against that.

That’s how I see em. It’s easy to look at BTJ pulling up on a route and blame him for whatever happens, but it’s also somewhat easy to look at what was coming at him and understand that he wouldn’t make it through a half of football if he tried to catch those. Hell, he might not make it through a series on one drive. Just egregiously poor ball placement.

There were definitely at least 2. Waldman pointed them out as well.

But I’m also in agreement with Waldman that the important take-away is a dude who’s getting 12 targets. So long as the target share remains, we can collectively hope that Lawrence starts putting the ball where it can be caught without a trip to the blue tent.

If the targets disappear it might be time to panic.

I was able to get him for Pickens straight up in a redraft league. I sent the offer hoping to get a counter, but he just took it. He was worried about the wrist, his effort and Lawrence, i guess.
as a BTJ shareholder I’d reject that instantly with no counter. That’s a significant overreaction IMO.
I agree with you. I normally wouldn't send that kind of offer, but i saw all of the negative comments about BTJ being soft and mailing it in, so I tried it. I was surprised he took it.
I haven't won the trade yet though. Pickens may still outscore him this year.

Way too bleak of talk in here IMO

Data points in play

-High Pedigree Player coming in

-great rookie season

-two bad weeks

I dont see how the final one tells the tale on 2025

Effing stealing. Nice job lol.

You never know how people feel until you make the trade!
Maybe.

I think Pickens is about to explode. As soon as this week.

I’ve been high on the Jaguars all off-season because I believe in Coen, but I think I may have discounted Baker Mayfield’s influence on the locker room and HIS impact.

Lawrence’s guys don’t look all too interested in playing with him.

I'm pretty sure I can get Nico for him if I add Maye or Daniel Jones from a beleaguered Burrow owner.

Would ye?
I'm trying to get Nico from a guy right now for him....no luck
Do you think the Nico outlook is decidedly superior to the BTJr outlook enough to throw in one of the QBs I mentioned?
Depends on the league man. Depends on the owner. Mine is a five man keeper, 14 team, and folks are reluctant to deal with me. I think it is enough but you never know what the other guy is thinking. Like above, BTJ for Pickens s/u I'd never offer but someone did and it was received. Good luck.

Look up the Tampa Bays offense first two weeks last year. At least it may give you hope.

Tampa put up 37 week 1. But week 2 and 3 they did play two excellent defenses and combined for 27 points.

I am begrudgingly giving him one more chance. I took him in the 10th in a keeper league last year and thought he was one of my best keepers ever. Now it's week 3 and I am considering benching him for a guy who looked like he might be retired 2 months ago.

I'm with you. One more chance. I want to sit him because i do have some options on the bench including Judkins and Egbuka but i just think that he's do for a blowup. Same with AJ Brown honestly...he gets this week and then he gets the bench

Same. I can go with safe solid production from Connor or who the heck knows what i'll get from Devonta but giving Mr Thomas another go

No choice in a 14 teamer unless I flex and go Sampson.

It's a punt. It's a prayer.

Thanks for nothing DoOooOVaL dorkasaurus

Im experiencing cognitive dissonance thinking this is as bad as it seems but I don't recall a falloff like this since maybe Michael Gallup
Has there ever been a rookie with the kind of pedigree Thomas has that hit so big year 1 and failed so bad year 2 without some kind of obvious thing like an injury?

Trent Richardson?
I was thinking receiver but yeah you nailed it
Yeah receiver would have to think, Gallup was year 2 when he brook out (relatively) and then was a non factor the rest of his career.

and even his breakout was relatively minor to Thomas. WR2 season vs WR1 season. And 3rd round pick vs 1st round pick. But I got nothing....so maybe Thomas will figure it out at some point is a good buy low?

Michael Clayton. 1193 yards in his rookie season. Never more than 500 the rest of his career.

Yep there it is. He was a 1st round pick as well. Better movie than football player.
