I haven't watched the show, but about 20 years ago I went to a storage auction. Most of the stuff was crap but one unit, a lot of the stuff was labeled "Baseball" (The contents of the lockers where out in the open, but if there were boxes, they were not opened). I was really into baseball cards at the time. They were getting a lot of interest
I spent around 50 bucks for 3 boxes. Though some of the papers I found in the storage, the guy who had the locker used to be a rep for Anheuser Busch but got fired. Two of the boxes were filled with paper, but the third box, jackpot. Lots and lots of St Louis Cardinals swag. Some World series pins, programs and my favorite a duffel bag filled with signed baseballs. Most of them from the 1982 Championship team. But my favorite was a signed ball with Keith Hernandez and Willie Stargell, the co-MVP in 1979.

looked to me like the final ticker was on the retail price. it takes time to move all that stuff. especially the junk.i dont mind if they estimate, but just say it. Im probably just being nitpicky.Makes me want to go to one though.

ETA: auction hunters I think its called, only thing I didnt like about the 2 episodes I saw was they didnt show them getting burned by a bad unit, which Im sure happens.

I like Auction Hunters on Spike better because they focus only on one team and they show them actually selling the goods or have them appraised by a professional, similar in format to Pawn Stars.

Like someone else said only thing i dont like is it makes it appear every unit they get is a jackpot.

I thought the show was 5 out of 10. A little too much chest thumping on the show for my taste. Agree with the sentiment that showing the value at the end tends to weaken the show a bit. Other observations:
The guy with the wife w/tatas seems to be an idiot.
Who would pay $5000 for Suge Night's clothes?
LOL @ putting the little guy on stilts (WTF) and giving him night vision goggles.
This show is silly. Not DVR worthy but worth a watch if other channels are dead. Kind of like Swamp People.

Yeah, it's annoying. I've tried my hand in the past and never got much luck at all. The best I got was a 70 year old ring that was given to an ex Pontiac employee for retirement. There is about 2000 of them but only worth about 450 dollars. Every other time I've fallen very short of breaking even.fruity pebbles said:

Caught a few episodes of this show. I was surprised at how many people turn out for these auctions. They are only following 4 people, but there are like dozens and dozens of other people at these auctions.
Any idea how many storage units are typically auctioned away at one site? Seems like 3 of the 4 people always end up with one unit. I'm guessing they edit out the rest?

I don't think Auction Hunters will show them getting a crappy unit. At the beginning it says something along the lines of "these are the best moments from their auctions". So they are all recreations of things that happened to them, and how they went about selling the stuff.

My grandpa loved garage sales. He'd fly in from Florida and stay with us for at least a month every year. Since he didn't have a car, I can remember him dragging me to all sorts of garage sales. He'd always say "one man's trash is another man's treasure". He was great at buying typewriters, fixing them up and then giving them away to friends.
Personally, I can't stand garage sales and am a minimalist for the most part.
But shows like American Pickers, Pawn Stars and Storage Wars intrigue me for some reason.

Any time there is publicity like this (the show), people pop out of the woodwork to copycat. Going to one of these places now isn't going to end up a winning situation for the everyday guy.
I always thought that the workers at these places would clip the lock and check out the contents beforehand to get a good idea of the worth of the contents or just make off with anything decent. How does the storage company protect against this?

Am I the only one tempted to rent a storage unit for a month, and fill it with banker's boxes full of dirty underwear, old rags, and used up pornography, but write "Gold Bars", "1950s Topps Baseball Cards", "Jewelry", "Elvis Stuff", and "Drug Dealing Profits--100s and 50s" on all the boxes? Then let the lease expire and show up on auction day to watch the fun?

I've been wondering if they have to give back anything that is discovered to be stolen? If not, it seems like this could possibly be a way to fence stolen goods.
Thief steals the stuff, rents a locker, hides the stuff in the locker in bags of old dirty clothes, etc. Doesn't pay the rent and lets the fence know which locker it is. Fence goes in and is able to buy the locker at a cheap price.

Anyone else think that the values of some of the stuff they find is inflated? I mean, those newspapers of Elvis's death could very well had been worth several dollars a piece, but since the market just grew by about 30,000 of them it would seem like his own giant stock would actually drive the price down a bit. Still pretty crazy that a locker full of newspapers could be worth that much.
And sometimes I wonder why the heck the people just stopped paying the rent on their lockers. People that know that they have extremely valuable collectable stuff just stop paying rent on their locker and lose their stuff? Why in the world would the people that owners all of that professional restaurant equipment have stopped paying? Sell one item and it would pay for the unit's storage for another year+. Instead they just let the storage place take and sell off $20k of equipment? Doesn't make any sense to me.
I get it when someone may not know they have something as valuable as what it is or if someone died, but otherwise why not go in before you know you can't pay and grab the valuable stuff to sell at least?
I love the old guy that's the collector though. Guy cracks me up. Bringing in the psychics, the midget with night vision and stilts, forgetting to go to auctions, etc. The guy is a riot.

Caught a couple last night, swear to God, there was one scene where Brandi & her husband were talking, her husband wanted her to take the lead on the bidding while he hid out of sight, and the cameraman just stumbled onto their conversation... didn't have her head in the shot. It was like 8/9 seconds of just bewbs while they talked.
