This is the only new-to-me song of today. It sounds very '80s to me. Not only in keys/synth sound (and sax solo!), but in the spacing of the beat, if that makes any sense. It "breathes" the same way that a Tears for Fears or Cutting Crew song does. So it comes off a little nostalgic to this middle-aged dummy.
There were a lot of 00s music that I thought might get picked but didn't. That is probably a demographic thing. I guess I was supposed to represent the aughts better and failed.
"Cliff Richard was born Harry Rodger Webb on 14 October 1940 at King George's Hospital (now KGMU Hospital), Victoria Street, in Lucknow, which was then part of British India."
The non-Brit/non-US countdown is going to be epic.

I was going to put today's playlist on for the drive, but it was only supposed to be an hour trip, and I wanted to hear more than just Pip's selection.
All I've made time for today is Echoes and Dogs. I moved into my new house. It's far from finished but there's a nice master bedroom and a reasonable kitchen. The rest of it is a construction site. I call it my workshop. Today I worked to Karajan's 1963 Beethoven cycle - 5 and half hours of genius (both composer and conductor).
I was pleased to see others join me with Pink Floyd atop their lists. I chose 2. I wish I chose 3. It would have put them above The Who, whom like Zep, I avoid these days. Robert and Roger have yelled at me enough. I'm old. My 3rd Floyd probably would have rolled some eyes, Another Brick in the Wall. Listening to the album version atm. It's such a killer. All those children singing leave them alone.
Pip's reasoning for Dogs is why I listened to it vs. Echoes this morning. For me Echoes is better musically, Dogs far better lyrically. I was calling it a tie cuz I suck at ranking art. But the kid came in and interrrupted Echoes. It needs a commercial break so she was welcomed. She said she hadn't heard me play it in ages, and it would have been her Floyd had she made a list. So the following is why I prefer it.
I asked if she remembered when I first played it for her. She did better than I did. She was 5. I turned the lights down and put Pompei on the wide screen. She says it blew her away. All she was listening to was too much Hannah Montana. It opened her mind. I cultured her (her words not mine). She spent a week trying to imitate Gilmour's whale sounds on her keyboard (she was six months into piano lessons). She says it started her musical journey. If she made a list it probably would have been her #1 too, but some Bowie from The Labrynth may have got the spot. She watched it dozens of times and called David her babysitter.
So we finished listening to Echoes, and she asked why Gilmour and Wright didn't harmonize more. Good question. They're very good together. I mumbled something about Roger not liking Richard, and we both went to work.
For me the takeaway from this thing is realizing how much distance Floyd has on whoever may be my second favorite band. I never called them my favorite until laboring over picking a song or two for this.
Anyway, thanks a billion Krista and a million to the others who make this work. And thanks to all who played along. Hope we do it again for the catch all.
Surprises for me:
- I am pleasantly surprised that In The Light was chosen multiple times. But I own it own it now, losers!!!
- The love for Paint It Black. Not that I dislike the song, but I figured the Stones picks would be even more spread out.
- The Valerie song. I still don't think it sounds familiar, even after the dozen times I listened to it when it was picked.
- I really liked "All the Young Dudes" as a dark horse for a top 10 pick. I'm pretty sure it didn't even come close.
And not nearly enough Traffic picked here. Which means you all need to listen more.
Thank you Krista! And of course to everyone who helped and participated.
"Chap" is actually my friend's real last name - he's polish not British though (think it was actually spelled "Csap" at sometime during his family history).

It is. All kinds of great stuff, and playlists will be all over the place.
This was a great thread. I got a little busy towards the end, but tried to stay involved and listening. Great new-to-me stuff, some forgotten favorties, etc.
Speaking of a forgotten UK favorite, I just heard this the other day. You folks around in the early 80's will probably recognize it.
I was happy to see the ELO love too. They have long been one of my favorite bands. I've seen their current incarnation 3x since 2014, and they were all really good shows, with enthusiastic, singing crowds.
Busy at work this week, so lot of catching up to do.
My top 15 from the 31 point round, excluding my own selection:
Chap : While My Guitar Gently Weeps – The Beatles -- my #1 song in the most recent Beatles countdown and #5 song in this countdown
falguy : Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

AAABatteries, krista4 : In My Life - The Beatles -- my #3 song in the most recent Beatles countdown
Yankee23Fan : Let It Be – The Beatles -- my #5 song in the most recent Beatles countdown

Andy Dufresne : Rebel Yell - Billy Idol
Surprisingly, this round wasn't nearly as good as the previous round for my taste, and I think there were a number of other better rounds (again, for my taste). Still very good, though.
Duffy's breakthrough came in the same year as Adele's 19.
If you had asked me which one would be a megastar 15 years later, I probably would have gone with Duffy because she was more of a conventional beauty. Fame can be a funny thing.
Hindered by only their first four albums (and their reunion album) being eligible. But the others are eligible in the catch-all countdown, so we're not done with them.
I limited myself to one song per artist. If not, my list would have been dominated by Zep, Stones, Pink Floyd, and the Who, and perhaps that would not have been as interesting.
I believe I was the only one to select two artists -- Aqualung and World Party. I guess that is an indicator as to why I finished high on the 'chalky' list.

I took "Livin' Thing" because of a family tie in I explained earlier, but I almost took this instead (which I'm surprised no one did - my fault I guess):
@Hawks64@krista4 FYI Doc Oc's idiot who took a Who song picked Baba O'Riley, not Gettin' in Tune -- though it's nice to hear the latter since it wasn't picked and Baba was a squillion times.
This was really enjoyable! I know how much time I spent just keeping up when I could, which means all of those running this had to invest a lot more time and effort. Thank you!!!
I had fun today. I got fitted for a crown, and the sadistic basterds played both kinds of music- Country and Western. Aside from one Alan Jackson tune and Sweet Home Alabama, it was all drawling guys trying to get girls in the sack. Who breeds with these creepers?
It did make me really appreciate just how good Dolly Parton is at song writing.
I just hope Squibby is having a better time of it.
Since he was a double winner, Pip has kindly agreed to have his portion of the ***OFFICIAL*** contest winnings go to a charity of Eephus's choice given that Eephus lost the tiebreaker by only six points. @Eephus , @Just Win Baby , and @Pip's Invitation , please let us know your designated charities.
I would like any donation for me to go to the Pain News Network. For those who don't know, my wife has been disabled since 1998 and suffers from very severe chronic pain. I have posted a lot about this over the years in other threads on relevant subjects. This is not a post intended to solicit sympathy, just explaining why this would be my charity. Thank you to everyone involved in these charity contests!
I like a lot of country music, but this crap was very bad. It was all "i'm the man and I'll look after you just lie back and we'll take our time" bullhockey. It was objectionable.
