1) Straight cost per fantasy point is not a useful metric, as you'll probably figure out once you try to use it. It's not a linear relationship - cost per point would imply, for example. that Drew Lock for $4 is wayyyyy more valuable than Josh Allen for $25 or something. You can derive some relative value metrics but straight points per dollar isn't it.

7) The general guidelines I've historically used as a starting point for budget are roughly in line with yours. $25-30 for QB, $12-18 for K and D, $80-90 for RB, $90-100 for WR, whatever's left on TE. I start there and then tweak 1,000x as necessary up until the deadline.

Good stuff.

To point 1, I would add that cost per point (or incremental points per incremental cost versus a baseline) IS useful when restricting your focus to starter values within and across positions (excluding kickers and defense). But it's just a tool to help focus one's thoughts.

To point 7, I was going to argue that your "whatever's left on TE" approach is flawed given TE favorable scoring, but the reality is that outside a few elite tight ends, TE14 might be just as likely to finish in the top five as TE4. Same rule applies...computations are not the be all / end all, but they can help when sifting through volumes of data...you just have to be honest with yourself when assessing what the math is telling you.

It was my understanding....
Please show us your roster and oh god would I love to see Brian Robinson on it lol
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Robinson is undervalued. I'm confident he can produce like a $14 player but not sure he can produce like a $20 player. I'd guess the odds are 50/50 as to whether or not my final roster has him....which is probably more positive than my first few comments on the player.

Thanks for the comments. It feels like the sweet spot is loading up on what would be, in a regular draft, QB2, RB2, WR3 type players.

Also @Ignoratio Elenchi thanks for your thoughts, appreciate the insight. Although I am curious as to what points 4 and 6 were! ;)
@SeniorVBDStudent a "like" for Chevy Chase reference.

@Joe Bryant do staffers still put in their own entries? (I thought you had in the past but you just couldn't win any money). Can you share yours? :P

For sure, the staffers are not eligible to win. I forget how we'd done it in the past with @Contest Turk parsing them out so as not to affect cut lines too. I'll ask.

@Ignoratio Elenchi Thank you for your feedback.

I was using the Cost per Point model to see what spots looked good when passed on a Blue Chip. For instance with Kelce at $30 you could grab Goedert and Ertz at $15 each. Yes, they have better CpFP (Cost per Fantasy Point) than Kelce. But, what about volume and consistency? Also, 6 pt TDs are making me lose my mind on some of these guys.

For me, it's a starting point to see how salaries impact production.

No $2 players this year, like 2019 but unlike most years.

2019 actually had even tighter pricing than this year, with no $3 players except at kicker & defense.

Nice Roster, a bit blasphemous to have a kicker over $3 even though I like the angle there.....lol!
I know. I felt like a sellout selecting a K over $3, after all the yapping I do.

One thing: The Chargers go for it all the time and leave their kicker on the sidelines depending on analytics and EPA. He's not a sure thing. I think as we move more towards going for two that the easy XPs are even not so sure anymore. It's like Baltimore and Tucker.

That's a great point. My real submission will only have $3 kickers on it, but I will surely see which teams go for it on 4th down, or go for the 2pt conversion. Thanx!

On average that's 4 players per year: 2.3 RBs, 1.3 WRs, and 0.4 others. Usually cheap to mid-range guys who moved their way up the depth chart after the pricing was set. With mixed results, e.g. Kareem Hunt had a huge year in 2017 after Spencer Ware got hurt, while Gus Edwards joined JK Dobbins on IR before the 2021 season started and missed the whole season.

In 2019 there were smaller-than-usual rosters, with about one player less than usual. The average roster size was 20.3; in all the others years since 2015 it has been between 21 and 22. This shrinking happened at nearly every position: 5 of the 6 positions had their smallest size for the 2015-21 period in 2019; the one exception is RB.

This year, those 2 RBs are Robinson and Pierce. The WR is Pickens. the QBs are Carr/Cousins.
I currently have all 5 rostered and they’ve all been locked into my entry for a week+.

