GAME NOTES

-- James McCann will make his first major league start behind the plate. He is 0 for 2 in three appearances this season. The Tigers' second-round pick in the 2011 draft, he batted .295 with seven home runs and 54 RBI in 109 games for Toledo this season.

-- Alex Avila said he might return to the lineup on Sunday after passing his concussion tests. He isn't in the starting lineup for the fourth game in a row after getting hit in the head with a foul ball Tuesday in Cleveland.

-- Miguel Cabrera, who has been bothered by a sore ankle, will play first base for the second consecutive game after serving as the designated hitter the previous four games.

-- The Tigers are 11-7 in Interleague play this season. San Francisco is 9-9.

-- The Giants are 8-3 in their past 11 games and have won 11 of their past 16.

-- Outfielder Hunter Pence has hit safely in 17 consecutive games for the Giants.

-- San Francisco is 39-31 on the road this season.

-- Temperatures expected to range from 70-72 degrees with overcast skies. No rain is in the forecast.

Cabrera went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI on Sunday.

He has 100 RBI, reaching the milestone for the 11th consecutive season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Cabrera is only the fifth player in major league history to accomplish this feat, joining Lou Gehrig (13 seasons), Jimmie Foxx (13 seasons), Alex Rodriguez (13 seasons) and Al Simmons (11 seasons).

Cabrera's seven seasons of 100 or more RBI with the Tigers is tied for second in franchise history with Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer and Ty Cobb. Harry Heilmann holds the club record with eight.

Cabrera is batting .500 (15 for 30), with five home runs and nine RBI in eight games in September.

Lobstein scattered four hits and allowed just one run. In 22 2/3 innings with the Tigers, he has yielded only 17 hits and seven earned runs (2.78 ERA).

He was 9-11 with a 4.07 ERA at Toledo.

Miggy is not even using his right foot to plant and drive the ball since his injury. Did you see the slo mo on his HR? His rear plant foot was actually off the ground. Pretty impressive.

Having a hard time justifying Ausmus not lifting for a pinch hitter after Cabrera made it 5-1. He was in obvious pain scoring on VMart's double.

Big day downtown today.

Lobstein is keeping the Tigers in this thing down the stretch. We won all three of his starts (NYY 3-2, Clev. 4-2, SF 6-1). Throw in Kyle Ryan's 6 inning gem in beating the WSox. Why can't the guys making 8-figures a year do that?

It's a great day to be downtown. Jealous of anyone who is going to one or both games today.

Parking will be fun for those just going to the Lions game. Better hope for a fast Tigers game to open up some spaces.
Parking on an afternoon workday + Woodward is torn up for M1 rail project. For me it's been 15 years and 60 games/matches since I drove a car to a sporting event Def don't miss that aspect of living in Oakland/Wayne county.

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Kansas City Royals
Site: Comerica Park in Detroit
Records: Tigers, 78-65 (2nd in AL Central); Royals, 79-62 (1st in AL Central)

Schedule
Monday: RHP Justin Verlander (12-12, 4.80 ERA) vs. RHP Jeremy Guthrie (10-10, 4.31 ERA), 4:08 p.m., FSD, MLB Network
Tuesday: RHP Max Scherzer (15-5, 3.25 ERA) vs. LHP Jason Vargas (11-7, 3.14 ERA), FSD, MLB Network
Wednesday: RHP Rick Porcello (15-10, 3.30 ERA) vs. RHP James Shields (13-7, 3.23 ERA), FSD, ESPN

Scouting the Royals: The Royals continue to get it done with pitching. The Royals earned two shutout wins over the weekend while taking two of three games against the New York Yankees and building upon their lead in the Central Division over the second-place Tigers. The Royals have allowed zero runs or one run in six of their past 11 games. The starting rotation is solid, but the bullpen has been extremely impressive. Wade Davis is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP in 25 appearances since the All-Star break. Kelvin Herrera has been even better. he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP in 21 games since the break. Opposing batters are hitting just .129 against him. Closer Greg Holland is no slouch. He has a 1.25 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP and 17 saves since the All-Star break. The Royals are fourth in the American League in team ERA this season at 3.49 and have a 2.96 ERA since the All-Star break. The offense is a different story. The Royals are third in the American League in batting average (.261) but are tied for ninth in runs scored (569) and 12th in OPS. The Tigers have just 19 games remaining this season, but six of those games are against the Royals, who lead the division by two games. The Tigers would take a one-game lead in the division with a sweep. They would trail by five games if the Royals were to sweep the series.

