Your Franchise's Ten Greatest Ever Draft Picks! (1 Viewer)

Houston Texans

Andre Johnson

Dominic Davis

DeMeco Ryans

Dunta Robinson

Mario Williams

Jerome Mathis

No Oilers that history is gone to Tennesse :D
I'm kind of on Aaron's side in this argument, although I did include 1st rounders (I dont think any were #1 overall). There are 2 factors for me in determining whether a pick is good or not. Obviously value by round but also who was available when you were picking. Picking Mario Williams over Reggie Bush can in no way be determined a good draft pick. Even if Mario Williams is a good player (IF).
come on man cut me some slack I didnt even have 10 people to put up there.
Here are a few more to consider :hifive: David Carr, 1st overall

Jason Babin 27th overall (after trading 40th, 71st, and 103rd for this pick)

Bennie Joppru 41st overall

Travis Johnson 16th overall

Jabar Gafney 33rd overall

Tony Hollings, 2nd round supplemental

Phillip Buchanon 47th and 73rd overall
not funny
I'm a Texan fan. But when I reflect on what Casserly did, it's amazing they ever win any games.

Patriots - In no particular orderBest picks2000 - Tom Brady QB - 6th round1973 - John Hannah OG - 1st round1975 - Steve Grogan QB - 5th round2001 - Richard Seymour - 1st round1995 - Ty Law CB - 1st round1996 - Tedy Bruschi LB - 3rd round1993 - Troy Brown WR - 8th round1974 - Steve Nelson LB - 2nd round1982 - Andre Tippett LB - 2nd round1995 - Curtis Martin - 3rd round1976 - Michael Haynes - 1st roundWorst picks1983 - Tony Eason QB - 1st round
Your Best Picks list is pretty much flawless. Two franchise QBs drafted in the late rounds, the best guard to ever play the game, one of the most reliable RBs to ever play the game, a few great DBs and other guys who've contributed greatly to some awesome Pats football. One thing I wills say, how can you say Tony Eason was a top worst pick? He had one GREAT year and another very good year, and for a first round QB that isn't awful.
Code:
Tony Eason from 1984 - 1986				 +---------------------------------------+-----------------+				 |			  Passing				  |	 Rushing	 |+----------+-----+---------------------------------------+-----------------+| Year  TM |   G |  Comp   Att   PCT	YD   Y/A  TD INT |  Att  Yards  TD |+----------+-----+---------------------------------------+-----------------+| 1984 nwe |  16 |   259   431  60.1  3228   7.5  23   8 |	40   154   5 || 1985 nwe |  16 |   168   299  56.2  2156   7.2  11  17 |	22	70   1 || 1986 nwe |  15 |   276   448  61.6  3328   7.4  19  10 |	35   170   0 |+----------+-----+---------------------------------------+-----------------+
And his 1985 playoff stats were awesome until they pulled him in the Superbowl

I am a huge Steve Grogan fan, but when you have a QB who was on fire like Tony Eason was that season you cannot pull him. He was NOT a bust, much less a horrible draft pick.

1965: Joe Namath1967: John Elliott1977: Joe Klecko1979: Marty Lyons1979: Mark Gastineau1981: Freeman McNeil1983: Ken O'Brien1991: Mo Lewis1994: Aaron Glenn2000: Chad PenningtonThis is off the top of my head, so it's certainly possible that I'm missing some obvious ones. Players like Keyshawn, Abraham, Ellis, Vilma, Salaam, and Toon were all pretty solid players, too. Chrebet and Green might have made the team, but both were undrafted.
Kyle Clifton (1983) belongs on the list, imo. Maybe Emerson Boozer too, especially since he was a late pick (6th round, 1966). Shame about Don Maynard, a 9th round pick for the Giants, but who played his pro career for the Titans/Jets - he won't make either list.

not bad. i'd scratch MA, Upchurch, and consider some of the following:Tyrone Braxton: 1987 12th round: played for 13 seasons including 3 SB's. Led league in ints in 1996.Steve Atwater: 1989 1st round. played for 11 years, 8x pro-bowl, 6x all-pro. in SBXXXII, he is credited with six solo tackles, one sack, two passes defensed and a forced fumble and many think that Atwater should have been named MVP.Dennis Smith: 1981 1st round. played for 14 years, 6x pro-bowls, 6x all-pro, 3 SB appearances.Tom Jackson: 1973 4th round. played for 14 years. 3x pro-bowl, 2x all-pro. Anchored Orange Crush defense with Gradishar which brought Denver to respectability.
Atwater and Dennis Smith would definitely have made the list if I weren't heavily weighting the round the player got selected in. Basically, in order for me to consider you a "top 10 draft pick" if you went in the first round, you pretty much had to be a Hall of Famer. That was probably a bit too harsh, in retrospect- Atwater and Smith should have been on the list.Tyrone Braxton was a very nice pro, but never really a stud. Tom Jackson, too- I decided that Upchurch's 4 pro bowls outweighed TJ's 3 pro bowls (although I had to consider Jackson, who played more games as a Bronco than anyone other than Captain Comeback himself- plus he almost deserves to make the list based on his "fat man" line, alone).

