WW2 Nazi items (1 Viewer)

Long story short, we have to finish cleaning out my dad's house in the next few days since he passed away. He had some old Nazi items that his uncle had given him upon returning from WW2. Specifically, a soldier's belt and helmet, as well as a Nazi flag. What is the best way to deal with these? Is there any organization that can positively benefit from them? Do I just throw them away? Kind of at a loss here.

Do not throw them away. Even though those items might make some feel uncomfortable—they are a part of history.  You should email some museums to see if they are interested

Just emailed a WW2 museum in my state - of course I got an auto-reply that they are closed due to the pandemic and not to expect a response at this time. Lucky me.

Also fantastic user name for the person posting the thread. I feel like you could have been a character in Inglorious Basterds, teamed up with Aldo Raine.

Punched, even.

I feel like there was a similar thread a while back...maybe it was Japanese stuff. Iirc, there were non profit outifts that helped.
Yeah I remember that one. They return them to the families if possible.

Im on the fence about that but understand both sides. Hard to have a conversation about that when everything is judged by today’s standards.

An extended family member is Jewish and has a collection of holocaust relics.  He displayed them one day when we came to visit - my son's a WW2 nerd - and it was really powerful.  It was good for my son to help put some perspective in the numbers and diagrams of troop movements.  You might be able to find someone like that who seeks out those items for anti-Nazi reasons.

I have a nazi item from ww2.
I can’t paste a link of the item, but have you ever seen those photos of hitler speaking and he has this huge banners behind him?

my uncle was in the war and after storming a theater or similar meeting hall, he ripped one of theses banners off the wall and carried it in his pack for the remainder of the war.

just before he passed he gave it to me.

Obv I don’t subscribe to the ideology,  it it is an amazing piece of historic memorabilia. The canvas is thick and the red paint is soaked in. There are bullet holes and singe marks in it.

it is safely locked away in my basement and wrapped in plastic.  I don’t ever take it out unless the topic comes up. I’ve never had it appraised, I don’t even know where to go or if i even want to. I respect giving it to a museum, but I don’t want to. There is a certain authenticity to it that you can’t appreciate in a museum.  And to put aside the meaning of the banner, the fact that he carried it throughout his tour means so much more.  What that must have “saw” from his tour is unthinkable. Unfortunately he’s passed, so I will never get all the stories, but i can only imagine.
