unreal round yesterday, played 2 over on the front nine and then suddenly at 10 I forgot how to hit my tee shots and play 10 over on the back :wall:

No lie I had 3 rounds in a row exactly like this. Wasn't tee shots but irons .....tops thins the works

Luckily last round was a normal decent one

Doing a golf trip with some buddies to Scottsdale area in March. 8-12 guys in total. 2 full days not counting travel days.

I've been put in charge of course selection and tee times and know nothing about the area, other than that it has some great courses. These are all FBG worthy dudes so cost not much of an issue. Looking for recommendations. Also is Stadium course actually worth playing or is it more of an "I did that" thing w/out the actual bleachers (which I assume will be long gone by late March).

Very interested in this as well, as I'm considering a week down there in like late January just to get out of the cold.

I think I've answered this previously in this thread, but here are some input for Scottsdale in March:

1. March is going to be crazy and expensive due to spring training. I understand cost isn't much of an issue and the weather will make it worth it, but be prepared to pay the highest prices of the year.
2. Stadium is good but IMO not worth it. In March it may still be a bit beat down from the WM Open and the stands will likely be down. Nonetheless, I believe a caddie is required and you're looking at probably a $600 round with tip at least. Again, it's fun, but for that coin there are much better courses and all you're getting in the benefit it to say you've played it and it makes watching the Open more fun in the future. It's sister course - known as Champions Course - is just as nice for a fraction of the cost.
3. If you're doing two full days, then I'd suggest:
- We Ko Pa: Two beautiful desert courses that are always in great shape. About a 15 minute drive from Scottsdale. When we do our local guys' mini-trips (doing one in a couple of weeks) we always hit Ke Ko Pa. Book now though as tee times fill. You can probably play 36 there in one day if you do it right. They also have a really nice lodging option.
- Wickenburg Ranch - Maybe a 45 minute drive from Scottsdale, but this is a similarly great desert course and they have a cool little 9 hole par 3 course in a canyon that is a blast to play after a morning full round and lunch. Lots of good gambling opportunities! Only heads up here is Wick Ranch may have turned fully private.
- Greyhawk - a much more conveniently located option and they also have 36 holes, but they're a bit pricy for the cost. Courses are always very nice though and also provides a true desert golf experience.
- Talking Stick - 36 holes at the main Indian Casino in the area. The courses are a bit easier and not as interesting, but the location is great.

I say all the above assuming you guys don't have some connection to the private courses. If you do, then you should absolutely play those as Whisper Rock, Desert Forest, Estancia, Phoenix Country Club, Mesa Country Club are all just amazing with first class amenities and courses.

Hit me up if you do. @shadrap lives in the Valley as well and may be interested.

I played the stadium course when we went out on our boys trip and it was fine to play but nothing special without the bleachers. My favorite course was the Monument course at Troon North, the course kicked my *** a bit but I thought it was up there with some of the better courses that I've played (sand hollow, yocha de he, torrey).

Troon North is a good call as well.

Some other suggestions that are a bit of a drive from Scottsdale:
1. Gold Canyon - Dinosaur. Some of the coolest views in the Valley. They also have a second 18 (Sidewinder) that's perfectly fine but not as good. Probably a 45 minute drive southeast of Scottsdale.
2. Wildhorse Pass Casino has two courses that are very nice. Think We Ko Pa but just a notch down. This is in the southern part of the Valley and probably also a 45 minute drive.

Forgot to mention Quintero earlier. Always ranked in top 5 for public courses.

A course near me is actually open tomorrow. I'd like to say I played real golf in Minnesota on December 20th, but it's still only going to get to 40 degrees with about a 10 mph wind.

Decisions, decisions... 🥶

Dec-Feb in Texas often in the 40s, often a great time. My go to moves are:
1. Walk
2. Plenty of layers
3. I do a yeti full of piping hot hot chocolate (and sometimes a little crema de tequila)

That's a automatic yes for me. I try to get out once or twice a month if it's going to be 40° or above

I also have wind gloves, heavy gloves, winter golf shoes

I'm playing an impromptu scramble event with 12 guys on Sunday morning.
Supposed to be in the high 40's which will be fine or terrible depending on the wind. Local Public course with zero tree protection, so fingers crossed

But in Minnesota? Yikes. ,T&P

I'm playing We Ko Pa on 12/18 and will report back as to its condition.

ETA: I believe we're playing Grayhawk on 12/19 as well.
Played both Wekopa courses this week. Only negative thing I have to report is that my handicap calls for me to shoot like 1 over from the standard men's tees and neither course is that easy. So, my 81 and 78 were no good and cost me money each day.

