Imagine you are an NFL QB that has won four Super Bowls and you are about to retire. Would you have rather won the Super Bowl 4 times in 4 attempts and be undefeated or would you rather have played in five Super Bowls and lost one of them?

(for the sake of argument let's say the game you lost would be your fourth SB meaning you won your first and your last SB game)

I'm not sure I get what you are going for here? I mean I would never want to lose, so the 4-0 record is the way to go.

Are you going for the angle, that's it's better to win, when you have tasted defeat?

In another thread someone made the remark they would rather be 3-1 in the Super Bowl than 3-0. I mentioned that Terry Bradshaw said that his proudest achievement was he never lost a Super Bowl and that I was sure he wouldn't trade his 4-0 for 4-1.So I was wondering if anyone here would rather be in 5 Super Bowls and lose 1 or be in 4 Super Bowls and be undefeated.I think I know how this poll is going to go but I am curious...

Obviously you would want to lose because by being 4-0 instead of 4-1, you lost earlier in the playoffs or completely missed the playoffs.

I think most people "should" want to be in the Super Bowl as many times as possible, particularly if they come out of it with the same number of wins either way. Objectively speaking, it's no disgrace to be in the Super Bowl more times, even if you come out on the losing side. Honestly, do you think less of Jim Kelly than you do of, say, Boomer Esiason, or Vinny Testaverde or Drew Bledsoe, guys with more or less comparable career stats but with fewer trips to (and losses in) the Super Bowl?

The reason why people shy away from the one-loss scenario IMHO is that on the emotional level, losing the Super Bowl is such a huge letdown that you want to avoid it. It reminds me of the Broncos fans circa 1990 who were saying that they didn't want to go back to the Super Bowl again because of their fear of losing. It's irrational.

I voted 4-0, but if you are referring to Brady (or anyone in the future for that matter), I think the real debate is 4-0 or 5-1. I would rather be 5-1, but I could see some folks favoring the perfect record.

[Analogy]It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

I think throwing in the extra championship would make it a much easier question.

Am I the goat of the loss, did I play bad? Was my team 18-0 going into the Super Bowl (lol)? Did I play well enough to win, it just wasn't my teams day?

I think there are a bunch of questions that could sway answers.

I'm also one that usually says I'd rather have my team be there and lose than not have the chance to win a title of any kind. That would lean me towards 4-1, but I also think the 4-0 choice is very tempting if I'm the player (not the fan).

I think if you asked someone that has only played in one Super Bowl and lost I am sure he would say that he is glad he had the opportunity to play rather than not to play in it.Howver in this case you have won four times. Would going to one more (and losing) be better than going undeeated? I don't think so.

Easily 4-1

That would mean that I've led my team to more SB's than Montana or Bradshaw or Brady.

5 conference championships >> 4 conference championships

Sorry -- you lost if you didn't win the Super Bowl. You just lost prior to the Super Bowl if you record is 4-0. Selecting 4-0 here is illogical.

If I had a 16-year career, I'd much rather be 1-15 in the SB than 1-0. I'd prefer 2-14 over 2-0, and 3-13 over 3-0, and 4-12 over 4-0, and 5-11 over 5-0, and 6-10 over 6-0... and yes, I'd prefer 15-1 over 15-0.
