WR Rashee Rice, KC (8 Viewers)

Do we think he breaks out from the other WRs? Looks to be building chemistry w Mahomes and schedule is super juicy after Jets game.

He feels like a prime example of a rookie who will be hitting full stride just in time for the final playoff push and through the playoffs when you need him most.

Sold! Pulled Jayden Reed from my flex spot last night & just now swapped him out for Rice. Let's go over this, okay so they have Travis Kelce and, and who else? A list of names? How is the opportunity to break not there?!!

Last week
51% route rate (season high)
33% target per route run rate
target multiple times on 3rd down and in red zone
2 times tackled inside like the 3 yard line

Stat guys love this guy right now

Acquire now
They played the bears plus a lot of those stats came in garbage time. Not saying he's not a solid stash I'd just temper expectations based on last game.

Too many ifs in the KC WR room.
Toney stays health and overcomes his drops
Moore takes continued steps forward
Justyn Ross continues his recovering from ankle and neck injuries and forces his way into the lineup
MVS and Watson continue to get snaps

I like Rice, but this is a crowded WR room, and for this year at least, I don't expect Rice to be a significant contributor to a fantasy roster.

I don’t think any WR in KC will break out as long a Kelce is there. Mahomes spreads it around too much.
Tyreek Hill would disagree.

Rice was about a foot away from scoring two touchdowns last week. Seems like a very smart receiver who can find open space. An older rookie (23) so his body has matured a little more than the average rookie. Reminds me a little of Cooper Kupp. Right now he’s the best WR Mahomes has had since Tyreek Hill

Yeah but all those guys stink. If one WR can emerge he will be locked into playing time.

MVS and Watson will be easily leap frogged. Those other three are just as likely to emerge this year as Rice. Rice is a great dynasty target. I could be wrong about this year, but it will be very interesting to see who takes over the reigns by end of season and becomes KCs WR1.

You might want to overpay for him in dynasty. He seems like he can pickup where Kelce will leave off more than any other player they have rostered.

He is a "complete receiver'. Not a speed or niche guy. He can play 80 to 90% of snaps a game and be a focal point in the RZ.

Below is a puff piece I suppose & Rice is a speculative add, but when you know you're not going to have priority on Tuesday, this is how it's done!

"Andy Reid has taken notice of Rice’s emergence and has issued a challenge for Rice ahead of the team’s Week 4 Sunday Night Football matchup against the New York Jets. “He’s coming off a nice game, now present it again and take another step this week,”... he looks like he’s getting more on the same page with Pat (Mahomes),” Reid also said of Rice. Pat spends a lot of time with him. He’s got the right attitude, and so it’s (about) consistency.” ... Rice is part of a Kansas City offense that excels at scheming players open and gives them open space once the ball is in their hands. That fits Rice’s skillset perfectly, as Rice excels after the catch..." https://heavy.com/sports/kansas-city-chiefs/andy-reid-issues-challenge-rashee-rice/

As can be found elsewhere, the article also notes that Reid is less apt to trust rookies. So a crowded WR room isn't the only obstacle Rice is up against.

EDIT: Obstacles I meant to add that he appears to be overcoming.

i agree that Reid hasnt Trusted rookies in the past but Imo the chiefs success is linked to rices emergence
You mean going forward, am I right? Because to this point you'd need to substantiate, which of course would be of great interest. Yo, I'm not privy to non-public information. What'd I say wrong, huh? Bada-choo

Sorry never finished my thought. Of the known talents on this team, is anyone going to match Juju's 78-933-3 (hopefully match the TD number)? They need someone to emerge and at this moment the most likely is Rice - leads team WR in targets and receptions

As a result of an injury apocalypse and the Patriots Bourne mirage, I needed a spot start.

I'm working on a process where I comb through snap rates and targets on the old fbg data center every Tuesday night. I go team by team and look for trends in all of that stuff. It takes about 4 hours because halfway through, I start getting ideas for trades, combing through KTC league data and start firing offers out there as I comb through waivers and set them all up. 5 managed leagues is a lot of work for me, compared to 2 last year. I think I'm settling on a specific Monday usage pod that I'll try to get through on commutes. I don't get time to listen to all of my favorites, there's really too many. It's funny to have a rotation that you'll lean into based on your mood or whatever.

WR Snap share across 4 games in descending order:
Skyy Moore 69/58/65/59- more or less a slight downward trend.
MVS- 63/82/53/54
Waston -29/46/40/61
Rice- 31/18/51/46- more or less a slight upward trend
Toney 25/28/3/24

Targets:
Rice- 5/2/7/5
Moore- 3/4/6/2
Toney 5/5/1/2
Watson 4/5/3/1

4th in snaps (and gaining on Moore?) and first in targets. It's a teeny bit of a spark for this guy to get going. I don't have air yards info so no idea if Watson vs MVS is as 1 for 1 on the cardio workout king vs a guy that has some other specific spacing or blocking role.

