It's a given that there will be at least one surprise team making the playoffs this year. The above 10 teams seem to have gotten the least amount of playoff pub (in my completely subjective opinion), though the Titans were close, the Vince Young hype ruled them out for me and I've heard some people talk about them making the playoffs anyway.

So which of these 10 do you think can surprise in a positive way this year?

My pick: The Redskins

I think the D will have a huge improvement from last season, which will be the biggest difference in their record this year compared to last. Betts has proven he can be the guy if Portis can't go, and if Portis can go for nearly a whole season the offense could actually be better than average. The offensive line is still a concern, but it should be somewhat better than last year. And Jason Campbell should be an improvement over the unstable qb situation last year, giving the Redskins a guy who can actually throw the ball more than 20 yards for a full season. Santana Moss is already dinged up, and without him the field gets more crowded and longer for the Skins offense, so it will be important that he finds a way to make it through the season and be productive.

I think enough good things happen that the Redskins challenge for and possibly even make a playoff spot. If things completely break right for them they could win their division.

 
I selected the Buccaneers because I don't think they are as bad as they showed last year, I think the Saints are overrated and the Falcons could be in for a rough year. Last year, the Buccaneers lost their QB when Simms lost his spleen and the team couldn't recover from that. With a stable QB situation, they should do a lot better.

:lmao: They'd be my second choice for this. Also their receiver situation looks like it's been moderately upgraded from last year.
 
Tough call between the Bucs and the Texans. Went with the Bucs. More proven QB. Better D. Detroit was a slight consideration but I gotta go:

By the way, I'll just throw out there, since I'm already seeing it show up in the poll, that I think on this board the Texans are incredibly overrated.

Seems like everyone's fallen in love with the unknown Matt Schaub an Jacoby Jones factors and disregarded that their o line is still suspect and their defense and special teams aren't very good at all - i.e FF has warped people's perception of reality with these guys.

You know, I hesitated to vote Houston because I sort of agree...despite having made several "Jacoby has passed sleeper status" posts. Just felt like I had more concrete reason for Texans than others.
 
The Redskins

Washington's defense will be MUCH improved.

Campbell will be a legit NFL QB.

Portis isn't as injured as most believe and even if he was, the 1/2 punch of he and Betts will be good.

 
I believe the Vikings have the most potential of the bunch. If Jackson is effective, this team could actually be pretty tough.

Problem is, I can't think of a bigger "If" in the league right now.Their defense is going to be sick. Greenway looks to me to be a monster.

Sucks to be the Dolphins and the Bills right now - 0 votes. :lol:

I keep hearing the NFC central is the weakest division in the NFL - I have less respect for the AFC east myself.

 
I think it's a pretty good bet that none of the teams on your list will make the playoffs.

The AFC already has 8 good teams:

New England

San Diego

Denver

Indy

Jacksonville

Cincinatti

Pittsburg

Baltimore

So I think your AFC choices are out.

That leaves:

Bucs

Falcons

Redskins

Vikings

Lions

Those are some pretty bad teams so my money is no one on your list makes the playoffs.

If I had to pick one it would be the Redskins. I could see that happening if McNabb goes down and TO implodes the cowboys, leading the way for the 'skins to win the NFC East with a 7-9 record (5-1 in the division).

I wonder about that actually. Any of you gamblor types out there have numbers on this?Also I can see plenty of weaknesses in some of the teams you listed in the AFC, legitimate reasons they won't make the playoffs, particularly Cincy, Baltimore and Jacksonville. You can extend that to Pittsburgh and Denver too depending on how you feel about uncertainty currently surrounding some key elements for them.Nothing's as cut and dry as it seems. Go back to last year's preseason projections for the playoffs.

The thing with the AFC teams I listed is that there are 8 of them. So 2 of them can miss and there's still no room for anyone else. Also, the Jets have and outside chance as well, so they would have tank too.I don't have the odds handy, but based on instinct, I would make a straight up bet that none of those teams will make the playoffs and feel pretty good about it. You'd have to give me at least 3-1 to take the other side.

