Your Mount Rushmore of hard rock/metal vocalists (2 Viewers)

My faves in no particular order…

Lanegan….Dark Mark!

Anselmo…..go listen to Cowboys from Hell and get back to me

Peter Steele….The Green Man

Cornell….so great. So unique

Staley, Halford, Ozzy, Vedder, Hetfield all right there for me too
Cool to see Peter Steele on the list!
I’m a pretty big Type O Negative fan. Always loved Peter. Dude was like 6’8”….imposing….big deep voice. Wicked smart, and funny.

Thought of another I overlooked. Scott Weiland….just listened to Interstate Love Song. Tell me you can listen to that without singing along?
I’m a big Type O fan too. Caught them at a bar in FL just as their first single was catching on rock radio. Interesting show. Not much flair, just catchy depressing rock and I was hooked forever.

Weiland was good. Too bad he was a mess like so many other rock stars.

Maynard James Keenan
Serj Tankian
Layne Staley
James Hetfield

Strongly considered Ozzy, Dio, Cornell, and Michael Poulson.
Fantastic call with Serj. He’d certainly make an honorable mention on my list. Just completely forgot about him. Another one that I completely forgot about that would deserve an honorable mention on my list would be Jonathan Davis of Korn. I know the music is not for everybody—but if you want to talk about a unique voice with a very extensive vocal range—he’s up there.

And Serj Tankian is one of the most transcendent frontmen ever in rock n' roll. Transcendent frontmen are a rare jewel when they happen, and Serj definitely happened. His cadences; guttural yells and barks; his melodies; but especially, as in the case of "Aerials," his ascending-yet-hanging Middle Eastern melismas drawn from maqamat Hijaz modal scales** leave the listener with something unique and awe-inspiring. He's within the tradition of the Situationists; a socially conscious Iggy Pop without the self-abuse and glass cuts—the bridge from Perry Farrell's wildly abandoned, drug-addled libertinism of the early nineties to a frontman for the more socially conscious part of the aughts.

Total agreement with the Serj pick

That’s a good list I don’t get the dio love though
I don’t know volbeat
Seriously? Dude was an absolute beast of a vocalist.
He’s talented but I don’t really care for him. Reminds me of Jack Black singing but being serious and not shticky

I don’t care for Bruce Dickinson either though and I think him and Dio have similar sounding vocals at least on the higher stuff

Serj Tankian
Oooooh, this one's making me second guess Vedder as my #4.
Hard to argue with Vedder's chops as a vocalist. I leaned more into the harder bands with my list which had me eliminate Pearl Jam from consideration.
Oh, Vedder's great, and it melds in perfectly with the rest of their sound, even if you can't make out half of his words. Serj is just so unique and even his most bizarre approaches still work.

As an aside, Corey Taylor was the other one that first floated through my head when I posted my original 4. I just don't have nearly as much of him in my library as the other 4.

Dio and Dickinson are like classically trained vocalists singing metal. Technically, they are incredible, but I can see how some may prefer a grittier rougher vocal style.

It’s too high pitched and operatic. I’d rather hear Tom Araya from Slayer. Or Mike Muir in his heyday with his strained whisper style.

As much as I like Maiden now, I don't really connect with Dickinson's voice in a big way. He's a fine singer, but he doesn't have what I call an endearing voice.

Dio was a great singer, but his shrieky style was never my thing; he sings some stuff I like (the first album he did with Sabbath for example), but he wouldn't register on a favorite singers list for me, no matter now deep I had to go.

I realize that many feel differently about both, and that's all good.

Totally get it. And for the record, when I made my list, these weren’t necessarily my favorite vocalists in the genre. Just the ones I thought deserved the nod due to talent/impact, etc.

For a Gen Z take I asked my son and the three he named immediately were Maynard, Halford, and Phil Bozeman from Whitechapel.
Ask him what he thinks of Damonteal Harris from Peeling Flesh
Slam isn’t really my thing but I saw them at Sonic Temple and it was one of the better sets I saw
So I did and he said he was familiar with Peeling Flesh but didn’t have a strong opinion either way on Harris.

He also mentioned that he thought about a fourth choice for a while and is going with Randy Blythe of Lamb of God.
