My squad:
QB: Eli Manning (4), Rex Grossman (7)
My thoughts: I'm in the "Eli will continue to progress" camp. Yes, I know about the high numbers of passes thrown by NY last year, but I simply think that is a product of Coughlin utilizing what he has -- a nice set of WR along with a great TE. I don't see much drop off in pass attempts, and any drop off will be offset by Eli's increased efficiency and effectiveness. Grossman is purely backup material; he's obviously an injury risk, so I wish I'd done a little better there.
Grade: B
RB: Shaun Alexander (5), Jamal Lewis (7), TJ Duckett (5), Ladell Betts (8)
My thoughts: Alexander is a total monster, and single-handedly makes this group at least a B in my book. Obviously, the jury is out big-time on Mr. Lewis, but even his downside makes him a reasonable RB2 in a 16 team league like this. Duckett should contribute the occasional touchdown or two. Betts touches the ball regularly and will do in an emergency. I do wish I had some guys who were pass catchers, but that simply isn't how the draft unfolded.
Grade: B+
WR: Randy Moss (3), Derrick Mason (7), Michael Clayton (4), Amani Toomer (4), Troy Williamson (6), Mark Bradley (7)
My thoughts: I really like this group. Moss has injury concerns, but I still see him as an elite WR if healthy. Mason should continue to be solid and grab another 65-75 balls this year. Clayton was hobbled all year long last year and remains a big time talent. Even if he doesn't come back to 2004 form, he should be a viable WR3 this season. Toomer quietly had a decent year last season and is nice depth. Williamsson and Bradley are two guys with lots of upside to round out the mix.
Grade: A-
TE: Heath Miller (4), Daniel Graham (6)
My thoughts: With Randle-El and the Bus out of the picture, I like Miller's chances for improving on 2005. I think he can grab 7-8 TD and put up 550-600 yards receiving, which would make a him a strong starter. Graham is purely a reserve. He shows flashes from time to time, and perhaps he can do so on Miller's off weeks.
Grade: B-
K: Joe Nedney (7), Steven Gostkowski (6)
My thoughts: Not so hot. Nedney is a pretty good kicker stuck on an awful offense, and Gostkowski is a rookie who isn't a lock to get the job, though I think he eventually will. Still, no bye week overlaps.
Grade: D
D: Pittsburgh (4), Kansas City (3)
My thoughts: Love Pittsburgh. KC is a decent bye week fill in.
My grade: B+
OVERALL GRADE: B -- I like my team quite a bit. Fairly good balance, with a superstud in Alexander to guide the way. If Moss returns to previous form, look out.