Robinson and pierce for sure. Not sure carr and cousins will be that high.
I think Pierce may break some records of ownership this year. Though I bet he still somehow doesn't break 70% ownership. Hmmm.

Interesting Julio was SO expensive yet rostered such a high percentage. What happened that year? Was there an injury or was he just underpriced?

Great Quality but very thin roster, If everything falls right this will be a tough team to beat down the stretch, but will you be able to survive an injury or 2/bad performance? You got Cajones, I'll give you that brother!

Normally I would definitely have a 5th RB, but with Pierce and Robinson as RB3 and RB4, I'm wondering if that mitigates some of the risk

Possibly but your putting alot of faith in 2 players than haven't played a NFL down when it matters yet. I certainly have them too but I have insulated then with 4 other RB's..

But in all seriousness, here's where I'm actually at @TheWinz

I'm playing around with only 4 RBs (with different bye weeks of course) since we seem to kind of have a freebie RB2 in Pierce and likely a freebie RB3 in Robinson. Having 2 such undervalued players, would that mean the risk in running with 4 significantly decreases?

True. With my group of WR's though I dont think I'll be flexing RB at all or need to. An injury for sure would derail me, but considering rolling with the 4.

No worries, to each their own! I wish you the best of luck this year though!!

So as we start to get closer to lock, anyone have any good ideas on how we can do some sort of live scoring each week? @Joe Bryant or @Contest Turk will there be anything within the contest itself that does live scoring or are we just working something outside of it?

@kyter1 I know you won't be able to do it, but any suggestions on how one of us could do a live scoring spreadsheet like you did last year? I really don't know all the ins and outs of how you put it together but I would be willing to learn..

Better to copy and paste the list it gives you once you click submit team as most of the issues people have when going through teams are bye weeks and yours aren't listed.

Pretty solid team from first look but QB is extremely worrisome imo. You might get bounced week 9 on Lance's Bye as you're relying on the Falcons QB to have a good game vs a good chargers defense.

YOu also have 3 of your 6 RB's on byes in week 9. (and your qb and 40% of your WRs)

Thanks for all of that. Will copy and paste the bye weeks next time, and thanks for pointing that out to me. QB is worrisome and I think I'll grab a lesser TE and invest that money in a starting QB if I stick with that lineup, which given the bye weeks, I won't.

Here's every player with over 33% ownership, 2015-21

[snip]

On average that's 4 players per year: 2.3 RBs, 1.3 WRs, and 0.4 others. Usually cheap to mid-range guys who moved their way up the depth chart after the pricing was set. With mixed results, e.g. Kareem Hunt had a huge year in 2017 after Spencer Ware got hurt, while Gus Edwards joined JK Dobbins on IR before the 2021 season started and missed the whole season.

Spreadsheet with 2015-21 ownership data, with some inconsistent formatting.
This year, those 2 RBs are Robinson and Pierce. The WR is Pickens. the QBs are Carr/Cousins.
I currently have all 5 rostered and they’ve all been locked into my entry for a week+.
If you could only take 2 of those 5, which 2 would you take?

Sorry for the slow reply. Was digging through old threads, and it's taking forever! Here goes...
QB - I am 99.99% sure I will roster the same 2 QB's, and feel no need to carry a 3rd. You don't get much rushing, but they are both capable of monster yards passing.
RB - I like the guys and may roster them all, but I think you may be counting too much on them. Unless Damien Harris gets traded or injured, this may be a case like Melvin/Javonte from last year. And Antonio Gibson/JD McKissic are still on the Redskins, so you have to temper expectations on Robinson. He may end up being TD dependent in the contest. If I decide to carry only 4, I want a warmer fuzzy. I think you went too thin here.
WR - I think you went too thick here. Five over $15 means you are guaranteed to have $16 minimum on your bench each week, on a single player. Again, like the players, but would consider moving some $$ up to RB.
TE - 2 studs... enough said
K - Monitor Gano's concussion. They just brought in Ryan Santoso, but this is surely Gano's job when healthy. Fairbairn and Gonzalez are safe.
D - MIN and ARI are on my short list, and have made my cut nearly every time. 3 for $9 and you can't go wrong.