Good point, I guess if the saints tank, then the bucs have a shot, but I'd say carolina would be more likely.

nm, didn't realize that you were talking about last year. who was favored to win the NFC south last year?
 
I like the Texans and Titans, only problem is they're in the same division along with Indy and Jacksonville.

 
The Texans have a lot of pieces in place to make something happen this year. The team has drafted heavily on D the past fews years so it's about time for results. They've also improved at QB, RB and WR#2. The big question mark is OL, but if it can hold up then the team is in good shape.

I didn't know the NFC Central still existed.My pick is the Falcons. Petrino is a great coach and will get Harrington ready to go. They have lots of talent all over the team and Petrino will use it correctly.

 
Not on the list, but I'm picking the RAMS for the NFC Championship game. I really would pick them for the SB but I don't know if they do much in a potential NFC title tilt in Chicago.

FWIW, there are a lot of Texas based posters on the board.I wouldn't predict the Texans to make the playoff's (it's hard in the AFC anyway, you need to win like 10 games!) but the Texans are consistently underrated by everyone else out there. Just take a look at any of the team rankings (here's a link from earlier this week), they are consistently ranked at the very bottom, 31st, 29th, you pick it.

 
If people agree with most "experts" and are in agreement with the Bills going 3-13, then I say they have the best chance to out perform their expectations, no?

I'd be psyched with 7-9. Give them 1 more year.

It got be the Vikings.

Maybe I have been listen to too much NFL radio but there seems to no expectations for the Vikings. Most prognosticators are predicting the Vikes to be the bottom feeder of the NFC North. No one is expecting anything close to 8 wins. 4-12 is a common prediction. I have heard prediction of around 8-8 by at least one so-called experts for teams like the Texans, Bills and Lions.

You might be right, but you can't draft that much defense and still be horrible. It's also hard to imagine Schaub, Green and Jones being worse than Carr, Dayne and an over the hill Moulds. I think this is the best team they've ever had and they went 7-9 with a weaker 2004 team.
 
I think the Broncos are going to outperform expectations the most. And no, I'm not a fan.

 
Have to go Vikes here...Solid D and great running game. Last I checked the Bears didnt have a great QB and how did they do?

 
I think the Titans & Jags should be on the list and 1 of them would be my choice, but if forced to choose from list it would be TB.

My first thought was Minnesota... and this midseason run... @Chicago, @Dallas, Philly, San Diego, @Green Bay... and finish the season @Denver; it's rough. I think they'll be a very respectable team and if a receiver steps up they're going to be very good.I also like the Raiders to be much much better. Shell was horrible. Kiffin is going to be successful. The defense is nails, like Minnie's, and the offense is going to be very improved. How could it not be?

Ummm....so, let me get this straight.....Cincy, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh all will NOT make the playoffs. I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but they all happen to be in the same division. Unless you are implying that *cough* the Browns are going to make the playoffs, at least one of these teams will have to.

For the past 3 years I've made a nice bit of money betting people that they couldn't name 5 teams that wouldn't make the playoffs. Nobody has ever won the bet against me. Two years ago I asked a bunch of people here to do it: Nobody even got 4 out of 5 correct. I tried to do it last year, but the mods didn't like it and closed the thread. This year I'm doing it over at the Sports Betting forum at twoplustwo, except I'm making it 6 teams just to be sure.In short, I think you guys are out of your minds if you think that nobody on the list of 10 teams will make the playoffs. That's not saying much.The Texans are starting to remind me of Arizona the past few years where everyone keeps saying they are going to surprise and they can just never get their act together.

I completely agree with Andy.Portis will have a Pro Bowl season, Campbell will play a solid first full season in the NFL and the defense will be surprisingly improved, playing to a their level of a few seasons ago.

I also think the Raiders will be one of the surprise teams, but I'm not sure they'll finish above .500, they'll just be surprisingly better -especially on offense- than most people predict.

 
Good start for the Lions, Vikes, Texans and Skins. Not so much for the rest. They all looked pretty good too. Well at least the Lions' offense looked good.

For those naming teams not listed, as I mentioned above all the rest (Packers, Titans, Rams, Cards, etc.) I've heard mentioned in relation to the playoffs, so I didn't include them.
