WR Deebo Samuel, WAS (1 Viewer)

As Deebo's biggest fan here are the two things I want him to work on this off season -

1 Soft tissues.  I don't care if he takes up hot yoga or ballet or whatever, but my dude needs to do something in order to stop tweeking those soft tissues.

2 Drops.  I know a big part of it is that he's always looking for the big run after the catch, but you gotta secure it first.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the team does not plan to change Deebo Samuel's stretch-run 2021 usage for 2022.

Samuel, of course, became the 49ers' change-of-pace running back in addition to his typical receiving threat. This meant his snaps decreased while the number of hits he took increased, but the results were simply lethal. “This way you can make sure he gets touches,” Shanahan reasoned of Samuel's evolved role. “We all know how good Deebo is at (running back) and the defense does, too. And so knowing that he can be there at any time, just like knowing when a quarterback can be a threat to run at any time — all that stuff is unusual in how to treat personnel groupings and things like that. And that’s why that’s something I don’t see going away for him.” Samuel's new position — something he calls "wide back" — comes as he heads into a contract year, but the 49ers say they have it "budgeted" in. Considering how well the system and player fit, we're sure both sides will be keen to hammer out an extension before Week 1.

This guy essentially created a new position, killed it and doesn’t get a single vote for offensive player of the year 🤦‍♂️

Same with Bosa. Derwin James and Dak got votes for comeback player of the year but Bosa got shutout.

He had 15.5 sacks and played 20 games after shredding his knee last season.

Ridiculous.

He was the only reason for me to watch 49er games early then as he caught fire the rest of the team seemed to catch up. He was must watch tv then rewatch tv.

I was thinking the same thing. New quarterback and Shanny smashing him in the running game has me thinking last year is probably as good as it gets and injury is going to be tough to avoid with how he plays.

If Mostert is back next season there won't be as much of a need to use Deebo out of the backfield IMO. This season they were missing the 1 in the 1-2 RB punch. Mostert and Mitchell should handle most of the running game, even though I can see Deebo getting a carry or 2 a week.

In 2021, he had just 6 carries in the first 5 weeks. Then starting in week 10 he averaged over 5 carries per game. In the playoffs he had 10, 10, and 7 carries.

If SFs RB1 and RB2 are both healthy, I dont see Deebo getting carries like he did this season.

Mostert is 29, and has ended his last two seasons prematurely with injury.

I’m not optimistic that he’ll have a major role - maybe COP.

And with the draft capital they spent on Sermon, I have to think he has a shot at carries at some point. They moved up in the 3rd to get him, and he was a pretty decent back in college. I don’t think he passes Mitchell on the depth chart, but he should have a shot at passing up Hasty and Mostert.

As for Deebo, Shanny has come out and said he has no intentions of changing Deebo’s role on offense. He liked using him as a WR/RB, and it’s been effective.

like others, I share the concerns about the punishment he’s going to take in such a role, and moreover, I have concerns about his contract situation with that in mind.

Word around the Bay Area is that Deebo wants to be paid like a top receiver. Word also is that the 49ers might point to his receiving numbers and balk at such a proposal, which is kind of messed up because he’s been so good running the ball.

So in that light, he’s a player who I’d try to move if I had shares. His perceived value is pretty high, but his contract could become a troubling issue, and I share the concern with others that when utilized so much as a RB that he’s taking a lot more hits than most WRs.

Definite sell high, but man is he fun to watch.

He sounds immature.
Not hardly.

He’s pretty underpaid, in fact. there have been rumblings that the Niners don’t want to pay him as much as elite receivers because his receiving #s aren’t there. But since they use him as a RB, that’s a pretty jacked up approach.

if that’s true, j don’t blame him a bit.

IDK...

Warner didn't get a new deal til June. Kittle's deal was in August. I think Derebo gets a deal before the season.

It’s all a negotiation. Like the article says, bc Jimmy and his 25 mil are still on the books, they’re stuck.

They’re being stubborn with whatever they think Jimmy’s trade value is and probably waiting until the draft to see if they can get anyone to bite on a 2nd rounder. It’s a game but at least they’re trying to maximize the return.

i think it’s more because he can’t throw until June.  Colts specifically cited that as why they were out, IIRC.

once he proves he can throw, they’ll get offers.

He sounds immature.
How many Instagram deletions does it take to become immature?

