WR John Metchie III, HOU (1 Viewer)

I am here because of Anthony Richardson...rendering Josh Downs useless so I am looking for WR depth. I also had Diggs.

After reading this thread, looking at recent highlights, Metchie sure reminds me of Diggs. Both are 6ft 195 lbs (Diggs is 194 lbs). And if Metchie can take the slot position I can see him usable down the stretch. Houston will not change their playbook. It's set for this year.

Curious if he may have staying power even with Nico back.

T. Dell just doesn't seem to be taking advantage of Nico's absence.
If he can slide into the slot role Diggs was occupying, then the answer is a resounding yes. Playing the slot in this offense with Nico and Dell taking so much coverage on the outside, his production might even improve. Houston still seems to love Hutchinson's blocking and Woods' experience, but Metchie showed out last night when given the opportunity. I tried to tell everyone he looked great the week prior as well, even with zero catches. Production or lack thereof doesn't always tell the whole story. He was running crisp routes and getting open. Did the same last night. It was a short week last TNF though, and he's been 5th or 6th on the depth chart so expecting him and Stroud to be on the same page that week was probably asking too much. Still, a lot needs to happen for him to be a viable NFL/fantasy starter, but yesterday was a huge step forward for this guy.
Thanks for this great analysis. Do you see him having any FF value this season, or is he a longer term project?
I look at it this way, if he can take over the slot and keep Hutchinson/Woods off the field, he will be essentially taking over the Diggs role in this offense. There was a big hole left in this offense with Diggs and Nico going down, and Hutchinson and Woods did not take advantage. Now, Metchie's nowhere near the player Diggs was when he got hurt, not yet anyway, but he's got the route running skills to be a productive WR in this league. Ryans was quick to praise his ability to beat man to man coverage, which is important, but still, he won't get the quantity of plays designed for him that Diggs did once Nico and Tank are both back on the field. IMO, Nico is the alpha, Tank is a deep threat, but Metchie is better suited for the slot and is a better route runner compared to Tank. Right now, I view him as a WR 4/5 with WR 2/3 upside in redraft if everything were to happen perfectly. He's a hold depending on league size, but I wouldn't be starting him until you see how the snaps/routes play out with Nico back.

I'm happy for Metchie but afraid this is just a one off event. He's had two seasons to produce and pretty pathetic this is his first time sniffing the end zone. I'm really going to need some consistency before I crown him as a WR3.
Maybe you are unfamiliar with this kids history (these past 2 season specifically - ACL & Leukemia) ... But this is a strong start for him to return to his potential, granted in a supplemental role.

I'm well aware. Tore ACL in 2021 @ Alabama and sat out 2022 NFL season due to leukemia. He been playing the past two seasons my guy.

Metchie plays and looks bigger than he's listed. Diggs is faster. Diggs can play all three positions, where Metchie's game is much more suited to the slot. I think of prime Austin Collie when I watch him play.

A+ analysis my guy.

2023 was his first year real playing in the NFL all after trying to build back his strength and athleticism, and it was with a rookie QB and terrible offensive line. He wasn't at 100% and was stuck behind Nico, Tank, Noah Brown and Robert Woods for most of the season. If I remember correctly, many thought Woods could be the #1 last season if that tells you where Metchie was in the pecking order after everything played out.

Let's call last year a wash, and do you really think he was going to usurp the big 3 in this offense to start the year? Did you even watch the last two games? Metchie can play. Hutchinson has been given every opportunity to succeed here. He got a ton of snaps and routes during Diggs'/Nico's absences. He failed. Woods looks like he's past his prime.

Metchie will be given a chance at the starting slot role in this offense. That's meaningful. If he can keep it up, his opportunities and production will increase, he will be making it an easy decision what to do with Diggs next season.

Last week Metchie shared reps with Woods, with Metchie getting the majority. Metchie played in 11 personnel and Woods in 12 personnel. How do you see this playing out when Nico Collins returns?

The short answer is I don't know. I wish I could do better. Ryans liked what he saw. Hutchinson kind of flopped with with the balls thrown his way. Woods is who he is, he's 32 and will be an UFA next season. He won't be a Texan. I believe Metchie is the perfect fit for what they need in 11. I don't see him on the field much in 12 to start, but who knows in the future. I tried to pay attention to his blocking. He looked to have good effort, and made a few good blocks but completely whiffed on one I saw. That's a part of his game I'm sure he needs to work on, and part of the reason why Hutchinson was getting so many reps. It will be interesting how it all plays out but I liked what I saw, and it seems Ryans did too.

Thanks again much appreciated. I'm trying to decide between him, Juju or Alec Pierce for this season...

I'm a big fan of Pierce. His situation isn't the best, but he's proven he can have success with Richardson and remains a low floor high ceiling WR. He's a known commodity with upside at this point while Metchie's usage moving forward with Nico and Tank healthy remains an complete unknown moving forward.

If I had to choose based on what I know right now, I like Pierce > Metchie > JJSS.

Metchie looks the part as a pass catcher. He's a great route runner and he's gaining confidence with each game, it's fun to watch him progress. He's showing some fire tonight talking to the DBs.

He earned some serious brownie points with that play on the fake punt, but then put another awful block on tape that Aikman called out for all to see (not that the coaches didn't already take notice). He has some work to put in to become a complete WR that the Texans and fantasy world can trust, but he's on this way to something special.

Not his year. Texans and Stroud seem to have taken a step back even with a renewed Mixon helping open things up. Receivers not named Nico are unusable this season. Still like Metchie, but I no longer have hope this is his year.