I will attempt for the New Orleans Saints:

1 - LB Rickey Jackson(Pittsburgh) - 2.23 in 1981 - Played opposite Hugh Green in college, and was the cornerstone for the great Saints defenses of the late 80's early 90's. The best strong-side LB of his era(remember, LT played weak-side).

2 - T Willie Roaf(LA Tech) - 1.08 in 1993 - Would anchor two teams(the other being the KC Chiefs) OL for over a decade. Many Pro Bowl appearances.

3 - QB Archie Manning(Ole Miss) - 2.02 in 1971 - Excellent QB for the Saints who suffered through miserable years with the franchise. Still seen as the face of the Saints over 25+ years after his Saints playing days were done.

4 - K Morten Andersen(Michigan St) - 4.03 in 1982 - One of the most accurate, clutchest kickers to ever play the game.

5 - RB Deuce McCallister(Ole Miss) - 1.23 in 2001 - Surprise pick with the RB Ricky Williams already a Saint, but turned out to be quite a blessing. Tough and durable, and close to the Saints all-time rushing leader.

6 - WR Wes Chandler(Florida) - 1.03 in 1978 - The greatest gamebreaker at WR the New Orleans Saints ever had. Later traded to San Diego to finish his career there.

7 - WR Danny Abramowicz(Xavier) - 17.1 in 1967 - Saints #1 WR for many years and for many years had the longest consecutive game pass catching streak, until some dude name Jerry Rice came along.

8 - Chuck Muncie(California) - 1.03 in 1976 - First break away runner the Saints ever had. Later, joined Wes Chandler in San Diego for their great Charger teams.

9 - RB George Rogers(South Carolina) - 1.01 in 1981 - A battering ram for New Orleans for several years and owning the Saints rushing record until Deuce McAllister came along. However, was picked instead of LT.

10 - WR Eric Martin(LSU) - 7.11 in 1985 - Ultimate possession WR and held Saints all-time leading receptions records until Joe Horn came along.

I excluded picks for 2002 since I feel they are too recent to judge among all time Saints' players.

I think Atwater and Smith both should at least be considered for the HOF - Atwater especially. He had the pro-bowl recognition and the big game moments that will be remembered for ever. It's a crying shame that there is only one Bronco in the HOF, despite the fact that only Dallas has more SB appearances than the Broncos.

I never have. Same franchise, different cities. As long as the NFL recognizes the two franchises as the same with regards to their history and the players that played for them, I will. I grew up loving the Colts in Baltimore and now in Indy. Those that differ need to get over it.

also, Jim Kelly almost didn't play for the Bills. went to the USFL for 2 years and that pick could have wound up being worthless if the USFL didn't collapse.
Yep, thats precisley why I put him waaayyyyy ahead of Reich on a best draftee list for the Bills. Kelly missed two years and Still gave Buffalo a hall of fame career and a bunch of sb appearances. Reich was a good pick but was replacable; Jim Kelly put the K in K-Gun.
Dan Marino was available when the Bills picked Kelly.what if they had Marino and Thurman? maybe they actually could have won a Super Bowl or two.btw, Bills don't get to 1 of those Super Bowls without Reich.also, Jim Kelly had 20 TDs and 28 INTs in the postseason. He certainly had his moments, but I think he's sometimes given too much credit for those Super Bowl appearances. (he also had 2 TDs and 7 INTs in the Super Bowl games with 0 TD passes in 3 of them).
Marino would not have helped them win a SB... and without Kelly they never would have made 4 SBs...

I'll never get over it. It's called "loyalty." I agree to disagree though.

Since this is 10 Greatest Draft picks I must be compelled to add John Elway's name to your list. Great pick, bad management after the selection.

Good one, I really slept on that one. Of course it's a bad taste in every Colt fans mouth to even type the words "John Elway". I will always hate that SOB.

Carolina Panthers

the franchise isn't that old, but here are some i thought of. i'm sure i've left some out, and some might not belong here.

julius peppers

steve smith

moose muhammad

mike minter

mike rucker

will witherspoon

kris jenkins

jordan gross

tyrone poole

thomas davis - he is still progressing

rae carruth (just kidding)

i left off dan morgan, because every year he misses multiple games due to injury. when he is healthy he is great. chris gamble i could have added. i think he has done well. i hope deangelo williams and richard marshall will be added to the list soon. they both showed some nice things with the short time they had on the field last season. drew carter still has time to breakout.

I love Atwater, but I think he's a classic "Hall of Great" player. There were just too many players in his generation who were as good as he was.

Re: Washington I'd definitely find a place for Len Hauss in their top ten.

Hauss was named to the Pro Bowl each year between 1967 and 1972 and started 192 consecutive games between 1964 and 1977. Good value for a 9th round pick. A great center who you never hear much about.

Eason is on there more or less because his teammates hated him. The QB needs to be a leader and hard to be a leader when your HOF guard says you should be wearing a skirt on the field. Also, when you draft a 1st round QB, you expect to get at least a 10 year return on your investment. Eason basically played 4 years.
