Cleveland Browns (3 Viewers)

Yesterday the special teams got off a horrible punt giving the Bengals the ball at the 45 yard line then they scored on a trick flea-flicker.
Ya know, that happens but I'm not calling it a defensive breakdown because a DB got fooled coming-up and dropping coverage on what was a damn good fake by the Bengals. Sometimes gotta give props.
The defense did a good job, essentially giving up 16 points to a good offense and we still couldn't stop the run.
I've gone on enough on the non-existent DT play all year. HUGE personnel problem, biggest on the team.
Add in losing 3 starting LBers?
I mean come on.
We'll get the LBers back and Deion Jones, the guy we got for a song has looked pretty good to me leaving DT as thee major personnel issue on defense.
For me?
I LOVE pass rush and would continue to add pass rushers. I am a complete nut job for having a dominating pass rush that installs fear into opposing QBs. We have Myles (No one on the Browns has more than 2.5 sacks alongside Garrett) but I want more and more and more pass rushers to the point it is stupid like the Eagles.

so… do the players on defense stink, or is it the DC?

this team is so inconsistent, it makes my head hurt.
DC: predictable, uninspiring, and lacks situational awareness
Edge: Garrett speaks for himself, but we needed a healthy + effective Clowney (not since week 2) because the depth wasn't ready - Wright and Thomas may be ready for rotational role now
iDL: sucks out loud - Winfrey may be ready for rotational role now, but both Elliott and Togiai were whiffs
LB: with hindsight, needed a healthy Walker because Phillips ain't it - DT's a bigger problem moving forward
CB: can Newsome stick inside? If yes then this a develop cheap depth position group.
S: I'm open minded to Delpit being less of a problem with a new voice leading the group, but John Johnson is a disaster.

TlDr: due to years of mid round misses talent is a problem, but more than that this group needs leadership. Maybe Walker was part of that answer, but that isn't Ward nor Garrett's personality. Getting the right DC in there is priority #1, but all 3 rooms need a veteran voice for the youth to follow. Here's hoping Emerson, Wright, and Winfrey were the beginning of a correction because (cheap) draft hits are necessary for this iteration of the Browns to sustain.
agreed, but is there maybe a LB or DT free agent they can get to help patch this thing up to go along with those younger players?

obviously they can't spend their way out of this, but maybe one or two guys that can come in?

also, is there anyone that's available to come in as an upgrade to Woods? i doubt there's anyone on staff they would like to promote.

they've got some nice pieces, but they just look so bad at times.

There's quite a bit of spending flexibility. Questions are how much a) of it Berry will eat into and b) will Watson restructure - knowing both will reduce future roll-overs. There are lots of ways to attack the problems on the roster, but I think their plan A will be to scour those with cap problems and see if they can duplicate their trade for Amari Cooper. I don't know what the Bucs think about him (or if the regime returns in the first place), but Vita Vea immediately jumps off the page.

that's a good call. Bucs could be in rebuilding mode if Brady walks off.

Glimmer of hope with a rookie DT who played well against the Bengals.

Browns vs. Bengals Snap Count Observations: Perrion Winfrey here to stay, an ode to 12 personnel
...Make it three straight weeks where rookie defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey has put a positive step forward for the Cleveland defense. As the Browns continue down these last four games, there is no reason to expect this to change as Tommy Togiai has been benched and Winfrey continues to hold a formidable chunk of the rotation.

Only third-year defensive tackle Jordan Elliott played more snaps than Winfrey at the position as he out-snapped Taven Bryan. Finding even one salvageable piece on this defensive line would be huge for the Browns as they look to overhaul the bulk of the room this offseason. Winfrey is proving he can play at the NFL level.

He’s stacked positive weeks, so it will be interesting to see if Winfrey can continue to take steps forward after a rocky start to his rookie season.

This season, Jack Conklin ranks 25th among offensive tackles in run block win rate (76.5%) and 10th in pass block win rate (92.4%) #BrownsCLEBrowns2022SeasonEmoji.png
-------------------------------
Browns maintain continuity upfront by inking Jack Conklin to big extension
-------------------------------
This extension 'probably' means we won't be able to re-sign Pocic.
Add, Duffin has been pimpin' we trade OLT Wills to Denver who is in desperate need of an OLT. They lack first round draft picks due to the Russell Wilson trade so I 'think' he suggested a player-for-player deal of Wills for WR Jerry Jeudy. Seems 'reasonable' since he has OT Chris Hubbard taking over at left tackle and we are shy one starting WR.
-------------------------------
Jack Duffin@JackDuffin
When you see AB spend $31m/2 on a RT you consider worthy of $9-10n a year 1f62c.png If Conklin returns to an All-Pro & we trade Wills then I can 100% get onboard but this seems excessive to me. You pay Pocic & then we are spending $145m on our LG to RT next 3 years, crazy 1f911.png

Browns punter Corey Bojorquez has been solid all season and tore it up last Sunday. He was named Special Teams Player of the Week, third special teamer awarded that honor this season.
I've been a critic of Priefer but have to acknowledge the improvement with the overall special team play this year. I thought we'd struggle after losing the Pro Bowl KR to IR in training camp and they were a bit shaky early but have really looked good this year.

