WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (3 Viewers)

You missed his fight with the net apparently, and he seemed to shut down last year when it was clear the Giants were going nowhere. Maybe I'm wrong but the general consensus is that hes a nutcase
The net thing was 2 years ago and the bolded is pure speculation.  He seems less crazy to me last year (admittedly that bar was pretty low).  He averages over 16 PPG in 1/2 PPR and is only 26 years old - I'm glad I have him in a keeper league.

Dan, I enjoy reading your posts, and I respect your opinion, but this is just a load of crap. How about for once, someone talk about all the community work he does? https://nypost.com/2017/06/17/my-responsibility-to-be-a-good-role-model-odell-beckham-jr/   https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2017/07/23/odell-beckham-jr-uses-social-media-for-good-visits-9-year-old-cancer-patient-in-texas/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.cc8c9eefe959

It seems like those not from NY think for some reason, that OBJ is crazy and probably worse. The net? Whatever happened to showmanship? As for the bolded, where did you see this, or is this just more speculation? Antonio Brown has shown us what a nut he is, but Beckham? When he wanted to get paid he shut up and got paid. If he played anywhere but NY, he'd be a hero. Playing for the Giants he's under a microscope, and everyone wants to find something bad about him because the media loves a good nutjob sports star story. And so do the fans.

I'm not saying hes a bad person, but he has shown a history of letting his emotions get the best of him during games. that has been shown to self destruct athletes in the past

ETA: I'm not the only one to comment on his poor mental abilities. Just go back to page 91 and earlier. This isnt a new discussion...

NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala reports the Browns offered RG Kevin Zeitler, DE Emmanuel Ogbah, and one other player to the Giants for Odell Beckham.

The Giants obviously didn't accept the offer and allegedly "laughed at" it. It's going to take a whole heck of a lot more than that to acquire one of the three best receivers in the sport who is firmly in his prime. The Giants have reportedly not completely ignored phone calls for OBJ and would be willing to move him for the right price. Odds are a package would have to include multiple high picks, possibly a pair of first-rounders. Zeitler is an elite guard but is rumored to be on the trade block in Cleveland. Ogbah is a good-not-great edge presence. This offer really isn't even close, but it at least points to the Browns being interested in acquiring Beckham.

ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports the Giants are not going to put Odell Beckham on the trade market this offseason.

"[Giants] are not actively going to go out and trade Odell Beckham Jr.," Raanan said. "But if somebody's going to talk to them about Odell and put in an offer, they're going to listen." Raanan continued that multiple sources have told him the Niners are interested and the No. 2 overall pick they possess could at least "get the Giants to think about it." New York would take on $16 million in dead money if it trades Beckham, so an offer would undoubtedly have to blow GM Dave Gettleman away if he decidedly sent his All-Pro wideout packing just one year into his recent five-year extension.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Giants are "listening to offers" for Odell Beckham.

Per Schefter, the G-Men are not "looking to deal" their superstar but are answering the phone when other teams call. Schefter believes things could get more serious as the draft approaches. When there is this much smoke billowing from the brush, there are typically flames somewhere underneath.

Rotoworld take:

Browns acquired WR Odell Beckham from the Giants in exchange for 2019 first- and third-round picks and S Jabrill Peppers.

When talking about a top-three receiver in the sport who is just 26 years old and in the prime of his career, this is chump change the Giants are getting in return. The Giants will get the 17th overall pick in the draft and the second of the Browns' third-rounders, No. 95 overall. Peppers isn't a bad player, but he doesn't move the needle. Giants GM Dave Gettleman just signed OBJ to a record contract less than seven months ago and is now flipping him after saying he "didn't sign him to trade him" all offseason. The Browns were determined in their effort and had their sights set on Beckham all along. Joining Baker Mayfield, the two will grow together for years to come. Add in Jarvis Landry, David Njoku, Nick Chubb, and Kareem Hunt, this looks like a playoff team in Cleveland.