About time. Don't take so long next time.

Haha kidding. Appreciate the feedback. I definitely will likely move some WR money to RB I think, I just got excited with that group of WR's and how I spread my byes out.

I'm probably just going to leave my kickers the way they are until September 5th and look at it again then.

Total value: 250

At QB, I wish I could find a way to squeeze Pickett in as the third QB.

At RB, I really wanted Javonte Williams at $25 over Chubb, but I'm I can't seem to find another buck unless I roll with 2 and 3 ratio of defenses/kickers. I could also save a buck if I downgrade one of my upside young WRs to low ceiling vet. I'm looking at you AJ Green and Sammy Watkins. I am worried that Chubb will see stacked boxes all season long. I'm counting on Dobbins being healthy, the Ravens running a lot, and him getting the lion's share of the touches. Like everyone else, Robinson and Pierce are locked in. I think Wilson and Moss are best $3 bets you can make at RB. I wish I could squeeze Mike Davis in some how.

At WR, I'm choosing to believe the narratives that JJ will be this year's Kupp and Renfrow will be peak Welker/Edelman. These two also give me a couple of QB/WR stacks. Kirk feels like a volume based safe floor. My other WRs are upside plays. As mentioned above, Watkins/Green might replace one of them so I have that extra buck for Javonte.

At TE, I want Kelce as I don't believe in any other receiver in KC. If there was a year he gets absolutely force fed, this is it. Schultz is playing this season for the bag, has a rapport with Dak, and there are plenty of targets up for grabs in Dallas. IMO Alie-Cox is the best low cost TE available and I think he outperforms his cost.

Any feedback is totally appreciated.

QB - You are buying the ATL QB for $9, with a bit of insurance built in. But lemme ask you this, would you rather buy the SEA QB for $10? Or do you think SEA is going to start someone other than Smith/Lock?

Not sure I follow, but no, I wouldn't rather have the SEA QB for ten dollars. At all. I think ATL's offense is going to be better than people give it credit for.

28 Man Rooster.... I really like the cheapo receivers this year.
  • Rooster Construction
    • 3 QB / $31 / 12.4% of budget
    • 6 RB / $80 / 32.0% of budget
    • 9 WR / $77 / 30.8% of budget
    • 4 TE / $44 / 17.6% of budget
    • 3 K / $9 / 3.6% of budget
    • 3 D / $9 / 3.6% of budget
  • Bye Week Analysis
    • Week 6 - 2 QB/ 4 RB / 8 WR / 3 TE / 2 K / 2D counting, 27.6% of budget taking a rest day :scared:
    • Week 7 - 3 QB / 5 RB / 8 WR / 4 TE / 3 K / 3 D counting, 15.2% of budget out partying
    • Week 8 - 3 QB / 5 RB / 8 WR / 4 TE / 3 K / 3 D counting, 9.2% of budget taking a cruise
    • Week 9 - 2 QB / 6 RB / 7 WR / 4 TE / 2 K / 3 D counting, 6.8% of budget relaxing
    • Week 10 - 2 QB / 6 RB / 7 WR / 3 TE / 3 K / 2 D counting, 23.6% of budget taking off :scared:
    • Week 11 - 3 QB / 5 RB / 9 WR / 3 TE / 3 K / 2 D counting, 8.0% of budget watching the new series of Stranger Things
    • Week 12 - 3 QB / 6 RB / 9 WR / 4 TE / 3 K / 3 D counting, No byes :pickle:
    • Week 13 - 3 QB / 6 RB / 9 WR / 4 TE / 3 K / 3 D counting, 0.00% of budget taking off :pickle:
    • Week 14 - 3 QB / 5 RB / 7 WR / 3 TE / 2 K / 3 D counting, 9.6% of budget taking off
$250 / 100% of budget used, Iteration #5, only 1000 more to go.

At QB, I wish I could find a way to squeeze Pickett in as the third QB. You can, without changing much. But it will cost you one of your 3 D's.

