WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (1 Viewer)

Wouldn't a team have to offer him more than $7 million for him to get more money this year (I didn't read up on how his contract was restructured so I don't know the exact number)?

Anything offered is just deducted out of what Cleveland is on the hook for paying him, so I wouldn't expect him to get offered more than the league minimum from any team.
no.  he is a free agent.

Was hopeful but not surprised at Green Bay’s non competitive offer.
im with the rest above your post that agree with their offer.  There is not a need to offer him much more than that.  Either he wants a shot at a ring with a great QB...or he wants to go somewhere for the money.

Its up to him.  If they got him...they know he is there because he wants to play a role and win.

He is a free agent, but a team would have to pay him more than what he is still owed by Cleveland for him to get any additional money.  I'm having trouble finding what that number is.

Based on this article, it looks like he is still owed around $4 million from the Browns:  https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2021/11/browns-and-odell-beckham-jr-signed-their-financial-agreement-which-will-save-them-3-million-if-he-doesnt-get-claimed-hell-be-waived-monday.html

ok I’m not the only one confused by this.

I found this article which states OBJ will be paid 4.25 Million termination pay by the Browns.

he also free to sign with any team for whatever amount they agree to and he keeps both amounts.

this contradicts what I was reading before he was released, but I would have to assume this is correct since it was written once they knew the exact terms of his release.

Thanks, that would certainly change things from his perspective assuming that is accurate.

I still don't think any team will offer him much more than the league minimum, he is basically a lottery ticket trying to play for a bigger contract next year, and a new team bringing him in this late in the season cannot really expect that much from him either.

I read they renegotiated a settlement. Essentially OBJ took 3 million less of his guarantee in order to be released. Since nobody claimed him, nobody assumed his contract. He is now deemed a free agent and can negotiate a contract with any team. The key is that the two sides gave in a bit in order for him to find a new home. Cleveland saved a few million and OBJ gets to move on to a better spot(in his view). This is how I understand it anyways.

OBJ is a free agent now. He doesn’t have to be playing for a contract for next year. He could sign a multi-year deal with a signing bonus and new guaranteed money right now and not wait til next year. Even teams with limited cap room could structure a deal with very little cap hit for this year. Whether anyone is brave enough to do that, who knows?

I think this is usually due to offsetting language where what he gets from his new team is subtracted from what his former team owes him.  This is often one of the main points of friction when teams negotiate with rookies.  It sounds like he didn't have offsetting language in his contract so he gets to double dip.  I've never worked for the NFL and didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so that's my layman's understanding of it, at least.

That is my understanding as well.  His goal should be, and probably is, to go to the best situation this season to set up for a long term contract as a FA this offseason.

Don't see why he would go to a worse situation for a couple extra million this season.

Going to NO would be suicide with their mess at QB.  SEA he'd be the #3 WR and they will struggle to make the playoffs.  KC would probably be solid for his stats but that team has been a mess.  GB seems like the best fit by far for chance at SB and target opportunity playing with a HOF QB.

Sign vet minimum with GB and give yourself the best chance at a nice contract somewhere this offseason.  Almost a no-brainer.
going to NO and bombing would be much better for him than going to GB and bombing ….and going to NO and flashing will be better for him than going to GB and flashing….

Going anywhere and bombing does him no good. Going anywhere and thriving does him wonders. If he is on a one year prove it deal he needs to prove it. He needs someone that can put the ball in his catch radius. Then, when everyone can see he can still be productive then he can land that big final deal. Likely nobody is willing to give him a big multi year contract right now. But if he’s productive someone will in the off season.

On the surface, Pats wouldn't be a bad fit. No WR1 there, a young QB that shows promise and they are still in the mix for their division or at least a wild card spot as the Bills suddenly look beatable. They also have a decent chunk of cap space next year if he's interested in a multi-year deal or possible extension whereas the Saints and Packers are going to have to make some moves to cut salary.

Boston Globe tweeted OBJ to NE. One year, $2.9 million. Not sure if that is for the rest of the year or if he would get prorated amount for remaining weeks.

🤷‍♂️

Maybe it’s a fake account. Haven’t seen it reported elsewhere yet. Would consider it unofficial for now.
😆

Might end up being true but it's obviously a fake account.  118 followers and he says, "Esteemed sports journalist & Patriots Beat Writer Double PHD in Journalism & Female Anatomy"

Yeah, my bad. Saw that retweeted by several other people. So hasn’t signed with the Pats. However, BB said to be trying hard to bring him in.