#BrownsCLEBrowns2022SeasonEmoji.png punter Corey Bojorquez named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Bojorquez had punts downed at the 4- and 5-yard lines and recorded a 64-yard punt
Daryl Ruiter@RuiterWrongFAN
#BrownsCLEBrowns2022SeasonEmoji.png have had 3 Special Teams Player of the Week awards this season - Cade York in Week 1, DPJ in Week 13 & now Bojorquez, so yeah, I think it does.

So in the end that Jets loss does come back to haunt us. If Nick Chubb just falls down or steps out at the 1 or if the defense doesn't allow a bomb for a TD or if they could just recover an onside kick the Browns would be 8-8 and would have a chance to make the playoffs.

If NE and Miami both lost which is very possible it would be a win and in situation between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Well would not have mattered anyway had they beat the Jets now we see. I sure hope Watson can rebound next year.

Browns cut ties with Bernie for betting on the game?? WTF??
He lost the bet... $19,000 on the Browns. He had vowed to donate the winnings to charity when he placed the bet. It was part of a promotional gimmick for his show sponsored by tipico sportsbook.

I heard on Fox8 that because Bernie technically worked for the NFL he is forbidden from betting on games so the Browns had no option.

Also, the Cleveland #BrownsCLEBrowns2022SeasonEmoji.png will receive a pair of compensatory third-round picks for developing a minority candidate. I’d say the hire is a win for both franchises.

The Titans are interested in Browns Assistant GM Glenn Cook for their GM position which would also mean comp picks.

We should definitely entertain the possibility of trading for DeAndre Hopkins.
Jack Duffin
@JackDuffin
Last time Hopkins was traded he got a $54.5m/2 year extension 1f4b0.png

Don’t think it’s unrealistic he will want his current deal torn up:
2023 - $19,450,000
2024 - $14,915,000
Then replaced with something like Diggs & Metcalf’s $24m a year Say $72m/3 is likely his asking price 1f914.png
Jack Duffin@JackDuffin
“likely to seek a new deal” Would say that effectively rules the #BrownsCLEBrowns2022SeasonEmoji.png out if I had to guess 3rd round pick min & a new deal isn’t really plausible when you have no 1st rounder and a $20m a year Amari Cooper
Jordan Schultz
@Schultz_Report
Sources: #AZCardinals plan to try and trade All-Pro WR DeAndre Hopkins this offseason. DHop has 2 yrs and $34.36M left on his contract and is likely to seek a new deal. Owner Michael Bidwill plans to express this to GM candidates. My story, via @theScore: https://thesco.re/3iwYJ5VJSAA

with the number of holes this team has, no way they are taking on a high priced WR.

imo they don't need much on offense. they will find a cheap option to help stretch the field if they finally cut Schwartz.

most of this offseason should be about the defensive line and linebacker positions.

He hasn't played a full season in what? 2 years? Whether suspended or injured, he hasn't shown much reliability. That aside, what does he provide that Cooper hasn't? We need a burner/field stretcher more than we need DHop. Speed isn't his forte. Id rather let so me other team pay his soon to be hefty price tag.

Free safety instead of linebacker, but otherwise - spot on.

i read an article yesterday that Jim Schwartz like to run schemes fairly similar to Woods.

they seemed to think this was a positive because the players wouldn't need to learn anything remarkably different from what they were already doing.

i'm thinking they should flush whatever the heck they were doing this year and go in a different direction.

why get a new coordinator and then keep the same schemes?

if you don't think they can coach the players they already have, then sure. but they've invested a ton of resources into that secondary. there should be enough on hand to make it work, imo.

personally, i'd like to see a thumper at MLB.

but the obvious problem is DT. if they could get a couple of mean dudes up front, this could be a whole new defense next year.

I'm expecting John Johnson to be cut and a new DC to use Grant Delpit as a box safety instead of square pegging round holing him into the hybrid Joe Woods covets. Invest in DL and FS then use duct tape and super glue at LB and I think we have the ingredients for a stout defense.

Not exactly the same. He runs a lot of Philly wide-9 rush schemes AND places emphasis on the defensive interior.
-------------------------------
Quincy Carrier
@Kwen_C

Jim Schwartz if I remember correctly has alot of WIDE 9 technique in his defense also is someone who has always put emphasis on interior D Line play so I’d be fine with it. again it’s not gonna take a genius to get the Browns defense to be good next year, just competence

you guys probably know way more about defense than i do, i'm still learning.

but it seems to me if a competent DC can get the defense into the top 10-15 range, the Browns should be able to make the playoffs next year.

speaking of which, is there somewhere out there to watch the all-22 that doesn't require a subscription? it's hard to see what the heck is actually happening on most plays with the broadcast angles.
