WR prospects (1 Viewer)

Can anyone explain to me why people contend last year's rookie WR class is not as good as this years? Last year the hyped rookie WR are Dez, Benn, Mike Will, Mardy Gilyard, kid who went to Denver, etc.

I look at this year's rookie class and all I see is AJ green...and maybe Greg Little.

This year's class isn't nearly as deep as 2010 (or any typical year), but it does have an uberstud (Green), another likely stud - big WR (Julio Jones-Bama), a boom/bust big WR (Jon Baldwin-Pitt), a few speedsters (Torrey Smith-Maryland, Jerrel Jernigan-Troy, Titus Young-Boise St), and some solid pros in the making (Leonard Hankerson-MiamiFL, Vincent Brown, SDSt) - Little leads the upside/project group, and Im still watching tape on some of the second/third tier guys, but usually you can go 25 deep and find guys who will stick in the NFL, just doesn't feel that way this year. Last year you had guys like David Gettis and Antonio Brown last til the late rounds, and guys like Danario Alexander, Stephen Williams, and Seyi Ajirotutu go undrafted.

This class took a big hit with Blackmon and Floyd going back to school. Initially, the class looked really promising. Now, like Bloom said, it is top heavy and shallow.

From what I have read, AJ Green is being called a better draft prospect than Dez Bryant last year, and Todd McShay actually called AJ Green the best prospect since Calvin Johnson.

What do you think about Jeff Maehl? He put up pretty big numbers for the number 2 team in the nation. He made a lot of big plays and seems to be pretty fast.

I don't think it's that bad. This year guys like Cecil Shorts and DeAndre Brown who will be about the 20th WR off the board, and they have pretty great upside.

Personally, I like last year's more. I wouldn't trade Dez for Green and would even be reluctant to give up Thomas for him.

Having said that, the long term strength of a class will hinge largely on unexpected superstars. The 2001 draft provides a great example. David Terrell and Koren Robinson were thought to be the cream of the crop. Rod Gardner and Freddie Mitchell also went high. 10 years later it's clear that Reggie Wayne, Chad Johnson, and Santana Moss were the best available. Wayne and Johnson had top 10 overall talent even though no one billed them as such.

We see this sort of thing almost every year with guys like Steve Smith, Anquan Boldin, Vincent Jackson, DeSean Jackson, and Mike Williams emerging from 2nd+ round to become Pro Bowl players. There might be a couple of those gems in this year's draft as well. Until we see how these players actually perform in the NFL, it's hard to speak definitively about the strength of the group overall.

That's one reason why I think those "report cards" that football writers hand out to teams after draft day are a waste of time. Even if a guy might have a certain consensus value, you don't really know if he was a reach or a steal until he straps on the pads and plays a few seasons.

I think this year's WR class is like most others. There are a few guys with first round talent and a handful of likely top 100 picks who have the potential to greatly exceed expectations.

I just found it funny during the 09 draft, people were saying the following year will have 10 Michael Crabtree-like WR prospects. Granted that a few surprises came up, but generally I think the 09 WR draft class was overall better than the 10'

Jeff Maehl looks like a great college WR, good size, long arms. However, IMO he looks like someone who would get run over and trampled.

Michael Floyd, Justin Blackmon both stayed in school... Jon Baldwin had a very weak year and left on a low note, that's why this class hasn't lived up to expectations.

Thats a bold statement. AJ Green will be a top 5 pck this year for a reason. I love Dez but would rather have AJ Green by a good chunk. D. Thomas isn't even close to being the WR Green is. Green has all the physical tools and unlike a Thomas has the polish as well.

Seems like a glut of WRs in the NFL. MY question is what teams are that desperate at WR this year?

AFC

East

NE is fine, NYJ almost have too many, Miami is OK, and Buffalo is going to be good because many of their young guys got a lot of playing time last year. Sure, NE could use a little speed, Miami too but their WRs are not terrible.

North

Pitt is fine, Balt has plenty if Mason returns, Cinci is in flux but Shipley, SImpson, and Caldell look promising, Cleveland needs some help but tey need a QB too.

South

Indy, Hou, TN and Jax all seem fine

West

Oak has Ford, Murphy and DHB, Den is fine, KC needs a better WR2/3, SD needs some work perhaps but they might look to FA.

NFC

East

NYG, DAL, and Philly are all in great shape, Washington migt want to upgrade but who is the QB, Rex Grossman?

North

Chicago for sure, the rest are all pretty strong

South

Nothing screams lots of help needed there. Car still as Smith, NO might shuffle some, ATL has ROddy WHite which is as good as 2 WRs for most teams :bag:

West

SF needs a WR2 maybe, Sea has a lot of young guys, St Louis too, AZ has Fitz and Breaston.

My point is there aren't a ton of immediate needs in the NFL right now so I don't think any of this incoming class is relly going to explode in 2011. Just my opinion although there are a couple I like that are not named Green and Jones.

Little misleading for the Jets, Holmes, Edwards and Smith are all done with the contracts, leaving only Cotchery as the only starting caliber WR under contract. While I know ideally they would love to bring back both Holmes and Edwards, I dont see it happening. And if Smith hopes to land Cribbs type $$ he is a goner imho. So NYJ at best will have Cotchery, Holmes or Edwards..and ???? With the 29th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the NYJ select ....WR.

I think you really need to look longer term than just next year. Typically, WR's take 2-3 years to develop.

Indy will be a prime spot for a #1 WR in 2 years.

STL

CHI

CAR also - SS's skills deteriorate in the next 2 years or so you would imagine

WAS

SEA- even though they have young guys, no one has really emerged as the absolute #1 guy

SD

CIN - same with SEA

OAK

#2's

ATL

NYJ

Not one of those players would start for the Super Bowl teams. Just sayin'.
James Jones isn't better than everyone on that list
You are wrong twice here.
Twice? how clever....If you say so.. lol..

James Jones didn't start for a Super Bowl team.
Also, he's better than everyone on that list. So wrong twice.
