News would've been if they HADN'T cut him.

I sympathize with Saints fans on this one, we fought the kicker thing for a few years, can't figure out why they're so difficult to find.

And why I'm teaching my son to kick

Mehlaff coming in for work out and may start for Raiders game. I still hope they grab Carney though when the Giants release him.
:goodposting: I picked Mehlaff was one of my two kickers in the FBG contest early and forgot to remove him when he didn't make the team. Happy about this potential move. I figured the NO kicker "should" put up some really great numbers indoors and with that Off.

Awww, crap. I have Gramatica so I hoped the Saints would keep him just long enough for Tom Coughlin to clear up the kicker situation in NY. I want to pick up Carney, but his job security is an issue, too.

why would anybody outside of the Grammatica family care about this?
You must have missed the Saints losses to Denver and last MNF against the Vikings. There are a lot of people who care about this. Plus FF wise you have a dome kicker on a high scoring offense. If you are hurting at kicker Melhaff will be a better option than a lot of kickers. He has a pretty strong leg compared to Gramatica, he lost the battle in training camp but that was before all the misses that cost the Saints games.

How do kickers coming in a situation like this usually fare the first week out?
Well the Saints faired well bringing Gramatica in replacing Orlando Mare. That was when Mare couldnt make a kick and when Gramatica had his head right. Kickers can be streaky, the great ones like Morton Anderson excluded. If Melhlaff makes the most of his opportunities you couldnt ask for a better kicking situation.

Also keep in mind that placekicking wasn't really the problem in preseason, it was his kickoffs. He was very inconsistent, and would periodically shank a kickoff out of bounds.

Good to know, thanks Mike

Was being sort of sarcastic - I totally get it. I just don't see how anyone on the Saints is a top 12 kicker right now. Unless you are in a huge league. They either score TD's or turn it over - plus play from behind a lot and forego FG's..

Oddly enough there have been opportunities. Gramatica just blew them. 3 FG attempts monday night and he made 1 of the 3. If he had nailed all 3 plus the extra points on top of that it could have been a decent FF score. If you put a kicker with more range in that position you may be looking at even more opportunities. The Opportunities have been there because the Saints have been stalling on some drives due to penalties etc. So you at the very least need to put this situation on your radar.

The Saints are already #8 in terms of potential kicking points (FGA*3 plus XPA*1). Throw in the fact that Colston and Shockey will be returning in a few weeks -- not to mention the fact that they play in a dome -- and the Saints kicker has serious potential to be in the top-5.

;) (no, seriously)

I had Nugent and Mehlhaff in the 35k contest... once Nuge went down I was kickerless.

This could put me in the money!

bushisdaman: I told ya in the official K thread that Gramatica was worthless, yet you defended him when Mehlhaff was cut. The demotion should not come as a surprise, the truth about Gramatica was revealed (yet again) with his dismal performance. I still maintain that Mehlhaff should've been the one kept all along, and so now he gets his shot. Luckily, I was able to grab him from FA before anyone in my league wisened up.
