I do find it weird if we are at a dinner party or event like that and people aren't wearing shoes. Something odd about being dressed up and then walking around in socks.
This is a non-trivial point. Shoes are part of the ensemble, especially for ladies.

CanadianGuys: how is this handled up north? Shoes are fine indoors as long you aren't in a private home? No concerns about leaving salt and slush on the floor of restaurants, reception halls, other public spaces? Or are people generally prepared and wear overshoes/galoshes a lot?

I mean ... I can't imagine, say, going to a wedding in Toronto and seeing everyone in socks. I assume that is not happening.

Not in public no. Public buildings generally have different flooring than homes and janitorial staffs.

Jesus christ some of you are fickle as hell.

We take our shoes off in the foyer to keep the mess down (2 boys 9 & 6 bring in all sorts of ####), but we don't make anyone take them off when they visit. Do whatever you feel comfortable doing. I'd guess that 90% of our guests will see our shoes piled up front and take their shoes off out of courtesy. If they keep them on, that's fine too.

I think we need a European voice. My British in laws go immediately from shoes to slippers... to the point that they have slippers stashed at the front door of MY house.

And reading through this thread, maybe they have it right

Slippers seemed to be a popular thing on American TV shows, too, back in the '50s and '60s. Makes me think of the dads coming home from work and settling in with the evening paper (Leave it to Beaver, My Three Sons, The Jetsons :) ). The dad from A Christmas Story.

Not sure what happened to the ol' pipe-&-slippers routine.

Wait... it's uncomfortable to NOT wear shoes?
For some people, yes. Not while lying down or sitting or something. But for standing around, or walking? Yes. Lots of people have bad arches, plantar fasciitis, etc.
I have PF, and my wife is a germaphobe. As a result, I have "inside shoes" to wear while standing/walking around in the house.
Don't be afraid to say it.....they are Crocs, aren't they? Added bonus: your germaphobe wife can sanitize them if for some reason you stumbled out into the filthy outdoors in them.

Well, sure, it doesn't happen if you go to the weddings with only selfish and rude guests.

Why don't you just move to Canada!

I mostly just come home and take off the shoes I have been wearing and put on a different pair, then go trouncing around the house. Feels good to get a fresh pair on.
