Xfinity X1 from Comcast (1 Viewer)

Payne

Footballguy
We have the old school Motorola from Comcast and it's been a little buggy lately.

Was looking to swap it out and I see they offer the X1 anyroom DVR.

I wouldn't mind anyroom DVR. But I've read a few complaints about the system.

Anyone have experience with it? Worth the upgrade?

Thanks

I have it...some minor complaints* but overall it's worth it, especially since we recently added a 3rd TV

*no clock or surround sound support on the satellite boxes

Guide is different (not necessarily bad but not fully used to it yet)

Seems to lag sometimes when searching guide

Can't delete multiple programs easily (or maybe I'm just stupid)

Remote is less functional (biggest issue is no ability to swap TV inputs - I.e. Swap between cable and Blu-Ray)

So let me tell you my x story.

I got my free upgrade in September by a shifty 3rd part technician. After multiple phone calls I got another com cast tech to come out. He pretty much said we did that guy do. Oh I also got the free modem/router upgrade. So still having issues and I keep calling and another tech comes out. He tests everything and finds a bad line and replaces my one box. He also asks about my modem ...I say it sucks. He calls and has them set it up as just a modem and I can go back to using my router...

so success with that.

service was better but still not great. I will say now the last 2 months I have no complaints. Has been working pretty well.

my cons...no pausing live TV on the "sattelite" boxes. My surround sound sometimes goes in an out when the show flips from dolby digital to whatever a commercial is broadcasted.

The remotes have a small delay sometimes

um my sattelite box is surround...

Were you given a new box? Heard they are hard to come by and some customers are getting older boxes or something??

Scheduled to come out Wed.

Thanks again.

No surround support on satellite boxes could be an issue down the road however.

I thought I hated cablevision and optimum until I got comcast for my beach house. They are the worst

Thinking of just bagging them all together for a roku 2 down there

I got new boxes and I can set surround on my sattelite boxes and my tuner is auto detecting it as dolby

Hmm...I'll have to double check. Wife was there for setup and tech said main box had to go in basement because we had surround there. It was a female tech so who knows if she knew what she was talking about or not

It's the only TV we have surround set up on anyway so not really an issue for us but now I'm curious

Unless they revised their policy, you have to have triple-play with Comcast in order to have the X1, right? As someone with no home phone, and no intention of getting one, I can't even consider X1 because of that. It kinda pisses me off that they put that kind of arbitrary restriction on it.

Just got service this week. Double play with Internet and x1.

You can watch your dvr in any room but can't pause live tv, start a recording, or manage your dvr on any tv except the main tv. I would rather have separate boxes that can all pause and record separately. The extra space is nice though.

you can set a recording watch a recording and do everything on any box. The satellite do not have a live TV bufferyou can do all the same functions on any box 4 tuners on the main

eta ... i will usually start recording a game and watch it that way so i can pause it.

Hmm, thanks, I may have to check into this again.

Been with Comcast for just over two years. Have the old Motorola DVR and a second smaller unit hooked up to a second TV. Current bill is coming in around $190 for internet and TV.

Did the "just cancel my service" dance with the gal on the phone. My demands? 1. No contract 2. Want the X1. 3. Need to significantly lower my bill. 4. I'm not paying an installation fee for the upgrade to the X1.

All demands met after a lot of negotiating. Wondering if I could have got more. New bill will be $140 for the double play (internet and TV).

Nice job!

Can you self-install the X1 or do they need to come out?

They are going to come out and install it ($100 charge), but the sales gal told me she would credit it back to me the day after the install.

I've has Comcast since January, just noticed tonight that there is no way to pause live TV. I'm out of town a lot and usually drunk when I'm home so I've never noticed before now. Is this new? Wtf.

Have had it for a few months and the bells and whistles are nice, but not being able to pause live tv on the satellite box sucks. Many folks also experience audio sync issues on recorded programs with the satellite box. The guide is very slow in its responsiveness too.

That said, it makes searching for programs much easier, the extra space is great, and being able to watch a recorded show on any tv is nice. I'll hang onto it for a bit and wait for Comcast to fix the issues. They're getting a ton of complaints so they'll get around to it eventually.

Wow, nice to see this as I was just coming on here to search for an X1 thread.

I have the Triple Play--5 boxes, all big older ones, two HDRs, one HD and the other two just the old black digital. We have all the movie channels, the Blast 50 internet speed and we have their alarm system. Our bill was approaching the high $300 mark and we managed to get on a deal where we got it down to $290.00 for one year--going up $25 the next year. So better--but still alot.

Last night the Comcast door to door sellers came by and offered us the X1 system--4 boxes and everything we have above plus free install and the 105 internet speed for $240.00 locked in for two years. It seems a little too good to be true, but I have heard the X-1 has problems (and read the ones posted above), just curious if anyone has had newer problems or seen the above ones resolved.

I asked the guys alot of questions last night and the one thing that sort of struck me is they mentioned they have to reboot their boxes quite often. The one guy said Friday night is reboot night every week at his house. I found that a little odd. However, I really want that bump in internet speed--that and the price are two big selling points for me.

