Teemu and Jiggy. My two fave players of all time.

2 1/2 hours before Game 7 in NJ when he won the Conn Smythe, I stepped out of the cab from the airport and Jiggy was two feet from me, waiting alone on a bench with his thoughts, waiting for the team bus to arrive. It was like he was there to greet me. So surreal.

Andrew MacDonald 6 years for $30 million extension.

ETA: And now the rumor is that Ghost will stay in school and go the free agent route. So instead of Gostisbehere on an ELC, we get MacDonald on a $5 million cap hit and no Ghost.

Whatever, I predicted 5/25 last week, it's the going rate for dmen. Matt Carle's cap hit is 5.5. Problem as always is we pay for everyone else's average dmen. And is there anything more concrete on your Gostisbehere rumor other than that one sentence he muttered to a reporter? It was an odd statement but I wouldn't be too concerned just yet.

Eta: #GhostWatch2014 RT @slapschotts: Union coach Rick Bennett said he expects Gostisbehere to make a decision today.

I can't tell if Gotisbehere is going to be a difference maker as a pro. He was dominant in the championship game and is a great skater, but he seems really small. Kind of a Ryan Ellis type? He was dominant in junior 4+ years ago and is just now starting to get help out the Predators.

Not thrilled by the MacDonald signing but it's not like the Flyers really had a lot of choices. If Kimmo is gone, they really couldn't let MacDonald get away.

Flyers have an awful lot of money committed to average at best dmen (Schenn, Grossman, Macdonald) Streit not getting younger either.
What's the deal with the Pronger contract? Are they stuck with that cap hit and long-term injury relief each year since he was older than 35 at the time of the signing?

Looking at their contracts, I see Coburn, Schenn. and Grossman all have 2 years left on their deals. So, those 3 plus Streit and MacDonald are pretty much the core for the next 2 years I guess. A top-4 of Streit, Coburn, Schenn, and MacDonald doesn't seem awful but they'll probably miss Timonen's offense and could use a player like Gotisbehere in the lineup.

AFAIK, yes. And LTIR is the best they can hope for. Waiting for the league office to bring the hammer and force Pronger to announce retirement which would totally hose their cap situation.

Yeah Pronger is just gonna be on LTIR forever. Earlier this year, Homer said he is never playing again which wasn't news to anyone but some were concerned they'd make him retire. The core isn't terrible but it's pretty overpaid for an average core. I wanted them to make a run at a top D man this offseason and expectations seem to be that the Flyers are going to move a young center.

Yea Pronger is on the books/LTIR til the contract runs out.

Kimmo isn't 100% on retiring, but It's more likely he won't return.

And it wouldn't shock me if one if Haag or Gostisbehere makes the squad next season. Morin too has an outside chance if he impresses during training camp.

No worries Sport:

Rud, have your popcorn ready for the draft lottery?
http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=714502

I just ran that 5 times and the Sabres didn't win any of them. Not optimistic but not sure 1st vs 2nd makes a huge difference this year.

More interested to see what the Islanders decide to do with their 1st pick.
Lots of different opinions on who #1 is. Central Scouting has Sam Bennett, ISS has Sam Reinhart, and consensus most of the year was Aaron Ekblad.

Full ISS rankings here

Randy Carlyle used his (hopefully last) end of season press conference to dump on Jake Gardiner one last time. What a knob.
he was one of their best players down the stretch.

Shanny going to clean house with the coaching staff?
I hope so. Gardiner was the Leafs best possession player all season, 14 pts in 20 games down the stretch like you say (when most of the team had quit). It makes no sense.. Carlyle needs to be gone. He similarly threw James Reimer under the bus about 20 games ago (when the slide began), seems like he's completely lost the room.

this website is the best, btw:

pretty interesting that Mark Giordano finished the year ranked #1 overall in relative Corsi %. Flames Corsi % with him on the ice was 10 points higher than their percentage with him off the ice.Even more impressive when you consider his zone starts were 43% offense/57% defense. He also logged 56% of the short-handed minutes.

Parise and M.Koivu both in the top-4 also impressive.

J.Jokinen in the top-5? Pens got him for nothing.

Phaneuf was pretty awful

Gardiner, Kadri, Rielly top 3 aka Carlyle's whipping boys.Grabovski, Liles and MacArthur have all been strong possession players throughout their careers as well - Carlyle demoted Liles, scratched MacArthur in the playoffs and had Nonis buy out Grabovski.

Meanwhile, he loves his Fraser, Ranger, Gleason types.

Bob McKenzie (who is usually as reliable as they come) just said Calgary could have gotten Tatar AND Nyquist for Bouwmeester last season and Feaster said no.

That's an understatement. Mckenzie might be the biggest nhl insider.

Florida wins draft lottery

TSN's top 12 for the draft:

1. Ekblad

2. Reinhart

3. Bennett

4. Draisaitl

5. Dal Colle

6. Ritchie

7. Ehlers

8. Virtanen

9. Kapanen

10. Fleury

11. Perlini

12. Nylander

The way the OHL playoffs went, plus the fact that they're all in the Eastern Conference, I've seen a ton of Bennett, Dal Colle and Ritchie and a fair bit of Ekblad and Perlini as well, so I'm really curious to see how this year shakes out.

Slim pickings on Defense - have to think that makes Ekblad valuable in this draft - and Florida needs Defense.
