Watching the game, at the top of 2nd inning Nady was pulled from the outfield.

Keep tuned.

UPDATED:

Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte are involved in a trade.

No word on team(s) involved.

Pending medical review.

From BP:

Update: The final package from the Yankees is Ross Ohlendorf, Jose Tabata, Phil Coke, and George Kontos, according to multiple sources. Rotoworld is reporting a different set of prospects, including Austin Jackson, so I continue to follow this.

I thought the Pirates fired McClatchy? This deal is awful for the Pirates. Tabata and 3 stiffs
I don't know where these guys were ranked as far as their farm system is concerned, but a quick review of the minor league numbers left a lot to be desired. Tabata doesn't even look that good, a low OPS OF with decent speed? Meh...

Marte was the gem in this deal. Huge trade for the Yankees picking him up. He is going to really help that bullpen. Not sure what all the love for Nady is all about.

Surprised the Pirates didn't look for better pitching. The big prospect in this deal was a hitter. Tabata still has a while to go. He has the tools, but he has a very questionable attitude.

Big market team (the biggest!) with the largest payroll gets two useful players having good years. Small market team gets nothing in return. I thought Dave Littlefield had left. Life in MLB.

The Bucs did get Bobby Hill and Jose Hernandez for Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton a few years ago. They couldn't afford Ramirez, so swapped him for next to nothing.

Who's next to go for zip? Bay? LaRoche? Is the team in the rebuilding stage for the millionth time since '93?

Hope the Rays management has something in the works, or else that's a pretty embarrassing offer to get topped on.

Is this a new phenomenon?
By no means. The rich get richer. Leave it to the NFL and NBA to come up with something as silly as a salary cap. PNC Park in Pittsburgh, however, is one beautiful stadium.
Something has to be done, agreed. A salary cap would cause an uproar from the big boys.

i was under the impression that the pirates were asking too much for nady alone. i had no idea that nady plus a nice lefty RP could've been had for a pupu platter. maybe i just don't know enough about those prospects, but it seems like brignac and a decent SP prospect would've topped that.

And the small boys, and the players, etc.Instituting a cap would cause the big spenders to reel in their crazy spending ways and would hurt their chances of succes.

A cap would piss off the free agents because they'd no longer have the Yankees to throw ridiculous money at them to either sign them OR drive up their price on their own team.

And the small-market teams that make boneheaded decisions would no longer have an "out" for their complete lack of success. Right now, the Pirates and teams like them can cry about salary disparity. But when you trade two of your most valuable trade chips for a bag of balls, you lose some of the right to complain about salary being the only reason you can't compete.

Not to mention, with a cap in place you can be sure that revenue sharing would be all but gone. A lot of the smaller market teams have been able to turn a nice profit in recent seasons despite losing 95 games per year simply due to this. To a lot of them, profit >>>>>>>>>>> winning.

Just a complete steal by Cashman. Yanks are a contendor now IMO. Nady supplies similar #s to Matsui IMO. Marte adds to a now dominant bullpen. And they only lost 1 prospect (who lost a lot of luster this year).

Pirates getting McCutcheon :kicksrock:

According to the New York Post, the Pirates will be getting Daniel McCutchen and Jeff Karstens along with Jose Tabata and Ross Ohlendorf from the Yankees for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. It was widely reported last night (including by the Post itself) that George Kontos and Phil Coke were in the deal in place of McCutchen and Karstens. This is clearly better for the Pirates. McCutchen is arguably the Yankees' best remaining pitching prospect, though he's not a big upside guy and he doesn't rank with Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy. Karstens isn't much more than middle relief fodder, but neither was Coke. Jul. 26 - 11:21 am et
OK all of a sudden this turns into a decent haul for Pit.

Tell me about McCutchen and Karstens vs Coke and Kontos.

Karstens is nothing more than a long reliever/5th starter. Hes probably slightly better than Coke and Kontos who I never heard of but IMO hes not even noteworthy. McCutchen has potential to be a 3 starter. Hes sort of on the Horne/Kennedy prospect level. Yanks have enough pitching depth in the minors so its not gonna hurt them much but Pit definitely got a better deal today as opposed to the one said last night. Dont overlook Ohlendorf. I still think he has the stuff and potential to be the best of these 4 "prospects".

This is not the Ramirez deal. The cubs wanted lofton. The pirates agreed to take less in the deal if they would also take Ramirez. They aren't going to win this year and they aren't going to win next year, so Nady and Marte don't have much value with this team. They got what they believe is the best deal they could for these guys. I just hope they ahve some skill at evaluating talent. It will take a few years to know though.

Nady's having a career year in '08 but don't make the kid into something he's not. Coming into this season, he's basically a league average player who has some pop and questionable plate discipline. The Pirates clearly sold high on him.

I like the Marte pickup quite a bit for the Yankees. Nice bullpen piece.

I look at the sequence of events here. The Bucs swapped Oliver Perez to the Mets for Nady, and suddenly Perez is pitching like the guy the Pirates had hoped he'd be. Then, they send Nady (having a good year) and Marte (likewise) for four minor-leagues, one of whom was suspended 50 games in 2006 for being on meds for ADD (???!!). So, if you add it up, the Mets have a fine 3rd starter, the Yanks have 2 guys they can plug in for productivity, and the Pirates have, once again, a little more minor league depth. No Phil Hughes. No Darrell Rasner. No Ian Kennedy----which is what the market should have been. I'd have to believe there were better offers elsewhere.Am not sure why the Bucs deal with the Yankees for any reason. They sent Dock Ellis, Ken Brett, and some guy named Willie Randolph there 22 years ago for George "Doc" Medich. The Yankees went on the World Series that year. And they once traded with NY to get Steve Kemp when Kemp could no longer throw or swing the bat, just to be rid of someone.

Well, the Pirates also tried to trade Jason Thompson in his prime to the Yankees for Jim Spencer (at the end of his career). Fortunately, the Commissioner vetoed the deal, at a time when commissioners could do such things.
