WR Deebo Samuel, WAS (3 Viewers)

I'll always love Deebo. The guy is ferocious when healthy, but his play style was unlikely to lead to a long, productive career. I'm happy I hopped off the train last year. He's not someone I'd buy low on unless you're paying a late 2nd (superflex).
Love him in redraft though, as a WR4 in an ascendent offense.
IDK..seems like a fools errand. We will soon see. he's always hurt or limited.
When I owned Deebo I would always assume that he would be out a few games with a soft tissue injury. Idk about last year. He's got too much explosive upside to ignore him, and it's possible he'll be better served by being the wr2 than the main focus.

Buy in redraft and hold in dynasty until he blows up and you can sell before his three week hamstring.
Buy in redraft @ the right price. Those owners in dynasty may have to wait the whole year to know wth he's worth. That vid did owners no favors for sure. Kittle mitigated some of that loss but not all.
I was teasing when I commented on it, I forgot what a sensitive group us FFers can be. I do question his value in FF however. He needs to be used a particular way to produce, I am sure the staff knows that. I do not personally think he has the same juice he had in 21’ (that thought not stemming from the practice jog). For a guy who is not a technician I simply think that limits him. He is useful for an NFL team at this time, but I would not be counting on too much from an FF standpoint. I hope he proves me wrong as in his peak he was freaking incredible to watch.

Yes. And that way is “get him the ball and let YAC do the rest”.

Or “throw him the ball and let YAC do the rest”.

He’s not a lot different from a lot of players in that regard. If he is healthy & if he gets touches, he should produce.

I just do not see him as anything more than a WR3 at this point. Again, hope I am wrong as during his peak he was one of the more exciting players in the league.

I have him as a WR2, so we’re not that far apart. That said, on the roster I have a share. he’s my WR4, so WR3 results would be fine by me. I’m just rooting for a healthy season with some timely spike games.

I think he’s a great best ball target depending on ADP.

George Kittles response to the people piling on Deebo in the video:

"It’s called group install when players jog thru plays. Knock it off"

Kittle is cute defending his fat friend
we don't fat shame around here!
I’d be ecstatic to have Deebo’s physique
Me too. Buncha keyboard warrior fatties body shaming Deebo from their Meemaw's basement.

I'm not expecting 2021 but I like his price, and not trying for a hot take but I think in games played he's 50/50 to outscore Terry and his price is not even close to Terry's. Of course he'll carry a little more injury risk for missed games.

If he costs what he did since 2021 I'd never draft him and would be trying to cash out in the two dynasty teams I have him(where I have him as my WR4 and WR5). But I love his redraft cost and overall value right now, feel like I'm getting a guy with rock solid WR2 potenial who I'm drafting as a WR4.
To the bolded yeah it has been near impossible for me to pull the trigger on Terry where he is going, even though I can see it returning value, I feel like it would be basically returning even value at best. Deebo is definitely the screaming deal and I agree about 50/50 production.

That said, I still think Terry is one of the very best most talented WRs in the league and my comp would be G Wilson, but Terry's QBs have just been awful until last year. His production has been eerily consistent, almost Mike Evans like. Only thing that's changed production wise is ok wow he got a QB and gets 13 TDs!! Yes we know TDs are fluky but there has really got to be considered a bump because Daniels is back there. McLaurin is a contested ball specialist but the ball needs to at least be close, and the team at least needs to be in position to call fades and such.

2024 82 - 1096 - 13
2023 79 - 1002 - 2
2022 77 - 1191 - 5
2021 77 - 1053 - 5
2020 87 - 1118 - 4
2019 58 - 919 - 7

Only reason I bring all this up is right now Terry is going around WR15-17 in the redrafts and best balls I've been in, but finished WR7 last year and obviously it was because of the TDs. But it's pretty tough to pull the trigger there like I said. Maybe I should open up to it more! But TLDR I think both receivers can eat, I think Deebo only makes the offense better and he is the obvious arbitrage play between the two.

Good post and my comp for Terry, which I've said around here, was actually another Ohio St WR, Olave.

You've pretty much summed up why I have not drafted or really even considered drafting Terry because he goes so high based on his TD production last year and that's hard for me to see him getting close.

The two best red zone players in the NFL last year? Terry and Mark Andrews and it was not really close. Both had 15 red zone targets, 13 catches and 11(Andrews) and 10 TD's. They are the only two players in the league who had double digit TD's on passes in the red zone. To put that in some context Jamaar Chase had 36 red zone targets and 8 TD's and he's incredible with probably the most accurate QB in the league.

I know Daniels is great but previous to last year Terry had almost the same TD's on red zone catches on 58 targets as he had on 15 last year, one less. Not interested in chasing that at his cost.

I, too, suffer PTSD from that one
Like all the buyers back in '22, when they thought they were getting a WR who ran in 6 TDs a year.

They still haven't recovered, like that time they went to Thailand, and found out the hard way what a ladyboy is.
Let's get weird.