Facing Minnesota who's given up LEAGUE HIGH 49.2 ppr points to WRs this year.
Shoot to kill brothers.

Grabbed him in all leagues last week. Hanging on tight for a stretch run ascension.
Turd in punchbowl- the usage was down, we just got a TD. Not sure why yet but seems like they're just experimenting with stuff. He might have a safe-ish 4-45 floor but the usage this week (unless it was injury related or script related, not sure) was down. 30% snaps. Toney and Ross got the extra looks this week. Zombie Toney 5-5-1-2-6. Out of the blue Ross- had two going into this week, 4 this week.

Awesome brother. He's out there in dynasty league.

It doesn't make any sense. All the guys metrics say he's doing great. Their WRs are absolute trash. And yet he still can't get on the field.

Picked him up, then read this article that seemed very straightforward. key takeaways after reading.

1. Will he more involved going forward? short answer: Yes
When asked on Monday whether the first-year man is doing enough to earn increased playing time, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy gave a resoundingly positive response.
"Yeah, I absolutely think he is," Nagy said.
2. Why did his usage seem to drop in week 5? short answer: WR by committee
Grabbed him in all leagues last week. Hanging on tight for a stretch run ascension.

This article basically answered this weird usage,
Nagy has been consistent in reminding the world that instead of having a go-to leading wide receiver like JuJu Smith-Schuster a year ago, this will likely be a true committee contribution at the receiver spot.
3. Short term vs longterm conclusion on how to see if Rice will be good week to week? short answer: he's better at zone coverage, but will develop more to also beat man coverage.
Rice, for example, averages a team-leading 4.47 yards per route run against zone coverage but is posting a measly 0.38 Y/RR versus man coverage.
Maybe we can see what types of D they face? maybe we focus on D that favors zone in their matchups?
Week 6 Den looks like they are better at man, but they do just blow. IDK, I've never looked into D's preference in coverage maybe someone does?

This is why metrics cannot be used as a stand alone tool in analysis. You have to also strongly consider what your eyes tell you and determine what information is useful.

Rice will be startable as a back end WR 2 by season’s end. We just have to be patient.

Steady improvement in Week 6 over Week 5.

Week 6 - 35/71 (49%)snaps, 4 /4 receptions 72 yards. This rose from the down week 5 at 30% of snaps.

Compare to the others in week 6
PlayerSnapsRec/TarYardsTD
R. Rice35/714/4720
MVS40/710/100
S. Moore37/712/4220
K. Toney31/713/691

I think rationale coaching has him getting more snaps over MVS, but we'll see. The WR by committee seems to be the main drawback, but that philosophy could easily be swayed with Mahomes clearly favoring a target that he looks for whenever he is out there.

The ticker is moving up. I love him on the bench.

Seven Rounds in Heaven
Chiefs rookie Rashee Rice winning off the LOS with his suddenness to gain inside leverage for an easy first down.

The second-round pick out of SMU continues to be one of the best rookie WRs this season.

The Draft Network
One could argue Rashee Rice is the Chiefs’ best WR right now. #ChiefsKingdom

Cream rising
Yep. His snap share is going to move up every week. The ability is all there - just has to learn the game and he will more and more each week. It could be next year before it all comes together, but it could be this year too and when it does this guy is going to be really valuable.

It's not just the receptions and YAC that gives hope. I noticed him making a handful of blocks and his tackle of Simmons after the INT was a very important contribution.

I also heard that Justin Watson was hurt. While not the biggest news, fewer snap shares to compete for can elevate the growth process.

They seem to play pretty different roles. This could be huge though, on the Justyn Ross front.

Rashee Rice an early Chiefs Surprise in Route DVOA

Season leaders in route DVOA (value added per route):
1. Tyreek Hill
2. Brandon Aiyuk
3. Rashee Rice
4. Stefon Diggs
5. Davante Adams
6. Keenan Allen
7. AJ Brown
8. Mike Evans
9. Ja'marr Chase
10. Justin Jefferson
11. Nico Collins
12. Deandre Hopkins

He's struggling against man coverage (50% success rate), but his 83% success rate against zone is right up there with some of the best power slot WRs like Lamb and Amon-Ra. As a Chiefs fan and a dynasty owner, I'm very excited about this guy. He's clearly the most talented WR on the team.