Do you have a set number? Like, if a guy has 6 photos he has deleted, you think that is mature, adult, and reasonable.

But if someone deletes 20 Instagram pics, it's a sign they need to grow up, maybe be more a of team player, an adult would never delete that many pictures?

1.

Apparently Deebo, Metcalf and AJ Brown all have the same agent. He'll leverage those contracts against each other, folks are going to get paid.

Solid Lombardi tweet:

List of relevant facts:

-Deebo is under his rookie contract through 2022
-It’s in his interest to net big-time financial security before he next takes the field
-49ers have cap maneuverability to do it
-It’s April

List of irrelevant facts:

-Instagram behavior

Say you've never had a social media account without saying you've never had a social media account

Again, this is just a new negotiation tactic.   How is it any different from a player going to the media and saying that he'd love to play with his college qb (coughdevonteadamscough) or that it's always been his dream to play for his home town?

Nice first line. Now use oligarch!

As far as Deebo goes, he's 26, so he is basically a child. I am all for labor getting their fair share, its what I do for a living. Scrubbing your social media account, its the equivalent of throwing a hissy fit. He is threatening to break up with them so they come crawling back and give him what he wants.

You can negotiate without acting like a child.

Apparently this is incorrect.

Lombardi and Deebo need to check with middle aged guys to make sure his Instagram behavior is appropriate.

The problem is these young players. You never heard about this back in my day. Junior Seau never altered his Snapchat while suffering enough concussions to make him kill himself. Lawrence Taylor never deleted any pics from his social media when he was smoking crack and hiring underage prostitutes. You know why?

Because they were mature. I don't know who these "adults" are, who think they can delete any old photos they want from their own social media, but this aggression will not stand, man.

I don't know how football fans are supposed to root for any of these players, what with them altering their social media and all. Forget about hissy fit, this is Deebo driving over to every 49er fans house, and spitting directly in the face of those fans.

Oh is he threatening to break up with them?   When did he say that?  In fact, when did he say /anything at all/?  For all anyone knows he also deleted a bunch of pictures that have nothing to do with football as well but nobody is paying any attention to that.

But sure, using the technology that connects you one in one with your fans to voice your displeasure is juvenile.  He needs to find a local beat writer and voice his displeasure to them, because that's how my daddy and his daddy before him did it.

Deebo is great, but durability has not been his friend. 49ers may want to think twice about paying big bucks to a guy who has missed over 20% of possible games in the nfl so far.

Is Deebo your boyfriend or something? Settle down, Francis.

It’s OK that we have different opinions and disagree. No reason to get all emotional and act like a weirdo.

HYPERBOLE!!!!!!!!

Gotta ask. Will you chase his 2021 #'s this year? I know some things have to settle but if all stays the same ...would you? It seems every year we get a performance like this and next year *poof*.

Depends what you mean by "chase".  King of the jungle (sorry can't get my phone to link you) got Najee Harris straight up for him, and even with my mancrush that's too high a price for me to pay.  But in redraft if I'm at the end of the first round I would start thinking about drafting him there.

Generally I've seen him valued around the Adams/Hill/Diggs tier, while I have him just at the end of Jefferson/Chase/Kupp.

or maybe they should just stop running the ball with him so he doesn’t get into 10 car crashes a game. There’s an idea too.

Because they run him, I don’t expect his numbers to tank entirely. But I also expect Lance to be inconsistent, leading to more 3 & outs, which might limit Deebo’s opportunities.

I would not be inclined to roster Deebo in redraft next year at what I’m sure will be a high ADP. If “buying or drafting at market rate” = chasing 2021 #s, my answer is no.

Dynasty I’d still be a buyer, hopeful for future seasons.

In redraft I can’t quite imagine pulling the trigger on him until like the 2/3 turn or later. I don’t trust the role or Lance’s ability to keep all of the pass catchers and runners fed. At least for this year.

I know the idea is to avoid "paying retail" for anyone but redraft wise, he's someone this year I would avoid doing that with. I think the range of outcomes is too wide. Great player but I suspect he will be on someone else's team this year.

When we try to get more money using leverage (i.e. interviewing elsewhere) we’re doing what men (and women) are supposed to do to advance our careers. If a football player does it he’s immature and not a team player. It’s an odd phenomenon for sure.
