Contractor guys - Squeaky floor (1 Viewer)

How do you fix a squeaky floor? Looking at buying an older house and every step you take in it is squeaks loudly. It's currently carpeted (would replace with harwoord/laminate) and has tongue and groove underneath.

Yes. Drop ceiling in the basement.
Can you tell if there's bridging between the joists? No matter - put in more; like every 12". If they're normally spaced, you can buy metal bridging that'll work; if not, cut blocks of wood and wedge them in.

It's just loose floor boards causing it?
Yes...as the wood expands and contracts over time, the holes where it was nailed tend to loosen a little around the nails and the wood slides along the nail shaft creating the squeaks.  Usually a few well places screws will help alleviate the problem, but you need access to put the screws in.

Can't wait to replace my carpet just to get to the squeaky floors upstairs. I bought that "drill these through the carpet" things from the other thread, but have yet to actually try the out.
