Zootopia - Newest Disney Film (1 Viewer)

Just saw it with the kids today. Another solid film. Great animation, a lot of pop culture tie ins especially a big one for the godfather.

The message this film seems to be about diversity. While at times it was a bit heavy handed and left my 5 year olds scratching their heads, I felt they handled it well enough that it just avoided lecture status.

Overall solid addition to the Disney library.

I saw it last night with the family and found it very similar to you.

The message was probably too complicated for most young kids but overall it was well done.

They extended the diversity theme to the credits which were interesting to read through as they left absolutely no one out who was even tangentially involved in making the movie.

I agree. It is a solid movie. Not nearly the genius writing of Inside Out, but the dialogue was solid, the message good without being obnoxious and plenty of pop culture and "adult" references that are amusing without being crude (loved the Breaking Bad reference).

Lord that trailer with the sloth is hilarious, the whole audience was laughing when I saw it in the theatre.
Agreed. Saw it with my son. He didn't find it nearly as funny as I did. Seeing as how he is a teenager and would prefer not to even acknowledge my existence, I embarrassed him by laughing. Which, of course, made me laugh all the harder.

saw this tonight with my 7 and 9 yo.  7 year old got pretty scared at the last confrontation scene in the museum, but she's always been a wuss on any full length movie.  I thought it was good for a kids movie.  I don't see animated movies that often, so I'm still astounded at how good some of these movies look.

There was a reference in the movie to a carnival game called Whack-a-Carrot.  Intentional or not, I took this as an easter egg gag for adults.

The critics are really loving this movie.

Rotten Tomatoes is running at 99% right now after 137 reviews.  Very impressive.

The User Ratings are high as well as 96% of the audience liked the movie after 26,000 votes

IMDB is running at an 8.3 after 15k votes.

Zootopia is now Disney's biggest non Pixar revenue opener ever, beating Frozen ($73m vs $67m) for the top spot.

Solid movie. Maybe a little too intricate for my 3yo, but she seemed to enjoy parts of it.

Definitely a solid message that certainly applies to the current goings of the country.

Same with my 7 yo.

My co-worker took his 4 year old daughter to see it yesterday.  Poor kid was up until 1 am having nightmares.  She's a big fraidy-cat though.

Thought it was fantastic.  The world they created for this movie is very deep and well thought out for a Disney flick.

Went with some friends and their 3 year old.  He jumped about 6 inches off his seat during the jump scare scene in the lab.  He otherwise loved it.

The movie is clearly more targeted for the older kid demographic than usual disney films.

Who else saw that awful trailer for the movie where Kevin Spacey turns into a cat and Christopher Walken is in it?  WTF is that?

No, but the graphics in The Jungle Book preview were incredible.

Easily one of the best animated films out there. Way better than inside out and in my top 10 ever. Girlfriend loved it to.

Great movie. 4 year old loved it, but it was pretty loud at times and did make him jump. Probably pushed his attention span at 105 minutes.

My almost-5 year old daughter said it was scary, but has been talking about it non-stop since. My 11 year old and his buddy both loved it. Good *kid movie for adults* as well, several good jokes. Of course I picked the local theater with 2Hearted Ale on tap.

My 4 year old nephew liked it but begrudged the lack of songs. I had not even thought of that. Kind of surprising in hindsight.

The little Godfather scene and the DMV scene were worth the cost of admission for me.  My 9 year old daughter has been channeling Brando ever since.  My wife is not as amused as I am.  But she's a chick. They don't know funny.

Agree. Those two were the best and I also like the scene with Tommy Chong (i.e. the Yax).

Was just thinking last night, has there ever been a more typecast guy in Hollywood that keeps getting roles? "We need a stoner hippee guy. Tommy Chong."

I loved how they had him re-tell the joke. Almost a Norm McDonald level of asking for the audience patience.
dmv scene was heightened for me, as i needed a pee break right then, but decided to watch "one more scene" because i thought there was going to be a twist with the license plate #.

so i shared Hopps's impatience with the sloths

maybe splitting hairs, but i didn't think the message was about diversity, but rather about stereotyping

thought the writers did a great job at raising the ideas, going right up to the edge but not over the edge into agenda and annoyance.

It's an amazing scene.

The sloth is named "Flash", which is awesome.

Flash's reaction to the joke is so slow, you can see the lightbulb go on in his head - fantastic animation there.

And then the joke retelling!  I can barely make it through the non-express checkout at the grocery store, so that was hilarious torture.

Upon further review, I think you're right.

Folks are posting about the heavy-handed or complicated message up thread, but I honestly couldn't recall or even guess at what they are talking about. I asked my 11 year old what he thought the message was and he said, "that you can be anything you want to be". I would say he's right, that's the primary message from this movie. Its a very common, simple cliched message.  This as opposed to Inside Out, which I thought was fun, but the main plot line was far too complex, adult, nuanced for any kid to appreciate.

I don't think people are talking about 11 year olds not understanding.  They are referring more to 5 and 6 years olds.

The writers have stated that the main message they were trying to show was inclusion, diversity and the dangers of fear mongering.

Very few young children are going to understand fear mongering imo.

The message also didn't make a lot of sense because the animals in the movie were of different species. Was it an illegitimate concern that a predator might try and eat one of the small critters?  Doesn't really relate to people of different color or religions which was obviously the point.

But more than anything, the movie wasn't really that funny or interesting and it was very long.

Yes, because predators had evolved.

Yes, because predators had evolved.
So what do they eat now?

Was I the only one that thought when they were doing the Vito Corleone scene that the fox should just eat that little *******? Was that racist speciest of me?

Couple of themes here:

- stereotyping is bad (i.e. anyone can become what they want)

- fearing others because they are different is bad (i.e. no need to cross the street when you see a black person or vote for Trump)

So what do they eat now?

Elephant sized Popsicles.  Did you even watch the movie?

That was the part they didn't mention. They raise unevolved people as livestock.
Now THAT would have been an interesting twist. Like that scene from the matrix with the animals growing babies with a machine to eat.  :X

Yes, because predators had evolved.
Now this really bothers me.

So the takeaway is that people like me that have always been sweet innocents don't have to be afraid of people that aren't like me because they are evolved and are only FORMERLY a bunch of dangerous mindless predators.