I think Wilson and Moss are best $3 bets you can make at RB. I wish I could squeeze Mike Davis in some how. I giggled reading this write-up, because you sound like everyone... I want more money! If you really want Javonte, I would package up Chubb and Moss. I think Jeff Wilson is the better $3 pick.

At WR, I'm choosing to believe the narratives that JJ will be this year's Kupp and Renfrow will be peak Welker/Edelman. Kirk feels like a volume based safe floor. My other WRs are upside plays. As mentioned above, Watkins/Green might replace one of them so I have that extra buck for Javonte. I like the group, and it's nice to see someone spending on a top stud. I would revisit Doubs right before the contest closes, to see if he is still garnering the praise.

At TE, I love Kelce as I don't believe in any other receiver in KC. If there was a year he gets absolutely force fed, this is it. Schultz is playing this season for the bag, has a rapport with Dak, and there are plenty of targets up for grabs in Dallas. I was saying I like the idea of rostering both Mariota and Ridder. But I think of it more like this - you are not purchasing Mariota for $5 and Ridder for $4 - you are purchasing each one for $9, but it's a buy one, get one free deal. And they come with a safety net, because if one gets injured, the other is still the starter.

exactly. @rockaction you are in essence rolling with just 2 QB for $24. For me I would rather pick 2 from this group:
$14 - K Cousins MIN
$13 - D Carr LV
$12 - J Winston NO
$12 - T Tagovailoa MIA
$11 - J Fields CHI
$11 - T Lawrence JAX
$10 - R Tannehill TEN
$10 - M Jones NE
$10 - M Ryan IND

Or perhaps two of the $10 guys plus the ATL combo pack for nearly the same $ if you have faith they will Rise Up.

Cool. Thanks for taking the time to respond. When you put it that way, now I sort of get it. Yes, a few more bucks would get me D Carr as opposed to the nine-dollar ATL QBs.

The TD potential of the Carr/Cousins combo is pretty compelling; 2 competent middle of the pack QBs, each with one of the league's best receivers and decent ground games.

The downside, of course, is just 2 QB. You have to ride the other if one gets hurt. Luckily the byes are pretty early, weeks 6/7.

Sorry @rockaction I didn't finish talking about your squad...

RB - Leonard Fournette - 27
RB - Saquon Barkley - 26
RB - Elijah Mitchell - 18
RB - Dameon Pierce - 10
RB - Brian Robinson - 7
RB - Jeff Wilson - 3
That looks like a strong group, but over 50% of your RB budget is off week 9. Consider swapping out Saquon or Elijah.

WR - Justin Jefferson - 35
WR - CeeDee Lamb - 28
WR - Elijah Moore - 13
WR - George Pickens - 6
WR - Zay Jones - 5
That gets real thin real fast. I know that Pickens is only a cheap dart, but if I am carrying only 5, I don't want any bye conflicts.

TE - Dallas Goedert - 15
TE - Cole Kmet - 14
Two that should see a decent amount of targets. I like them.

PK - Graham Gano - 3
PK - Rodrigo Blankenship - 3
PK - Kaimi Fairbairn - 3
I am starting to warm up to Blankenship more. He seems to be distancing himself from Verity for the job.

TD - Green Bay Packers - 4
TD - Detroit Lions - 3
TD - Houston Texans - 3
Are you unhappy at any other spot, and wish you had just one more buck?

Sorry @rockaction I didn't finish talking about your squad...

No, no problem. I'll take it point-by-point.

Noted about the RBs and their byes. I'll have to adjust that.

WRs are indeed thin really fast.

Think I'm going to downgrade to Okwuegbunam at TE and use the five bucks elsewhere.

Thanks on the kickers.

I had 246 spent and four left. I decided to maximize it.

Again, this is really preliminary and I'm by no means an expert at this contest. I lose every year. I've gotten better since you and apalmer went over it with me that one year, but I'm still a novice, really. Thanks for your time TheWinz; you truly do love this stuff.

They have been in the NFL for a total of 18 seasons. Do you know how many combined games they have missed due to injury? Hold out one hand, then chop off your thumb and pinkie.

Carr had that awful leg injury that year. He only missed three games? He broke his leg. Must have been at the end of the year, then.