This guy claiming the OBJ Pats acquisition posted the following on Nov 2.

The New England #Patriots are trading WR N’keal Harry to the #Rams in return for Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Cooper Kupp, and a first round pick. Matt Stafford has his long awaited offensive weapon. #NFLTradeDeadline

Seems credible....

:lmao:

No big deal. Twitter is a bit of a land mine field lately that way. That is why I try say allegedly now when posting from an unconfirmed Twitter source. If he didn’t have that female anatomy part it would have fooled me for sure. 😊

Yeah, didn’t look deep enough into it. As I said, I saw people retweeting it. I’ll let you guys decide who gets to flog me.  :bag:

While I would love, as a fan, I’m not sure this is best deal for him. Green Bay seems like his best option even if he goes for minimum.

Sticking with updates from people with checkmarks this time, GB, SEA, KC, NO, and NE are still in the running. RapSheet suggesting still a few days away from picking a team.

Mac Jones is super accurate so a move to the Pats would make a lot of sense. That said, it's funny that Peoples-Jones can catch 60yd bombs from Mayfield but Beckham couldn't.

I think Green Bay is the best possible fit.

Imagine he helps Green Bay go deep into playoffs. He will maximize his earnings.
Imagine he improvises, runs a wrong route, gets AR a pick six and the next series doesn't sniff a target while he's open doing jumping jack's in the end zone and Crosby is warming up for his 28 yard inevitable miss so there's no net to OBJ to take his frustration out on so punts the kickoff tee into the stands so Lafleur has to walk across the field and ask to borrow one from the visitors side and gets flagged for taunting because he's obviously trying to get his opponents COVID positive and the Packers lose by 1 and have to play on a Wednesday night because the whole team tests maybe pseudo positive? I'm not sure if even the Giants will resign him for next year.

Good scenario! 🤪

I think that is correct for GB and for KC and for any other destination with an accomplished QB.  No reason for him to go to a place without an accomplished QB with skills to make him thrive.

First place I thought of was GB and Aaron Rodgers with OBJ.  If he winds up in KC he'd be expected to produce right out of the gates because right now KC is struggling.  He would be viewed as the instant savior to turn around their season and KC's issues  run deeper than a #2 WR as they have an atrocious defense so a lightning rod like OBJ would be a scapegoat if  things went South..

Rodgers will be back so Odell would have a 'grace period' to adjust, something he would not have in KC.  A-Rod is playing great, possibly the best in the NFL right now whereas Mahomes is not  playing great.  In addition to playing  great  Rodgers has got a HUGE chip on his  shoulder wanting to prove himself and we saw how he lit a fire under himself after the opening game loss and how poorly Love played in his absence.  GB will want to keep him around and make him happy.  He's never had a 2nd WR of OBJ's caliber.  Everything lines up perfectly in  GB.

He would fit  hand-in-glove.  He's already got his full salary  from  Cleveland so anything  extra is gravy for  this  year.  He'd have to earn an extension no matter where he goes but GB he won't have to be responsible for turning a sagging team around ALA KC and he would not be the focus of media scrutiny since Rodgers has a glaring  spotlight aimed his direction.

Far less immediate pressure, less expectations of turning a season around.  Near guarantee of making the post-season AND the cherry on top is he'd face Cleveland in a nationally televised game on CHRISTMAS DAY! 🎅🎄🎁

OBJ is "taking his time"

ran it thru by bullfeces translator and it spit out "isn't getting the offers he thought he'd be getting"

Also may not have a burning desire to play this weekend. Risky move for any team signing him to more than a one year deal.
Every week that he doesn't sign, he loses since anything he receives is a bonus added to the money he's already banked.  Game checks are paydays.

He is motivated to sign before Sunday.  Best case is to ink the contract later in the week, as long as he can so he gets a mini-BYE-week to refresh his  body.  Don't forget he suffered a torn ligament in his knee last year, came back six weeks EARLY this  year and then  dinged up his shoulder.  Not just idle speculation he's nursing multiple injuries, he is clearly banged-up so an  entire  week's rest is a blessing.

I think he signs last second as long as he can stretch it so  he gets this weeks 'bonus-gravy' game check.
