I watched one of KP’s movies that I hadn’t even heard of last night: The Stepfather. While it’s not exactly a high quality production, it’s a very good thriller. It kept me entertained the whole time and the stepfather was a great villain. Was part Hitchcock Shadow of a Doubt and part 80s horror.

As it seems like the next 100 is going to be pretty light on foreign films, a couple that did not make the cut here that I liked were some of the later Fellini’s. Not as good as his peak stuff, but “And the Ship Sails On” is pretty good. Has a bit of Rules of the Games vibes to it, set around the beginning of World War I. Probably Fellini’s best movie post-Amarcord. His “Intervista” probably would not have made my top 100 either, but would end up somewhere just outside it (but probably requires a lot of familiarity with his earlier movies).

I agree, though I may be biased by watching Moore's Bonds first. To me, Bond should be suave, sophisticated, charming and witty in addition to being capable of great action. I will never argue the point against a Connery supporter - it's just what I prefer. If you try to tell me Craig > Moore, THEN we'll have an argument.

I mean look at Dr. No, the first bond movie. Just not good. Now From Russia with Love is one of my favorites. Goldfinger great, Thunderball ok, Diamonds are Forever very good.

Glad you liked it. I think I said as much, but definitely more thriller than horror. I just found the Stepfather to be quite effective and the chilling "who am I here?" hit me. I am pretty sure the Pure Cinema Podcast was the one that was pimping it on one of the episodes. If not them it was a podcast I was listening to right be for my 31 horror in October run.

Yes, that last part. The list was MY desert island movies, but it doesn't mean that I would recommend my top 10 to everybody. For example, there is 0 chance I would tell anybody to watch Blue Velvet unless I knew them, their tastes in movies, and thought they watched and enjoyed similar. That is a tough watch for me, but sometimes I want that.

EVERY time a customer at the video store would ask for a recommendation out of the blue, I would ask them what they have watched and liked recently. I need way more information to know if I am recommending Tucker and Dale, Matyrs, Blue Valentine, Supertroopers, or.. you get the idea. All those movies I love, but they all aren't for everybody.

To Live and Die in LA- police thriller

They all have either comedy or action. Aren’t artsy or foreign.

I think any of those would be decent of the few I've seen and my gut reaction to your list was to suggest:

The Stepfather - good 80s thiller/horror
Blow Out or River's Edge - both also give you the ability to dip your toe in some borderline artsy stuff, but not wade in.

Combing the two, I would say start with Thief, The Verdict, and The Stepfather. Then 2 of: Blow Out, River's Edge, and the other 4 on 80s' list.

I watched one of KP’s movies that I hadn’t even heard of last night: The Stepfather. While it’s not exactly a high quality production, it’s a very good thriller. It kept me entertained the whole time and the stepfather was a great villain. Was part Hitchcock Shadow of a Doubt and part 80s horror.

@KarmaPolice you might have missed this post. Where did you find out about this movie?

Glad you liked it. I think I said as much, but definitely more thriller than horror. I just found the Stepfather to be quite effective and the chilling "who am I here?" hit me. I am pretty sure the Pure Cinema Podcast was the one that was pimping it on one of the episodes. If not them it was a podcast I was listening to right be for my 31 horror in October run.

Now you gotta watch the first couple sequels

Id still like a consensus top 5 from @Ilov80s and @KarmaPolice on what I should watch for the ones I havnt seen.

I would think it is the highest 5 movies in the ranking that you haven't seen.

No, I'd guess there are others that will have a better shot at being enjoyed than something like Wings of Desire.

@JAA - did you post a list of the ones you haven't seen?

But I thought the list was a "desert island" list of your favorite movies so they would be in order of the movies you would recommend most? I am not trying to be difficult but just understand. I guess the distinction could be you are trying to recommend movies based on what you have gathered about JAA's movie preferences rather than your own.

Yes, that last part. The list was MY desert island movies, but it doesn't mean that I would recommend my top 10 to everybody. For example, there is 0 chance I would tell anybody to watch Blue Velvet unless I knew them, their tastes in movies, and thought they watched and enjoyed similar. That is a tough watch for me, but sometimes I want that.

I need way more information to know if I am recommending Tucker and Dale, Matyrs, Blue Valentine, Supertroopers, or.. you get the idea. All those movies I love, but they all aren't for everybody.

#68: TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.

80s' #38 movie. I've not seen this one and will see if the library has a copy as it doesn't look like it can be streamed.

This is a great film. It seems a little low budget production quality wise some times, but I like to think that was intentional to give it a grittier feel. A great car chase scene, which probably loses impact today due to cgi oversaturation. I think it's got one of the best climax / denouement pairings in a film ever. Like, to this day it seems people aren't allowed to end a film like this one does.

That was one of mine as well. If the crew was a little younger, I think I went with something more like The Others for a thriller.

I wish I could remember more. I feel like I had 3-4 core ones from each genre that we had which was underseen enough and had a high hit rate for people to recommend all the time.

That's a possibility for this year's 31 in 31. Last year I did a short series that I mostly not gotten to (I think The Omens?), and I had a blast with that. I think that will become a common thing each year going forward too.

I still think my favorite memory was the time I asked a guy for ID (blockbuster was always cracking down on that) and the guy asked me if I’d accept a naked picture of his girlfriend instead. I shrugged and said sure, turns out he wasn’t bluffing and flashed his wallet to me. I accepted it and let him rent. Oh and she was standing right there. Not the hottest couple by any means but it at least broke up the monotony
