Young Pitchers (1 Viewer)

Who are you targeting? Guys you don't have to jump right on that have the potential to be number ones? Guys you can grab in the middle to late rounds. This is usually my strength. I'm a bit out of the loop. I guess they don't have to be young if you suspect a break out.

Mike Minor seems to be getting a lot of love, but still goes fairly late in drafts. As far as late round lottery picks, relievers turned starters Chris Sale and Daniel Bard could be solid.

Shelby Miller and Trevor Bauer should be pretty studly if they stick with the team or when they get called up later in the year.

Not counting guys like Beachy, Leubke, etc.

Masterson is legit and his price doesn't reflect that, Floyd too, lesser degree McCarthy, post hype I like Homer, I like Billingsley + Dempster + Volquez + Slowey as bounce backs. As far as actual young guys I like Sale-Minor-Nicasio-Henderson Alvarez-Teheran-Holland-Medlen-Aroldis-Bard-Feliz-Travis Wood. I think it's too early for Bauer, Jarrod Parker, and Brett Anderson but I like them beyond this year. Digging very deep I like Noesi, Iwakuma, Milone.

Depends if you are talking keeper or redraft

Parker really the only pitching "prospect" likely to be in a rotation.....although Teheran might well fill in with Hudson out for at least a month and if he pitched well enough might stick

Bauer will be up this year and is an outstanding talent with top of the rotation stuff

Of those not likely to be in a rotation opening day but likely to be up this year and VERY good pitchers in the future would be

Danny Hultzen, SEA

Shelby Miller, STL

Drew Smyly, DET

Figuring while you are behind the curve the Matt Moore hype machine has reached your cave - but he is legit.

Also agree with Beachy and Luebke as mentioned earlier

And I do like Bard moving from pen to starter - Chris Sale as well although his road will be bumpier and his support much less

Shelby Miller already mentioned repeatedly - but he'll be legit, maybe not this year but in the near future. Lance Lynn is a decent stash as he is RP, but will likely be serving in an SP role until Carpenter's neck issue is resolved. Another guy I like is Luis Mendoza of the Royals...but his role is yet to be determined.

How soon is too soon for Matt Moore in a keeper league? In a non-keeper league?
Keeper league I think you are going to have draft him right alongside or just after wherever Cain, Gallardo and that tier are going in your league to guarantee you get him. If you wait another round or two, he might be gone. In a non keeper I think he falls down into the Latos, Garza tier but he is hype training is going strong and his spring training is doing nothing to stop it. If you want him, jump a round a head of where you think he will get picked. Otherwise just hope he falls, though he probably won't.

Maybe I just haven't readjusted my perspective from a hitting to pitching-heavy era, but I still think young pitchers tend to be a roller coaster ride. I don't agree with the premise of targeting any one arm and reaching for it. I'd rather work off a list of possibilities and draft the ones that drops the furthest. I'd also stick with guys that have a defined rotation slot on Opening Day. I'd rather take my chances on the waiver wire when a pitcher gets promoted than tie up a bench slot on someone who's in the bullpen or AAA.

what about in a league where cain and gallardo are being kept, and the best pitchers available would be kennedy, romero, hudson, and darvish types. while the best hitters available are bruce or pence. i have the 1st pick (equivalent to a 6th round) and im so tempted to reach for moore

Depends on the keeper rules... If you draft Moore, do you get to keep him, how long etc? If it is a dynasty type league, I might just pull the trigger on Moore if I believed in him that much. He probably won't give you 200 IP this year, I would guess something like 180 IP, 14 wins 3.2 ERA, 180+ Ks is what you are hoping for if you draft him. But don't be surprised if he is 160 IP, 12 wins, 3.5 ERA, young pitchers are a crap shoot.I would probably have a tough time picking him over Bruce. For pitchers, atleast for this year I think Kennedy is a step above him, Romero and Hudson are probably his level in a good scenario. Once again though if you believe in him, pull the trigger because if it is a keeper, in 2-3 years you will be kicking yourself if he turns into Kershaw type pitcher. I took Lawrie in my keeper league which is keeper 4 and took him in the 6th round (equivalent 2nd round pick) just because I would rather be in on the ground floor and don't want a player I believe in not on my team if he breaks out. It is a balancing act between playing for this year and the future. I certainly think Kennedy, Bruce, Pence will provide more value than Moore will this year but if you really like Moore and don't think you can get him next round, then pull the trigger.

Anyone have any info on Brad Peacock? Is it worth a stash for the beginning of the season? Does he have a rotation spot, and if so what is his value, high/low end?

AND YOU SHOULD

I know he has been mentioned on just about every sleeper list this year but Mike Minor is killing it in ST so far. Granted it is only ST but I think he has a streak of something like 14 scoreless IP. He has all but locked up a rotation spot and while he is rising on draftboards, he is still pretty low. If you can grab him as a late round starter I think it is a good risk to take.

Each owner would have taken him in that round had he not gone with that first pick. I missed on Bauer yesterday, but got Shelby in the 28th so thats not a terrible consolation.

