The National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has made its annual addition of 25 films to be preserved for their position as American cultural touchstones. This year, the Film Registry honored the work of the late Leslie Nielsen with Airplane!, and the late Blake Edwards with The Pink Panther. They've also gone heavy on 1970s films, choosing seminal films All the President's Men, The Exorcist, Grey Gardens, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and Saturday Night Fever. The program started in 1989 and now has 550 films. Here's the 2010 list:

Airplane! (1980)

All the President's Men (1976)

The Bargain (1914)

Cry of Jazz (1959)

Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB (1967)

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The Exorcist (1973)

The Front Page (1931)

Grey Gardens (1976)

I Am Joaquin (1969)

It's a Gift (1934)

Let There Be Light (1946)

Lonesome (1928)

Make Way for Tomorrow (1937)

Malcolm X (1992)

McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971)

Newark Athlete (1891)

Our Lady of the Sphere (1969)

The Pink Panther (1964)

Preservation of the Sign Language (1913)

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Study of a River (1996)

Tarantella (1940)

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945)

A Trip Down Market Street (1906)

The Horseman

I typically love action revenge movies, but this one was just a little too much for me. Possibly the most violent movie I've ever seen. Sledgehammers to legs, hammers to head, burning alive, about 15 throats being slit, it's pretty much got it all. If you like the genre, worth checking out, but make sure you have a strong stomach.

3/5

Fantastic Mr. Fox....Solid, interesting/entertaining to watch. More of an adult movie that looks like a kids movie before you start watching. If you havent seen it, worth watching...7.2/10

District 9...Really liked it despite numerous flaws and a couple sequences that felt so amateur they were humorous moreso than bad. I cant decide if the lead guy was really good or really bad, but either way he pulled off the character/role very well. Definitely give it credit for originality and style, cool effects and sweet weapons. My complaints in the spoilers bothered me after it was over and still do to the point where I cant give it much over a 7.....7.3/10

Alright, so clearly the prawns are intelligent since the main one seemed to be a PhD chemist or something and was good with computers. So why then:

1) Were all the other prawns portrayed basically as bums with no idea what to do besides scavenge for food?

2) They have all these high tech weapons. Since the humans have basically imprisoned them, why dont they use them to fight back? free themselves? get some tasty eats? And when they first discovered the malnourished prawns and got them off their ship, why didnt they just take all of their weapons in the first place?

3) Main prawn owes Wikus nothing. Why then does even after Wikus tries to escape while leaving him behind does he still want to help him? This bothered me the most.

The Kids are Alright:

Don't get the praise for this one. Shows a lesbian couple with 2 kids coping with the children wanting to find out about their biological father. Problem is, it shows them coping with their problems in predictable and cliche ways - in the process making them entirely uninteresting. To me it was the definition of an average movie. 5/10

Will you knock it off? Someone else here just talked me into seeing this movie

I haven't seen it yet but what I know about it has me leaning towards KPs stance and just avoiding it altogether.

I'll still give it a shot once it shows up on demand.

Iron Man 2 - other than some great Scarlett shots, and an awesome test for my subwoofer, this was really, really, really stupid. like Transformers 2 level stupid.

Nanny McPhee Returns

You know, it's really tough to find good, clean family movies that aren't insultingly stupid. This one was actually really enjoyable.

Bullitt - 5/10

Just another pre-blockbuster era police drama snoozefest. With far too little Jacqueline Bissett.

The car chase was pretty cool.

We were actually considering between this and The Town (I won the consideration, based on the positive reviews in here). I didn't see the first one, but my really enjoyed it (on a plane).

Easy A

This chick is able to pull off one of those classic 80's John Cusack roles with the lead here. Probably the most enjoyable high school comedy since Mean Girls. Has it really been that long? Good stuff if you're a sucker for 80's teen movies.

Blind Side

Great story, I'm just not buying the intentions of it all. Pretty much everything you would expect from this type of Hollywood movie.

What the parents did was a great thing for that kid, but I don't know if they would have done it if he wasn't the athlete he was.I don't want to come to any conclusions, but the story reaked of manipulation.
:) So it was somehow mutually beneficial. Hard to find anyone doing things out of pure altruism.

One man's manipulation is another man's charity, I guess.

