2024 Detroit Crimson Tide..Roll Lions: Draft day! (32 Viewers)

Looks like Delmas will not be ready for the season opener with his knee issues. Schwartz said yesterday that Delmas in now week to week not day to day.

For all those who said the Lions needed to draft defense instead of another WR..looks like you were right. The Lions secondary was/is the weakest spot on the team and now is even more depleted.

Lets remember that the Lions defense was average until Delmas went down last year, then they were horrible for the rest of the year. I still smell trouble for this team

Not a Lions fan and haven't read any of this. But I did draft their D. How have they looked so far? Any chance they could be good. Domt like that they play the pack twice

As a FFL D, they are rather good, sacks, turnovers big play. however as a NFL D, they will give up alot of points and yards, and cant stop the run or pass.

never herd of him, is he good?
Never heard of him either but Detroit needs some bodies in the secondary. This is a need that should have been addressed in the draft instead of drafting another WR. I really do not care about Broyes upside..with Calvin is was just not a need.

They probably would have drafted Bentley and they got him in the 3rd. The CBs available then were not any better than Bentley. The only reason they are adding a CB is because of the injuries.

According to Redskins media tweets, Redskins corner Kevin Barnes is saying he's been traded to Detroit.
By Jared Smith - Newsdesk ContributorThe Washington Redskins traded backup cornerback Kevin Barnes to the Detroit Lions for an undisclosed draft pick.

Aug 27, 2012 - Cornerback Kevin Barnes has been traded from Washington Redskins to the Detroit Lions, the Washington Examiners' John Keim is reporting. The news comes after many media outlets, including Barnes himself, were informed he was released from the Skins', who in the last hour worked out a deal with the Lions involving an undisclosed draft pick.

The trade sends Barnes to Detroit, which reportedly wants to use the former Maryland Terrapin as possible option at right cornerback. Last season, Barnes (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) was used as a nickel corner and this season was competing for an outside corner back position this season. However, Barnes lost the position battled to seven-year veteran Cedric Griffin.

In three season with Washington, Barnes compiled 45 tackles and three interceptions. Last season, Barnes had 26 tackles and two interceptions.

Jahvid Best was officially put on the PUP list
It is looking more and more like Bests career may be over. If he is not better after 10 months not sure he ever will be better. Plus all the insurance lawsuits going on does not help. Best provided a spark but too many head injuries did him in. Still think Best never fully recovered from head bounce at Cal.

Stafford didn't play well, throwing 3 picks when there really wasn't pressure on him to make him throw. He played well below what he can do but he played well when the game was on the line. I am not concerned about the picks today, he'll improve in that area.

I was most impressed with the defense. With all the turnovers, they really only gave up the 1 Td on a well thrown ball and good catch. They were pretty good against the run, it was an ugly win but a loss would have been disasterous.

They'll have to play a lot better against S.F, mainly Stafford. SF is too balanced of a team to givethem short fields, they'll physically where you down. SF is the team to beat in the NFC, a game like this will show the Lions where they stand in the conference.

49ers a 7 point favorite, sounds about right.
The Niners physically dominated Green Bay. With the Ref missing the blatant GB block in the back on the punt return the game was not as close as the final score.Stafford will be throwing 50+ because I just can`t see the Lions having any success running the ball on the turf in SF.

Lions to work out RBs Steve Slaton and Ryan Grant tommorow.
Odd. Leshoure will be back and Smith is still healthy. Neither are as good as Smith and chances are that Leshoure, unless he's not at all healthy, is better than both as well. This may speak to Leshoure's lack of health.

Unless they are cutting ties with Best, always a possible with medical situations.

Bottom line is that Mayhew has made some questionable Millen type early rd picks the last couple of years. Best was an injury concern coming out of college, RBs like LeShoure are a dime a dozen, Ryan Broyles is coming off a torn ACL. Other than the D line the defense is very suspect and lacks talent and it showed against the 49ers. Yet Mahew continues to draft RBs and WRS early.

Just heard on the radio that Jahvid Best says he is ready to play again.

DET - President calls out QB Matthew Stafford, TE Brandon Pettigrew

Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand pointed to QB Matthew Stafford and TE Brandon Pettigrew when speaking about the team's slow start, and he said both must play better. 'I would say that Matthew, in particular, is capable of playing better,' Lewand said. 'I think he'll be the first to tell you that. We've got a guy like a Brandon Pettigrew, our young tight end, who is capable of playing at a higher level than he's played. He's dropped some passes, including one on Sunday that cost us a touchdown. Those are the kinds of things we have to look at.'

