WR Diontae Johnson, CLE (1 Viewer)

Wake me up when any WR has the kind of game Claypool had last week...

Yea, no way he replicates that......teams will be keying on him from here on out.  If anything, it helps his teammates get open looks.

He still leads the team in targets despite basically missing 2 games, he's their best route runner, and best RAC WR.

If I were ranking it as everyone is healthy, its Johnson>JuJu>Claypool, and if Claypool stays hot, I think its at JuJu's expense, not Johnson's.

I feel like we've been through this already with the Steelers with Conner, when people were ready to write him off after week 1, when he underachieved and got hurt, and Snell looked good in his absence. Johnson feels like a potential stud WR(especially in PPR) in the 2nd half of the season.

I'm not saying Johnson will 100% be the #1, but there is no reason to think he won't be, and he clearly was when healthy so far. Considering what else has been said in this thread, and in Claypool's, Johnson feels like an obvious buy-low for pennies on the dollar.
The healthy part is pretty important,  though.  Johnson seems to have a hard time with that part.  And I am not saying it's not possible.  It certainly is. It's definitely possible he could be the #1.  I was commenting on the fact that you said there is a lot of reason to think it.

To be honest I don't think that they will really have a true #1 this year. I think it's more likely that they could have a different #1 week to week based on how the defense plays them.

No reason? Injury history down? 4 TD breakout by beastly rookie teammate down?

DJ may bounce back and take over the Pitt WR1 once and for all... But there are several very legit reasons to think he won't.

I’m just hoping Johnson can get back on the field long enough to be useful as a WR3.   There is little chance he is the WR1 for the Steelers.  Ever.

It is not even within the realm of possibilities that Johnson ever does that. It is that Claypool does and that’s the point. You get the commentary that you deserve when you spend two off-seasons calling a guy a clear WR1. Still the worst thread in the SP.

You can let go of an opinion you were wrong about. It’s ok. You don’t have to triple down because you were wrong. I was wrong about JuJu. Claypool is the intended alpha for this offense. Just the way it is. JuJu is not the guy I thought he was and Johnson is certainly not the guy you think he is if you think they desire him to be the WR1 of this offense.

Garbage can Jarvis Landry. Maybe when he lands under Adam Gase you guys will get what you want. Ben loves to throw it downfield. He’s not opposed to LOS throws but it’s not where he wants to live.

Agree - this week should favor the slot defensively, and reportedly Big Ben was impressed with how JuJu was cheering on Claypool. Seems like a squeaky wheel game for JJSS, but week to week this is going to be a fluid situation,(so long as all are healthy)

Diontae Johnson absolutely can be the teams #1 WR. He has to stay healthy and at this point that seems like an issue. I can give you that. Also Claypool is a stud. This thread predicted the JuJu hoax a year early. Everybody has realized he's a fraud now but if you were in here last year you could have sold JuJu for a mint before the bottom fell out. Hardly a terrible thread.

is there a time limit on that assessment? bc I'm pretty sure the Christine Michael and Royce Freeman truthers are going to be hard to beat out
Was just about to post this.  👏

The C-Mike thread is the best ever.  I can’t hear the phrase “shot out of a cannon” without thinking of that thread.

Which thread?

There were at least 3 CMike threads that got shut down.

This is why we watch the players so we know how great Christine Michael was. =D
The original. I remember because I stopped interacting about him after that... while people were turning down two 1st round picks for him. 🙄

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Diontae Johnson (back) will be on the field when the team returns to practice Wednesday.

It's a significant development since Johnson had previously taken Wednesdays off to recover from past injuries. He's clearly trending in the right direction to return to the field against the Titans. Johnson has yet to play a full game since Chase Claypool was thrust into the lineup, but the two are expected to remain afloat ahead of JuJu Smith-Schuster even when all three are (finally) on the field together. This situation could become a mess for fantasy if James Washington also keeps involved.

1a and 1b when healthy.
Yeah, besides the health I'm not worried at all about Dionte's place in the pecking order. I think their skill sets compliment each other perfectly. Claypool will have the higher TD floor but DJ should be peppered with plenty of targets.

Why is there so much bitterness about the injuries for DJ? We all know this is a brutal game and there are many other players injured this year and for some reason this is the only guy made of glass, ridiculous. Claypool is here to stay but I still think DJ is the #1 and will basically take over the AB role moving forward. He is a strong buy, especially in dynasty.

Although there's team precedent - AB had 20-30 punt returns a year for most of his Steeler years.
Yeah they've done this often where they switch up the punt returner throughout the game. Have a primary guy who's decent at it but then they seem to get sick of him waiting to break one so they throw their big gun in there who happens to be a starter. I think partly because, aside from Antwaan Randle El, I can't think of one they've had lately that was very good at returning punts and also was not their number one or number two receiver. Randle El was their number two for a year but typically was their number three receiver.

I'm guessing that fair catches aren't counted in these stats, so 20-30/year is probably MOST of the actual returned kicks in those years.  For comparison, only 4 players in the NFL had more than 30 punt returns in 2019.  (I checked PFR for 2015 and no other Steeler is listed with a punt return that year).

My point being, Pittsburgh had their #1 WR (AB) as their #1 punt returner for several years

ETA - don't take this to mean I like seeing Diontae back there fielding punts.  Just that it shouldn't be a huge surprise that the Steelers are doing it.

I agree. That's why I said what I said. It shouldn't be surprising. Most teams don't do it but being a Steelers fan, I see it far too often.

Diontae Johnson (back) is practicing in full for Week 7 against the Titans.

With Johnson now healthy, it will be very interesting to see how the Steelers divvy up the receiver snaps between he, JuJu Smith-Schuster, stud rookie Chase Claypoool, and James Washington. It was Washington who led the team in targets last week with Johnson sidelined. JuJu has easily been the least explosive of the group through six weeks, but Johnson also hasn't been able to stay healthy.

Diontae Johnson was removed from Pittsburgh's Week 7 injury report.

Steelers are hoping to have Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster available for a full game for the first time since Chase Claypool's emergence. With James Washington still active as the team's go-to deep threat, the fallout of Pittsburgh's expanded target tree is something worth monitoring on Sunday. Both Claypool and Johnson remain fantasy players' safest options with Smith-Schuster falling in line as a FLEX play.

Best wideout group in the league. And DJ will be the leader when it settles down.
If not the best the deepest.

And I know debating who is the #1WR on the team is a popular topic. I kind of chose to look at that a little bit differently. If not this year then by next season Claypool is the guy opposing defenses will be game planning to stop, more of the classic #1WR people think of outside of fantasy football and I think a good bet to lead the team in receiving yardage and TD's. But I believe Diontae will lead the team in targets, for me that's typically what I view as the #1 for fantasy.

I think Johnson will be fine if he can stay on the field.  For as great as Claypool has been, he still only had 4 targets last week (had 11 against Philly, hasn't had more than 4 any other week).  Johnson had double digit targets in both games he played all four quarters.

As far as the long-term outlook, it's simple.

Claypool is going to be the guy. His ceiling is so high you can't see it yet.

It's almost a given JuJu will be gone.

Anyone know if DJ is back to #2 on the depth chart this week? Is he being worked back into the offense?  His target share was off the charts for the two weeks he fully played.
