WR Clyde Gates-Miami Dolphins (1 Viewer)

Ministry of Pain

I have been impressed and think he is a perfect compliment to Marshall. i know he is likely gonna start WR4 but he will pass Hartline and that means he will line up on the outside a lot with Bess in the slot, Marshall wide on the other side I like this kid and the Phins have got to get him on the field. He has speed speed speed, think someone in the mold of a Antonio Brown for the Steelers.

5-11, 195 lbs, decent size for a speed guy, big time sleeper, in dynasty he is much better known,

Grabbed this guy in several rookie drafts. His vertical speed in his highlight tapes reminded me a lot of Ochocinco. I don't know if he has the same innate receiving skills, but purely from a physical standpoint he's one of the more impressive rookies in this class. Here's his deep catch from tonight's game.

One thing that has me a little bit cautious about his potential is that he's old for a rookie. 25, IIRC.

I took him at the end of the third in my rookie draft but had to drop him for our FA draft a week ago. His age concerns me too. I figure for a guy of his age, he needs to show something fast, or he may never get going. And since he hadn't really shown much in preseason, I decided he was expendable. I also don't think Henne is the QB to take advantage of his speed.

Definitely good value in rookie drafts. I expect him to be 3rd on the team in targets
This year? Not a chance with Marshall, Bess, and Bush around. He also is very unlikely to outperform Hartline this year, or even Fasano who will get 30-40 catches. The rookie will get a little experience this year (maybe in the neighborhood of 20 catches), that's all anyone should expect. Then, if he has what it takes, his role will expand next year.

depends on who else they sign - Gates barely made an appearance last year - they have to sign Manningham or Meachem or someone . . .

I'm not sure Gates is a great dynasty stash. He might have opportunity but he is an old 2nd year guy (26 in June). Even if he gets opportunity I really don't see him as more than a nice depth guy. But if the price is right there isn't anything wrong with taht either.

It is for one that hasn't really shown very much on the field.
I was definitely expecting more than 2 catches for 8 & 11 yards on 12 targets. He did have one nice 77 yard return, but only averaged 25 outside of that. Aside from the one play, this guy's speed isn't translating onto the field on game days. Not good when that's supposed to be your bread and butter. Even as a raw prospect, I was a little excited about Gates as a last round rook pick last year. It was the same spot I drafted Wallace, who was also considered raw at the time. Combine numbers were fairly identical... thought I found a gem in the rough. But if Gates doesn't light it up this preseason, I doubt he ever will. I'll stash him away on a 40-man roster up to week one for the long shot, but there are much better prospects to keep on a shorter bench IMO. Nate Washington is on a lot of wires, for example, and would be an absolute steal if Peyton comes to town, especially if Britt gets another visit from the injury bug.