GAME NOTES

-- Justin Verlander was lit up for seven runs in 6 2/3 innings in his latest start Wednesday. Verlander, who is aiming for career win No. 150, is 5-5 with a 4.42 ERA in 11 starts at home this season.

-- Miguel Cabrera is back at DH today -- a day after a report surfaced that said he will require off-season surgery to fix his bothersome right ankle. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said no decision has been made on whether surgery is needed.

-- For the second consecutive day, Andrew Romine and Don Kelly will start at shortstop and in center field, respectively. Romine and Kelly combined to go 3 for 7 with three stolen bases, a walk and two runs scored on Sunday night.

-- The Tigers remain two games behind the division-leading Kansas City Royals. They also trail the Seattle Mariners by a half game for the second wild card spot in the AL. The Indians trail the Tigers by 3 1/2 games for the wild card slot.

-- Kansas City has won five of six games this month Sunday. The Royals will face the Tigers six times in their final 21 games.

-- The forecast for Detroit calls for sunny skies with temperatures steady near the low 70s. No rain is expected tonight.

Also it had to be said:

Don ####### Kelly! Clutch, always clutch.
Don Kelly is pretty bad at baseball. But I love you, so I will refrain from posting some of his terrible clutch stats.
I bet you would leave out his sac fly vs Oakland in the alds to win the game or his homers vs the Yankees in the alds. Guy plays multi positions well and he comes up big in big games. You could do worse with a super utility guy.

Miggy being Miggy, which is nice.
Yep, this is great. Why he's playing first everyday is still a mystery though. Is vmart really much of a downgrade?
I don`t think it is a downgrade at all. Sat two rows behind the dugout yesterday and watched V-Mart make some great digs out of the dirt. Why again no pinch runner for Miggy late in the game after his hit? And Davis in as a defensive replacement for JD? The fans were screaming at Ausmus.

I think Miggy says he wants to play first and Ausmus says, "Yes sir!" Just my guess. Ausmus has to be discussing this with Miggy.
Right. Curious how this would be playing out if Leyland was the manager. Last year Leyland sat Miggy down periodically.

With Leyland Miggy would probably decide what he wants to do 9/10 out of 10, with Ausmus it's 10/10. No way is Ausmus going to override what Miguel Cabrera wants to do.

Pretty impressive 9th for Nathan. Tough start - b2b infield singles to deep short - followed by a big K on Gordon, picked off the pinch runner, and a. 2nd swinging strikeout to finish it off.

Back in first.

The Tigers are trying for their fourth straight AL Central title, and the hallmark of this run has been their ability to beat their closest competitors in the division head to head. Last year, Detroit went 15-4 against Cleveland and finished one game ahead of the Indians.

The Tigers are 11-4 against the Royals this year, and the race is now in a virtual tie. Detroit has one more win and one more loss than Kansas City - and the Royals still have to finish a suspended game in which they trail Cleveland 4-2 in the 10th.

What

Don't jinx them. The final four games against the Royals are critical. Need at least a 2-2 split. What happened the first 15 games matters nothing as the standings are all tied.

Lotta rain today but they should get this in.

GAME NOTES

-- The forecast for Detroit calls for showers and thunderstorms becoming widely scattered around 7 p.m. A few thunderstorms may contain very heavy rain.

-- Bottom line: There's a strong chance today's game will be delayed, and possibly postponed. If today's game is canceled, a makeup game will likely be played next Thursday as it's the only remaining mutual off day for both teams.

-- Detroit has won three straight to climb into a first-place tie with Kansas City. The Tigers can secure first place alone with a fourth straight win and a series sweep over the Royals tonight.

-- For the third consecutive day, Miguel Cabrera has been tabbed the designated hitter. Victor Martinez will start at first base. It's the seventh time in 10 games that Cabrera has been used as the DH.

-- Andrew Romine will make his fourth consecutive start at shortstop tonight. Don Kelly will make his third start in center field in four games.

-- As expected, the Tigers activated reliever Joakim Soria from the 15-day disabled list. No corresponding move was necessary.
