So, my wife flew down to Florida last week to visit the kids (down there for college). She flew Allegiant which goes direct from our closest airport to about 30 minutes from their apartment complex. Flights are generally cheaper than the bigger carriers, too.
Well, cheaper until:
- She decided to extend her stay by a couple of days; had to pay the difference in fares, so the Thursday flight was a bit more than the original Tuesday flight - about 20% of the original round trip.
- She didn't realize the 6:00 Thursday flight was AM so she was going to have to be at the airport around 4:30AM
- She was fighting a migraine because she forgot to take her glasses and had to sleep in her contacts all week (she's legally blind without them)
- As a result, she messed up on what time she had to leave for the airport and missed her flight
- Since she missed it without rescheduling, she got no credit or refund, and had to buy another one-way ticket to fly home on Saturday, which ended up costing about 80% of the original round trip price.
So all in all, spent twice as much as originally intended. Oh and she was way over the weight limit on her checked bag and got dinged another $50 at the airport. Fortunately a lot of that was stuff she was leaving down there so she'll be OK on that front coming home.
What fun.