I once had a convo with a guy I knew who was bragging to me about recently taking a "sex vacation" to Thailand and how affordable it was to have ton of sex with some of the most beautiful women he'd ever seen. I was like" dude, I don't think those were women" and he just shrugged and told me "you know, it's not about what you've been, it's about what you are".

To tie that back to Deebo he's affordable in a way he's not been since before he broke out in 2021. He's discounted like a Thailand sex worker where to quote White Lotus, "sex is like a box of chocolates, never know when you are going to get nuts". There is some risk here, also maybe a great deal if everything checks out under the hood. YMMV but between these extremes Deebo's the gamble I'm willing to take.

Nominated: best analogy ever posted to FBG. 🏆

He for sure might be cooked. But he was 18.7, 18, out with calf injury, 10.2, 3, 20.7 before he suffered a lung injury and came back after only missing the KC game. If I can get a guy for as cheap as you can get Deebo in dynasty who is going to mix in some clunkers with his 18+ point games, I think it's worth the risk. If it's over and his value drops, I haven't really given much up.

Been getting him as a WR4 a lot in best balls. Him, Hunter, and Meyers seem to end up on my teams a lot.
I know it's the Deebo thread, but man I love me some Jakobi Meyers. I'm just getting going on best ball but expect to have a ton of him.

Not for nothing, this is what I predicted as his fit in that offense as soon as he signed. He’s going to be a menace on underneath dump-offs & screens.

Unfortunately it might come at the expense of the WAS backfield losing some touches.
My thinking is, due to the extreme need to put a spy on JD5, Deebo is going to be extra open on some of these.

B-b-b-bingo.

When I was young and in peak Army-fighting shape, I wasn't that fast IMO
Dude has always been thick. I been sayin it.

They took a clip of Deebo running ~half speed exercises and tried to make a claim he’s a fatty fat boy.

He’s gonna be a bargain in a lot of redraft leagues this year.
He looks even bigger to me lol. Perhaps he's just big boned, or the camera is putting on ten er twenty. But not worth it to me...

"They say the camera adds 10 pounds"

"Then stop eating cameras"

"You shouldn't say that, it's off putting..."

"Maybe you should be off pudding"

That may be the best we've ever gotten from Jennifer Lawrence

This guy is being WAY undervalued. I'd urge everyone here to pay attention to Commander's camp. With Terry sitting out waiting on a contract, Deebo is being integrated. Honestly, he'll do best with Terry there, but they're gonna have set plays for this guy and he's gonna be on the field as the #2 option all the time and he's gonna get set runs too I'd wager.

I think he has a WR2 (13-24 rank) this season easily. Can be drafted very very very late right now.

2025 Washington Commanders training camp: Latest intel, updates

Excerpt:

Sunday, Aug. 10

Terry McLaurin's hold-in -- as well as Noah Brown sidelined while recovering from a knee injury in the spring -- has helped allow quarterback Jayden Daniels to develop a growing rapport with new receiver Deebo Samuel. That has been on display since camp started when the two connected on a deep ball. It was evident in the joint session against New England and again on Sunday in a non-padded practice.

Daniels loves throwing the slot fade to Samuel and that's what they connected on during a seven-on-seven drill in which he beat corner Mike Sainristil for a touchdown. Daniels said the connection can get even better.

"Deebo is starting to understand how I see things," Daniels said. "I love hearing his feedback as to what he sees.

"He looks good. He makes plays, contested catches. As we grow this thing I'm excited to see what we do in a game setting."

I read Matt Harmon's 2024 profile on Deebo today. It is quite negative, and some of the metrics he charted were outright terrible. I think I will limit my shares to the one dynasty league I already have him.

2024 Deebo was pretty much hurt and/or sick every game. Is this Harmon grade on 2024 only, or where Deebo stands in general and going fwd after 2024? If the former, I think we need to consider the possibility last year may have been an off year, rather than a defining trend. New year. New team. Stay healthy.

Agreed. It is not normal for an elite athlete to need to be hospitalized when they get pneumonia. I think the pneumonia affected him a lot more than people realized . . .

It was just 2024. But when I say terrible, I'm probably understating it. Harmon charted his success rates:
  • Against man coverage (31.6% of routes) as being in the 1st percentile (i.e., the lowest and worst percentile)
  • Against zone coverage (68.4%) in the 30th percentile
  • Against press coverage (9.3%) in the 2nd percentile
I don't recall ever seeing Harmon chart a player against any type of coverage as low as 1st/2nd percentile. That is horrific.

From Harmon:

Samuel really only got open on three routes in 2024: The slant, dig and flat, while everything else was a bit of mess. In-breakers have always been the strength of his game but his success rates on slants and digs were diminished from his best years and hovered around the league average.

...When you can get him into the open field, Deebo is still a threat to make a big play. You just have to do more catering than ever to get him into that space.
