WR strategy? (1 Viewer)

Just wanted to start a discussion about WR strategy. What I mean is do you prefer to start deep/big play threats or slot/underneath guys? What combination do you use if any?

I'm getting frustrated with the lack of consistency out of my big play guys...i understand it's a trade off and you have to average it out over the course of the year but it's tough when you lose by a couple points b/c your big name WR puts up 5 pts or less(I play non PPR). Guys like D Jax, Jennings, Calvin, Marshall, Austin etc etc. These guys are studs and on decent offenses with decent QB's but it's tough getting the consistency (notice I didn't use Fitz as an example)

Just wondering if I should be mixing up my starters...I don't know, perhaps I'm over thinking this.

Should I be targeting guys like Harvin, Bess, Welker instead of the big name guys? I know Welkers production is down but this type of player is what I mean. (Had hopes of getting Harvin in a trade but that's not gonna happen after this week.) I could get B White off of WW who may develop into this type of player.

Looks like I may pick up my third loss this week in another close one...just looking for some kind of an edge regarding the WR's if anyone has anything to offer.

I play in a .5 PPR league...this would be even more important in a 1 PPR league.

My basic strategy is to get guys that get targets, especially in more potent offenses. I basically try and draft high-target guys above all else. TD's are great, but I don't think you can predict them. There are a handfull of guys who you could call big TD guys, you know, the H. Nicks, R. Moss, Megatron, Boldin, etc. Who just do well in the red zone and catch TD's...but outside of that, it's a crap shoot.

I like to ideally have 2 PPR/target guys, and 1 home-run threat. My current WR corp is M. Austin, A. Boldin, S. Moss, Steve Smith (NYG), and I've had a handful of WR5's this season. I drafted Austin because he's a good ppr guy with great YAC ability, so he's sort of both. Boldin is a decent PPR and a good TD threat. S. Smith and S. Moss I traded for. Both of them were on my radar, and I missed out on Moss but got him in the pre-season for Garcon straight-up. S. Smith I STOLE for cheap after his slow start for T. Hightower.

The guys who scare me are the guys like Desean Jackson or P. Garcon who have 4 catches for 120 yards and a TD or 2 catches for 15 yards. I HATE that from my WR's. Ideally, my strategy is to have 2 guys who are pretty sure to get 6/80/0 every week, and then 1 guy who could go off. A 6/80/0 line in my league is ~11 points, so if that's his baseline, I won't get killed if the HR guy doesn't go off.

But that's just me. If I were in a standard, non-PPR league, I could argue for the HR guy some more I guess. One man's strategy.