My problem with the movie was 2 scenes - the one where Sandra Bullock smarted off to the coach on how to motivate Oher and when she threatened the gang banger with her "gun". Those were both so bad,the movie lost any believability it had. :)

Oh there were definitely parts, like the ones you mentioned, that were ####ty. I just happened to think it was better than I anticipated. I really thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was.

I'd be interested to know if that was artistic license, or if it actually happened (or at least close).

Equilibrium

Caught it last night on Syfi. Too many 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Brazil references to make it enjoyable. Not very original. I guess the acting was ok. The set design was tolerable. It just didn't all seem to come together. I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I'm a pushover for a post-apocalyptic authoritarian flick. This one just didn't do it for me. Perhaps if I wasn't under the weather and so tired I'd enjoy it more. I may have to watch it again.

Agreed. Has one iconic scene (Christian Bale just shooting the hell out of one place) you can watch elsewhere, but otherwise kind of boring.

I liked it. I wish it would have had a bigger budget and toned down the over-the-top totalitarianism (same problem as V For Vendetta), but for what it was it's a fun B-movie.

The Binding Agreement would have been a more appropriate title.

Right.

My list is long and distinguished, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

Aside from the famous car chase, I found this movie to be very overrated.

Probably what you expect when you see the previews, just falls into lesbian stereotypes fairly easily:

Of course when they start having problems, one of them will be into penis. I guess what makes it worse is that you have 0 backstory about them, so you don't know if they were always gay or not. Just seemed too cliche. Also found it silly that the sex scenes b/t the lesbian couple were hidden and akward, but the straight sex was in your face.

As a side bar to your spoiler I saw an interesting documentary called This Film Is Not Yet Rated that makes an interesting case that depictions of female sexual pleasure (e.g. orgasms) draw greater scrutiny from the MPAA and lead to more frequent application of the NC-17 or R ratings leading film makers to tone down such depictions to get the more family friendly PG-13.The Kids Are All Right already has an R rating so it may not apply here unless they were threatened with an NC-17 if they didn't edit the scenes in question. I am not saying that is the case, just that it's a possibility.

Good movie, and I can see that. The main scene with them is one of them under the covers while the other has a bored look on her face. (you see more of the gay male porn they were watching than you do of them for some reason).

Well that answers #1 but not really #2...I guess there is no real answer for #3, but.....

True Grit

Tremendous movie. Outstanding. The best move I saw in 2010, with Inception a close second. While I liked Inception a lot, I think True Grit was a bit better.

All aspects of production are well crafted, but the star here is the writing. The only apt comparison I could muster was Deadwood. The writing in both productions is poetry - a mastery of language you don't hear in a lot of movies. "I have been abandoned to a congress of louts." That's ####ing brilliant.

A+. The Coens continue atop their field.

The Audition

There, I finally watched it. Starts off slow........slow.........boobs........boring.......dinner........boring........m

inor foreshadow........boring.......boring........hint of sex w/ no sex........boring............background.........boring........don't know what's happening..........WTF???????.........911.

That's pretty much all I have to say about that. I watched it and won't watch it again. 1/5

Moon

I dig science fiction. This was right down my alley. Strong sense of loneliness. Well developed. Good twist in the end. Nicely wrapped up in the end. I liked the differences in the two main characters and how they handled adversity. Well done.

I definitely recommend it. Mrs TRF is not a big scifi fan, but she enjoyed it. 4/5

Watched the latest Twilight, Eclipse I think it is. What a steaming pile. Doubted they could make this one worse than the last but they sure gave it the old college try. I could punch my wife in the face for getting us involved in these flicks.

For the second time in a month, I've turned on the TV and found St. Elmo's Fire on, and I haven't turned it off. :bag:

The Orphanage

I am about 3/4 through this movie, and it's scaring the #### out of me.

Love it. I think The Orphanage is so outstanding, it's a microcosm for everything that is bad about most modern horror movies. The Orphanage plays on similar themes we've seen over the last 10 years (ghosts, etc.). But unlike most modern horror, it takes time to build characters we care about. And most importantly, gore isn't used in lieu of real terror.

Outstanding movie. Can't wait to finish it.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's the best horror movie of the 00s.
