That's my question, why the #### were they opening the door? Mobs are scary. Mobs dressed as undead or going to be full of idiots.
The driver is laying on the horn and hitting people with his car and not stopping I would open the door too if I were there.
Yeah, seems like the driver instigated with creeping forward and laying on the horn. You're not driving a bulldozer, guy. Once that started people started messing with him.

Either wait or turn around. Or you know, smash everyone I guess.
The driver should not have honked and creeped forward, but that was not threatening. Trying to open the door and jumping on his hood had to quite frightening...
The passenger door opening attempt happened post plowing. Sitting on the bumper was a ##### move, sure. Probably a great time to call the cops if you hadn't already as the driver.
How exactly would that work if you're deaf tho? Has SD upgraded their 911 system to handle texts?

It really depends on whether he snapped because he was afraid or he snapped because he was mad. I'm not sure I can make that judgement based on the video.

It's not like calling 911 would have immediately extricated his family out of a very dangerous situation

Blasting your horn and inching your vehicle up close to a crowd of pedestratians isn't threatening?

Both sides are at fault. If I'm in a crowd and some a$$ is laying on his horn and acting agressive in a car Id try to get people to let him trough or signal him to turn around instead of instigating or ignoring. If I'm the guy in the car I probably never get that close to a huge crowd blocking a main street as Id want space for the option of turning around if the wait took longer than I wanted.

Your world frightens and confuses me! Sometimes the honking horns of your traffic make me want to get out of my BMW.. and run off into the hills, or wherever..

Why were there no cops directing traffic or putting up detour signs? I have no clue what a Zombie walk is though. I think my reaction would have been to reverse instead but that's just me. Either way I wouldn't want those things surrounding my car.
Zombies don't obey traffic instructions, guy.

I put it on the event organizers to have someone directing traffic. Doesn't sound like there was much "organization" at all.

are you watching the same video as the rest of us. he didn't "plow" through the people until AFTER his windshield was hit and door opened.
On the slow-mo video, the guy starts driving through the crowd at the 1:17 mark. The dude opens the passenger door at the 1:25 mark.

They didn't start pounding on the car until he started pushing through the crowd. If he had just waited five minutes no one would have been hurt.
you mean on top of the 10 he already waited
So he had to wait a few minutes. Looked like there were other cars stopped and waiting don't see them pushing their way through a crowd with their cars. Sometimes things happen that make you have to wait awhile when you drive. You just don't run over people because you're in a hurry.

One could also say that you don't hold up traffic just because you want to play dress-up.

By all means, run them over.

I wonder how the cars next to and behind the guy managed the situation without running anyone over?

Or maybe when you see the way is blocked you turn around. Not drive right up to what's blocking the way and then run people over.

Blasting your horn and inching your vehicle up close to a crowd of pedestratians isn't threatening?
Actually, no, I don't think it is. I've both walked and driven through the French Quarter many times where cars are trying to get through an area with lots of pedestrians. Surprisingly, inching forward and sometimes honking happens, it's not considered threatening at all, and pedestrians move out of the way and the car moves through. When that happens, you will sometimes hear words exchanged or unkind hand gestures, but that's how "civilized" people handle that kind of relatively common situation.

What you don't see are people reacting to horn honking and inching forward by sitting on the hoods of cars or trying to open car doors.

IMO, lots of blame to go around here:

1) Driver before people sat on his car/knocked on windows/tried to open door -- Could have been more patient or tried to go another route. Could be considered very rude by honking and pulling foward. Not illegal

2) Zombies standing in the road not moving -- Should have been aware that they are holding up traffic and moved. Probably illegal, but not ultimately responsible.

3) 2 idiots that sat on the hood of the car and whoever else started hitting the window -- 100% responsible for the woman's injuries. No matter how much honking the guy is doing, you simply cannot damage or threaten a person in a vehicle in such a manner.

4) Driver after people sat on his car/knocked on windows/tried to open door -- No fault at this point considering the actions of the people listed in #3. In fact, he went straight to a police officer after this happened and he hasn't been arrested. Would seem to me they agree as well.

Nothing would have happened at all if the driver would have acted like all the other drivers along the route did. Wait it out or turn around. What made him so special?

Along the same lines, nothing would have happened if those pedestrians weren't illegally blocking an intersection by just standing there. Walk through it or stand somewhere else. What made them so special?