If he stays healthy he's gonna have one of the best fantasy seasons for a WR.   Odell Beckham Jr. Steps into an Ideal Situation With Cleveland’s Offense

...Like many superstar receivers, Beckham is most dangerous on slant patterns and downfield routes, which require a quarterback who will pull the trigger on schedule into tight windows.

...Manning was not always comfortable targeting the vertical routes—and that’s where Beckham’s life is about to brighten. Mayfield has a true gunslinger’s mentality, and he’ll target the deep outer hole against Cover 2. He’ll zip the ball past the earhole of a man-to-man defender who is trailing Beckham with safety help over the top. He’ll keep his eyes downfield in scramble drills when he’s outside the pocket.

With Mayfield, Beckham now becomes the rare receiver who can still be counted on for 80-plus yards when he’s facing a barrage of dedicated double-teams.
Mayfield and ODB become double team bunker busters.

My list is actually quite longer. I think it's a waving, on fire red flag that he has shut down and lost it mentally the last 2 years. the injury history doesnt help.

I sold last year. dont think I'd want to buy again
I'm with you on this one.  OBJ is in my 3rd tier of WRs, no higher than WR6.  I don't see him putting up better numbers than he did in NY, and he needs to prove that he can both stay on the field and stay motivated.

Anything is better than Eli at this point.  Though I'm having trouble swallowing the Browns as offensive juggernaut narrative at the moment.

Early 2019 Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. projection: 152 targets, 95 receptions, 1238 yards, 10 TD

9:44 PM - 12 Mar 2019

That puts him about WR9/10 based on 2018's scoring.  Sounds about right to me.
If you look at his stats, it is a conservative projection.

I knew he was good but I had no clue he was this good.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since his rookie season of 2014

  • 92.8 yards per game  - Places him 3rd in the NFL over that time span
  • 10.5 targets per game - NFL rank 3rd
  • 6.6 receptions per game - NFL rank 4th
  • 44 receiving TDs - NFL rank 3rd
Only player in modern SB era who has had two 1,000 yard receiving seasons in 12 games or fewer.

He is 100 receiving yards from passing Julio Jones for most receiving yards in first 60 NFL games, Beckum has played 59 games so it is possible he sets that record.

He has three seasons with over 1,000 yards receiving and over 10 receiving TDs, no Cleveland Brown has ever had more than one season let alone strung together three consecutive with those numbers.

And he has had more receiving yards per game 128.8 against the AFCN than any WR during his career.

Even if he doesn't play a full season he has averaged top-three numbers over his career.  Seems like Baker could boost his numbers to reach his career average and that puts him top-three.

If he plays 16 games 95/1238/10 seems like his absolute floor.  That would be his worst per game numbers of his career by a pretty healthy amount.

Might be dead wrong here, but CLE seems like they're planning on going full-on New Orleans, never take your foot off the gas, run the score up if you can mode.

Winning might be their top  priority. Running up the score is a pipedream.
you look at that offense on paper and call running up the score a "pipedream"?

Im not saying they're objective is 60pts a game, but that offense is being built for Baker to go wild with.

The defense is solid, getting more solid, and likely the focus of the draft as well.

Because you're getting ahead of yourself. You're looking for them to run up scores when they haven't proven anything yet. They have the arsenal, but if I'm the Browns I just want to make the playoffs.

According ESPN's Tony Grossi, Odell Beckham is expected to report for the start of the Browns' offseason program on Monday.

Beckham was reportedly taken aback by his trade to Cleveland, particularly after inking a five-year extension with the Giants last summer. Despite his initial disappointment, the star receiver is expected to report on time for OTAs. Most teams don't begin their offseason workouts until mid-April but the Browns are allowed to get an early start after hiring a new coach, Freddie Kitchen. Reunited with college teammate Jarvis Landry and playing with one of the league's top young quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield, it shouldn't take long for Beckham to warm up to Cleveland.

does this kind of a story impact your dynasty value for him?