Wow. It's one thing for the coach to call you out. But the team President? Interesting.
I don't get this. I thought the front office was Martin Mayhew (GM) evaluates talent and makes the player personnel decisions; Lewand runs the Salary Cap and admin b.s. Did I miss something? Although he unfairly gets lumped in with He Who Shall Not Be Named, I like Mayhew - he was outstanding when he played for Bobby Bowden and won a SB ring with the Redskins, so there's at least a chance he understands football. I've always thought of Lewand as a wannabe (lawyer who fell into an executive position). What the hell does he know about playing in the NFL?Of course, the irony of this comment is Lewand was making a public appearance at the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business Breakfast of Champions speaker series yesterday morning. The topic: how to build winning organizations.

I went to that suck fest on sunday. What a terrible effort from that team.

How in the hell is the ST coach not fired?

Love jason hanson but they need a kickoff specialist then, no excuses for being indoors and every single kickoff not being a touchback.

:goodposting: Seems to be an easier option than teaching the entire return unit how to tackle.

Tom Lewand should have been fired with Millen. Lewands football background is being a ball boy for one year at Michigan..and he begged for that job. This is what drives me crazy about the Lions. Lewands job was to get Ford Field up and running. All of a sudden he is in the war room drafting with Millen and making football comments because Ford SR. likes him.

This could be a big week for Lions running back Jahvid Best.

Best, who has not played since he suffered a concussion last season in an Oct. 16 loss to the 49ers, will reportedly undergo a battery of tests this week to determine if he can come off the Physically Unable to Perform list next week.

He’s eligible to return to practice following the Lions game in Philadelphia on Sunday, but will need to get clearance from independent doctors to be removed from PUP.

If Best does get his long sought-after clearance, he’d be able to play as early as the team’s Monday night game Oct. 22 at Chicago.

When the Lions put Best on the PUP list before the season, it made him ineligible the first six weeks of the regular season. After Week 6, a 21-day window opens during which he can return to practice while not counting against the 53-man roster. So the earliest a player could begin practicing is Oct. 15 and the latest Nov. 1.

If he starts practicing, a second 21-day window opens at which point he must be activated to the 53-man roster or be ineligible to play for the rest of the year. So the earliest a PUP player could be eligible to play is Week 7. The latest is Week 13.

“Well, that’s within the range of where the doctors wanted him to be,” head coach Jim Schwartz said of the extra six weeks the team bought themselves by placing Best on PUP before the season. “So it made for an easier decision; it’s not an easy decision but it made an easier decision.

“We’ll just wait and see. Like I keep saying, he’s looked extremely good in all his physical stuff and as soon as we can get him back and get clearance we will.”

Best has been in meetings and the locker room and says he’s in the best shape of his life, despite not being able to practice.

The Lions offense has missed Best’s speed out of the backfield and his ability to turn a small gain into a big one.

"Obviously he's a weapon out of the backfield," quarterback Matthew Stafford recently said of Best. "Whether it's man coverage or zone coverage or whatever it is, the guy is really good with the ball in his hands and is really good in any man-to-man matchup as well.

"He's definitely a guy who was a chain-mover for us some on third down last year, being able to check down to him and let him get the first downs."

If Best is cleared this week, expect the Lions to set him loose against the Bears on Monday Night Football. These teams matched up on Monday night last season and Best had a career-high 163 rushing yards and a touchdown.

“I've been off for so long,” Best said in training camp. “I am definitely ready to go."

It is looking like Jahvids Bests career is over. Not a suprise. One full year and he has not been cleared.

The Lions learned Monday that running back Jahvid Best has not been given clearance to return to the practice field from independent neurologists, which leaves both his season and career in jeopardy.

"After today's consultation with medical experts, including representatives from our medical and training staffs, it has been determined that Jahvid will not be permitted to return to play," Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew said in a statement.

It's a shame about Jahvid, but time to move forward.

Missed the game. How much did Delmas play, and how did he look?

Jahvid Best: Doctors don't want to be on the hook for Best

Jahvid Best - RB - DET - Oct. 31 - 9:28 am et

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, doctors that have examined Jahvid Best (concussions) "don't want to be responsible for him."

Best feels great and says he's ready to practice. But doctors and the Lions disagree, raising liability and long-term health concerns. Per Schefter, "some now wonder" if Best has played his last NFL down. He's just 23 years old. Oct. 31 - 9:28 am et

Detroit fans -- I noticed that Detroit is a 3.5 favorite for their game with the Jaguars -- thoughts on how they'll do? Anything to worry about?

Bill Bentley going to IR, Delmas out again. Lions secondary is decimated.

Delmas just can`t stay on the field.

Jahvid Best will not play in 2012. Per. Detroit Lions. Looks like Best is retired as a NFL player

Kid Rock to perform for Lions Thanksgiving halftime show The Detroit Lions and United Way say Michigan native, singer and songwriter Kid Rock will perform during halftime of the Lions’ 73rd Thanksgiving Day Classic ...

Broyles seems to be getting more involved each of the last 3 weeks. He had 6 targets while only being in for 40% of the snaps vs Jax. With Titus not practicing Wed/Thu, one would think he might be in for a decent day against the Vikes.

I was not happy with the Broyles pick..but watching him play he does have great hands.