Just got the cloud dvr working correctly.

this is awesome
Just got it working correctly? What wasn't working?
the app was not recognizing my dvr. I gave up on it for a bit. Had time tonight app is working swimmingly
You're talking about just downloading the DVR shows to a mobile device right?
yes. It wasn't available in my area. Now I can use the app to schedule shows watch on demand and live tv. And now download recorded shows onto my phone to take with me.I can only watch live TV at home.

but basically whenever they start charging per box I can now return 1 or 2 and use my tablet or laptop now

Cool, love the live TV. DTV had a live TV app but really didn't have much of a choice. Comcast has all the channels I get which is sweet.

The wife loves the App, she downloads all the crappy shows she likes and watches them on her lunch hour or while waiting for the kids.

Yup....pretty sweet now it's synced right

gonna add a bunch of shows now I don't normally record to have in case lol

Same here, just have to wade through their bull crap on the phone and be firm that you don't want Phone. They push it quite aggressively as "must have," it's not true.

After several years with FIOS, they pissed me off and I'm going to give Comcast a try. It's been several years since I've had Comcast, but I hear the X1 is pretty slick. Since it has been a few years, I was hoping I might get some info from the masses.

We're going to get our own modem. I see that there's a pretty standard Arris model that's available on Amazon Prime. No problem there. I need a wireless router, though. I haven't bought one in years, because Verizon's was built in to their router. Any suggestions on a router? I don't need a top of line, but I am willing to spend a little money for something durable.

Another question: With Verizon, we had a 50 mbps service. I see with Comcast that they seem to offer 25 and 75. We have 8 devices (laptop, 2 phones, 2 tablets, wireless printer, blu-ray, and looking to get a Smart TV). The kids watch videos and we surf the internet. We're not gamers or watching streaming movies constantly....we may watch a Netflix movie from time-to-time. The 50 mbps serves us fine with Verizon. My gut tells me that we'll want to go 75 with Comcast and not try to dial back to 25. Anyone have a similar setup and share their experience?

Thanks guys!

Just switched over from centurylink/ddirectv. Hate comcast but hate centurylink even more. Got the x1 setup and it works well, Only thing I miss us PIP. Directv had it but cant figure it out on x1. Internet speed is night and day difference.

Here's the router I use, works like a charm. It's in the basement of a 1950's rancher and I get a strong signal to the main floor.

There are two primary negative to X1. First, only the master box can actually pause, all the slave boxes have to be recording the shows or they can't pause. Secondly, the responsiveness of the boxes leaves a bit to be desired. It's not terrible, you just can't click click click through the menu super fast. Otherwise I am really happy with the X1 platform, price, and internet speed .

Cool. Thanks for the information. What speed do you have with your service?

Anyone else have any insight?

I just bought a Assus router because I felt my older Linksys wasn't providing me optimal speed.

With the upgraded router, I've tested download speeds over 100Mbsduring off-peak hours. Peak hours is still around 50-60Mbs.

And James is correct about the menu. At times it's worse than others. But it can be annoying. There are times when you'll select "page down" a few times......the system will pause.....and then all at once, page down several times. Then you have to page back up. But those issues are few and far between.

The same thing happens now with my FIOS, so I'm used to that. Agreed though, that it can be frustrating. At least I'm used to it.

Thanks for the tip on the router. I'll check them out.

I'll check my speed when I get home. We have a bunch of devices hooked up and speed's never been an issue for me.

Probably the best thing about X1 is the ability to search for a specific show or type of show. It's very easy to find and isolate a specific genre like sports, movies, etc. Searching for a specific show is as easy as typing in the first couple of letters of the name on your remote. I was not a fan of it at first, mainly due to the slow response and not being able to pause all boxes, but now I really like it and I often find shows/movies using it that I otherwise wouldn't have known about.

You don't have to go through the trouble of testing your speed. I was interested more in the speed package that you purchased from Comcast.

The boost thingy.

Recently got the x1, got off to a bad start with getting an HD signal... now that it's all set up properly I think it's fantastic... nice add-on... love the sports scores, pandora, and especially the audio search.

I look forward to where they go with it from here, it's pretty impressive

Yep ... I was hella pissed as I was a freaking guinea pig. It was not ready for release. It was so bad I had a persoanl number to call a tech directly .... lol

But now I can't complain at all. I record random stuff to downlaod on my phone

We have been very happy with it. Being able to see trailers on movies before watching is a nice feature. We have not had one problem yet.

If you're talking about a bunch of recordings of one show, you can go to the show in your recordings and arrow right and an X will show up to delete all. Or something like that...typing from memory.

ETA: When I got my X1 installed it actually was cheaper than what I was doing before and now I have more movie channels that I barely watch!

One thing I love are the trailers associated with on-demand, pay channel, and in-theatres now movies. I've come across a bunch of movies that I enjoyed watching that I never would have without checking out the trailers first.

Plus the whole, spell what you're looking for with the keypad on the remote is all kind of amazing and awesome.

This is my favorite thing by far. Pulls up everything just by spelling the keypad. Also, for when my kid watches ####, just typing "kids" pulls up the "Kid's Zone" which has a bunch of ####ty kid's shows and movies for him to watch. Just recently showed him how to do that himself. Rules.

None of this #### when my kids were young. I had to watch vcr tapes of The Lion King, Lelo and Stich, etc like a million times each. And Barney...oh the horror.