Brian Matusz seems to be back with velocity and has been pretty good in spring training so far. Could be worth a flier in the late round grab bag.

There's no reaching for a keeper that they are calling the lefthanded Strasburg (but without the violent delivery). I'm taking him first round in an AL only keeper league. Pujols, Fielder, Darvish then me taking Moore.

Getting roughed up a bit in the spring. Looking more and more like he will start the year in AAA.

I haven't been following him too closely this spring, but I think most Nats fans (myself included) were expecting him to start in AAA this year if he was not traded, and get called up in June or so. He moved up the ranks pretty quickly last year. He was in AA most of the year, and was only in AAA for a couple of months before getting called up in September. He only had a couple of appearances then. So, he could probably use a bit more seasoning at the AAA level.

Hultzen to stash, you're welcome.
For keeper/dynasty I think I prefer Paxton.I'm keeping an eye on Drabek. If he's got his control issues worked out he could be quite a nice value in deep leagues.
Hultzen generally more highly regarded but you can't ignore Paxton's k numbers.Drabek is a real good one.
It's way too early to know for sure about Drabek, but he was absolutely brutal last year, even when he went back to the minors.

Pomeranz and Nicasio are pretty much locks for the Colorado rotation. Poms should be good for 170-180 innings. Nicasio might be unrestricted, although they may be cautious because no one has experience coming back from his injury.

As a Jay fan, I'm taking Henderson Alvarez way before Drabek for now and the future. Good articles today about Alvarez in Toronto Sun and Toronto Star, he's basically the Jays #3 starter already.

Aroldis is starting? I need to start digging deeper...

Drabek just lost it last year, I'll be following him closely to see if he got mentally rehabbed. And Paxton's BB #'s give Hultzen a big leg up imho

I meant he was a good one to mention in this thread. People writing him off or loving a pitcher who has never thrown a major league pitch more have it all wrong IMO, young pitchers are extremely difficult to gauge in their first 200 innings or so. Drabek doesn't have the velocity to be a premium fantasy pitcher but right now he has absolutely brutal control so it doesn't really matter. However, he could easily work out his problems and quickly become a reliable middle of the rotation guy. I don't think he has the upside of a Hultzen but then again Drabek was a top 20 prospect a few years ago himself...things are always changing with young pitchers.

I guess he could be a decent buy since I'm sure you can literally get him for next to nothing, but from a fantasy perspective he doesn't hold much upside for it to be worth it imo. Middling K/9, poor K/BB, poor WHIP. In his best case scenario, I only see Drabek providing above average value in ERA, he'll probably be average to below average in WHIP/K's, and Wins are a crapshoot obviously. As a Jays fan I'm hoping for the best from the kid, but I struggle envisioning him being anything but a bust at this point.

Drabek doesn't have a big league job when the Jays head north, even if McGowan isn't ready to go. He's not rosterable in all but the deepest league. See how his command holds up in Las Vegas (factoring in the PCL) and see if a rotation slot opens up.

Coors is a top 5 hitters park, but there isn't much difference post-humidor from Coors and the other usual suspects - Arlington, Chase, Yankee Stadium, Fenway. Players like Jason Hammel and Jorge De La Rosa have posted decent fantasy seasons in the last 3 years, and when Ubaldo was right he was top 10 caliber. Chacin was major contributor his rookie season, and both Nicasio and Pomeranz have a similar profile. Don't shy away from these guys because of where they pitch.

He has been mentioned in this thread before but what are people's thoughts on Chris Sale? He says he wants to pitch 200 innings but that is not going to happen. I've seen a decent amount of people hyping him and for this reason I ended up trading Aybar for Sale and Scutaro. Pretty minor trade of little consequence but just hoping maybe to hit lightning in a bottle with Sale.

I've owned Sale in dynasty since he was drafted but I wouldn't reach for him this year. He'll probably have to deal with IP and Pitch count limits and the White Sox won't be very good. He has good stuff and a odd delivery so he should provide decent strikeouts but his ratios are anybody's guess. I plan to use him in a spot starter role.

Depends on the league. Standard 5x5 mixed roto with a small IP limit and he could be gold. H2H, roto's with categories like QS, leagues without IP limits, etc. and he might not be. I think he's going to be good. Real good. But in some leagues you could extract similar value from 2 MR's.

Probably not worth drafting but worth keeping an eye on, the Blue Jays are deliberately limiting Drew Hutchison's innings this spring with the idea that he'll have lots of innings left in his arm down the stretch when McGowan reaches his innings limit, or Cecil gets exposed as the soft tossing lefty with so-so command that he is. Hutchison posted great numbers in the minors last year (149 IP, 2.53 ERA, 171 K's vs. 35 BB, only gave up 4 HR's all year across 3 levels). He'll likely jump from AA to the majors, like all Jays pitchers do.

Yes

I got darvish with the 2nd pick in my 16 teamer, keep 20 draft 7 rounds.

Moore went first. Oddly I got Shelby miller with essentially the 55th pick.