Of course, the zombies blocking the road happened first, mind you.

or if those people had quietly stepped aside to allow traffic through...they couldn't wait two minutes?

Serious question: If drivers are ticketed for wearing headphones and listening to music, why are deaf people allowed to get drivers licenses?

I agree with this. I would also throw the event organizers in there for not going through the trouble getting permits and police escort, or at the very least have their own people escorting the walk and making sure they don't block traffic and the like.

Not sure what the traffic situation is on San Diego, but do we have any evidence that turning around was even a viable option?
Clearly the only option was to plow people over. I think he should get a gift certificate for waiting as long as he did.

Not sure what the traffic situation is on San Diego, but do we have any evidence that turning around was even a viable option?
There were probably zombies back the other way too. They tend to swarm in situations such as this.

I’m a bit confused as to why there wasn’t a police presence already. It was clearly a busy intersection. The kids were scared? Scared of what exactly? No one around the car appeared to be dressed like zombies. If they were, it certainly wasn’t a majority. Yes, the crowd was acting like jackasses just standing in the street for no apparent reason. If we all ran over others for acting like asses, body shop workers would be paid like CEOs.

Lots of different things could have happened and lots of things could have/should have been done different. But it doesn't excuse the ultimate actions of people sitting on his car, banging on his window, and opening his door. That's the illegal and critical point of this situation. Everything prior is just bad behavior and lack of courtesy by many different people. Everything afterward is a direct result of those few individuals who felt empowered by being in a mob.

A driver cuts me off.

I yell at the driver.

The driver gets out of his car, pulls a gun, and shoots me.

Nothing would have happened at all if I didn't yell at the driver. But does that mean it's ok for him to shoot me? He shouldn't have cut me off. I shouldn't have yelled at him. But up until that point, that's all it is.

Let's change the scenario just a bit.

Zombies are blocking the intersection just like the story. Guy, who some might call impatient, starts to inch forward and honk his horn just like the story. Now, who's ok with what happens next:

1) Someone sits on his car hood and starts banging on his windows (just like the story)

2) Someone opens his car door and punches him in the face.

3) Someone in the crowd pulls out a gun and waves it at him

4) Someone in the crowd pulls out a gun and shoots at him.

Is anyone ok with any of the above? Do the driver's actions up until that point justify any of the 4 options above? If someone had punched him or brandished a weapon or actually shot at him, would anyone be blaming the driver for inching up and honking as being a legitimate reason for someone to threaten or cause him harm?

If not, then maybe you don't think that sitting on a car or opening a door is along the same lines as options 2-4. And that's where I'd disagree because those actions are just as threatening and what easily justifies the guy hitting the gas and getting out of there.

The driver was an #######, but he was legally allowed to be in that intersection. The pedestrians weren't. Does that give him license to run them over? No, but it does give him license to inch forward and honk his horn to signal to them that they are blocking his path and should let him through. Once they start acting like a mob and banging on his windows and try to open his door I have no problem with him getting out of the situation quickly. At that point it's F those people I gotta protect my family.

It's too bad a lady got hurt, but let's be honest... If she were standing somewhere other than the middle of an intersection she would be fine right now.

It was a one way street. But turning around and breaking for the law for the sake of the Zombies loitering in an intersection is for some people preferable to honking and inching through the crowd.

what if he had to pee really bad?

Seems like a stupid chance to take that a driver knows you're just messing around. Impede a car and start banging on it when the driver gets nervous and you get what you get.

Add kids to the mix and the odds you're going to be run down go way up.

Yield to pedestrians down?

Line markings indicate otherwise. But with a few bike taxis in the opposite lane already, not to mention the horde in front of him, no room to turn around.

Personally, I think both sides are in the wrong. But if you're a pedestrian and a car is just a few feet away, blasting its horn, and inching forward, I think that would be intimidating in that it is an implied threat that you're going to be run over. Which, of course, is precisely what happened.

I've been honked at as a pedestrian several times though out my life. Never once have I thought it's because the driver is threatening to run me over.

Why is it an implied threat? Honking the horn is just a warning that you intend to keep moving forward. If you are unable to get out of the way of a vehicle going 1 mph, perhaps you should not be out in public.

Good point.

Also relevant is whether Zombies can hear car horns? In this video, the evidence would suggest they can't.

Given bigbottom's careful analysis, when PEOPLE hear car horns and feel intimidated, they move out of the way.