I had offered a heck of a trade for him, saw this article, and scrambled to revoke it so I could think it over. luckily it was oddly rejected

Is this an over blown story, or just another sign of a headcase diva?

Just seems to be par for the course in general. OBJ will show up and probably be really good and still a headcase. I just dont see this ending well at all; hes a ticking time bomb IMO

It's only a story if you make it a story for the hundreds of other guys not at voluntary practice

Yes, I agree that the media makes too much of guys not at a voluntary practice in May. It's just when you think of a guy on a new team, he wants to win, he is unhappy to be there... at least at first, he shows up to day 1 then is a no show... That's a bit of smoke for a guy who is known to be an emotional guy.

Smoke?

Yeesh.  I see no smoke

You can see smoke or you can see an opportunity to buy when others see smoke.  I don't play dynasty but I'm in a 4 player keeper league with no restrictions on how long the players can be kept, so similar but obviously  different.  Anyway, over the last two year I traded for  OBJ and AB when others were wary of the "smoke".  One of my other keepers is Zeke and I'm not too concerned about the potential off field issues because these guys are so productive when they play.

Back to OBJ, I thought he showed growth/maturity last year off the field, hes only 25, and he averages over 16 PPG in 1/2 PPR for his career so I'll take that all day, off field "issues" be damned.

You are overblowing this. The media stirs this #### up, in the hopes that people actually believe it's a story. If it was Julio Jones we wouldn't hear a word. Beckham draws the media like flies. Hope he blows up this year and shuts everyone up.

Fair enough, but if Julio was traded to a new team, was disappointed in being traded, and then skipped OTAs after going to the first one, I'd hope the media would cover it. If not then I'd completely agree with you.

I feel like this is the fall back all of the OBJ owners use to justify his behavior, "if anyone else did it, it wouldnt be news." Except I have never seen a single example where someone did something identical to OBJ, and in the same context, and it wasnt a big deal in the media.

that's a poor argument. I'm not the one saying "the media makes this a big deal. they wouldnt for Julio." Julios not a headcase who makes you scratch your head. However, to answer your question- yes, leveon bell is on a new team, skipping otas, and there are plenty of articles on it. the only difference is the coach isn't calling him out publicly

I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm surprised by the lack of concern, but that's fine. DLF people seem to be looking at this from a different angle than SP posters, which is why I asked. it's interesting

I think you're going to see a trend of top paid veteran players sitting out OTAs. As they should. It's a terrible risk/reward scenario for them.

Is it? They've already signed their big deals, gotten their guaranteed money. I understand a highly paid vet not wanting to go, but at the same time I dont see how it would impact them financially if they got hurt- unless their contract has some injury clause.

I'm a little confused why a skill position player would not show up to OTAs on a new team, especially when they want to win.

Yes, OTAs are stupid, make them mandatory or dont do them at all. Every year we see these stories. I can see vets missing these, especially highly paid ones, but new players I'd want to show more desire to learn the offense and form a rhythm with their new qb.

I don't see this being discussed on DLF. Link? Curious to see what they're saying.

Odell Beckham confirmed his participation in this week's minicamp.

OBJ has largely been a no-show this offseason, drawing the ire of head coach Freddie Kitchens. Luckily that will change Tuesday when he arrives for mandatory minicamp, where Beckham will look to build a rapport with Baker Mayfield. Drama comes with the territory with Beckham, but obviously the 25-year-old has the potential to be a huge fantasy asset when healthy and motivated.

Desire and form a rhythm with the QB?  In hopes of attaining what exactly?

Maybe you are focusing on the wrong thing.

OBJ brings this skill.

That is a small taste of what OBJ brings to an NFL and fantasy team along with 'Kardashian-eske' drama.

If you focus in on and build up the drama making it more important than his rare football skills then you are missing the point.