But, the positives:
1. Course was nice as always (they have no water restrictions) but the greens were especially immaculate.
2. Generally, when a place has more than one course my experience is that there's always a "better" course. At Wekopa I still don't know which is better and after polling our entire group it was split. I asked the starter on Cholla day 2 which is the workers' favorite and it sounds like they prefer to play for money on Cholla. My take is that Saguaro is the more traditional golf course and therefore I'd prefer it better over time but Cholla, while more gimmicky, had more fun holes I thought. Either way, my point is that both courses seem equally as nice so it's a real positive to me if I'm planning a guys' trip.
3. Food there is surprisingly good.
4. Pace of play wasn't an issue. I generally play fast but I never felt like I waited a bunch.
5. Views are very traditional desert course views.

Did not play Grayhawk. Played Mesa County Club instead (also got rained out there today which was a bummer). Playing a lesser course (Apache Creek) out by Gold Canyon tomorrow weather permitting.

Still kicking around the idea of an end of January trip. Was looking at tee times yesterday and was surprised at just how expensive Greyhawk was. Like 350+ a round.

I'm not opposed to paying it for an elite course, but that's a big nut

I did play yesterday. Was pretty decent until the clouds rolled in around hole 13. The ball does not fly AT ALL in the cold.

Was originally looking at playing tomorrow just for the novelty. Refuge and few others still open. I would never in October but now why not! Glad you enjoyed for the most part.

I played Greyhawk a few years ago. Fantastic condition, but to me there wasn’t a lot especially interesting or unique about it. Would much rather go back and play Troon North, TPC or Wekopa, although I’m sure none of those are any cheaper…..

Any of yall have those Garmin CT10 things for your clubs? I got Garmin Fenix 7 watch a month ago on a black Friday deal, not really for golf, but its turned out to be pretty awesome. I've gotten 4 or 5 rounds in the last month and been letting my watch keep score. I get a small little gold mine of data back without doing much.

All that digging lead me to the CT10. Its basically a NFC tag you put on each club. After enough rounds it will eventually learn the yardage you hit each club. I upgraded clubs after 20+ years last year and its been giving me fits finding my yardage again.

Anyone use these? Helpful at all, or just some more golf gadget nonsense?

I've not used it but my BIL (4 handi) has something very similar and loves the data he gets back.

Wekopa is cheaper for sure. Especially if you do the replay.

Yeah, the watch alone gives me good info I never put much thought into. Fairways hit, drive distance, etc. This would dial it up even more. Supposedly its techy enough to know how many putts you attempt in a round, GIR.

It can't make you a better golfer, but will certainly point out your weak spots. I dont think I'll hate it if I purchase it.

For my BIL, it's really changed what he hits off the tees.

Put down my deposit for a Bandon Dunes trip in May. Everything I hear about this place makes it seem almost impossibly great. Anyone ever been? We have 12 guys for a full week, one round at every course.
It's pretty great. Just beware of rain and definitely make sure you take care of your feet (waterproof shoes, shoes designed for walking, etc.).

And bring your checkbook. It ain't cheap.

Yes. Best trip of my life. Would've paid three times as much and still been worth it.

Get caddies. Again, not cheap, but you really have to. Will improve your experience IMMENSELY.

Was there in March. Got incredibly unlucky with the weather, which probably made it difficult to enjoy to its fullest. Still had a great time of course. As others have said, get a caddy at least some of the time. Have a drink and do the putting course. Bring 2-3 pairs of golf shoes. Make sure you do the par 3. All restaurants were really good; reservations in advance help. Casino about 30 minutes away but not much else to do in the area. Everyone seems to rank the courses differently. Personally I wasn’t enamored with Trails or Sheep, but that’s just me. It may have had something to do with the snow falling at the time :crying:

Landmand Golf Club opened in northeast Nebraska in the fall of 2022. A friend of mine played it a couple times last year.

Tee times opened at 8:00 this morning. I jumped on the site at 8:00 and was able to select a late May Sunday tee time. Site locked up when trying to check out.. Tried a late June Sunday tee time. Site locked up. Finally jumped to September and was able to book an 11:00 am Sunday tee time.

As of typing this there is only a slot for a single on July 4th at 8:00 available. Temping. All other weekend and weekday slots are booked for the year.

Headed out to Scottsdale this coming weekend and hyped for it. We nixed the double round day with sunlight at a premium and playoff games, so morning-mid morning tee times Sa/Su/M at Grayhawk, then Troon North, the We-Ko-Pa.

Can't wait! Played PGA Frisco West this past weekend in prep, walking with no push cart. We'll see if I break down and ride the second or third day.

ETA: Posted too soon. PGA Frisco was AWESOME. Amazing condition for January. Immaculate greens, really fun and challenging course even though it's not that long (which is perfect for me to try every club, especially in the cold and I'm not super long off the tee). 92 but I had two OB off the tee and 2 lost balls in hazards :( - room to improve!

ETA2: course mgmt tips welcome

Also, cool invite...

Not sure, I'll check. It's my "last trip before fatherhood" and there's 6 of us, so if you want to join a day PM me and that would be fun! Be ready for 6 30-33 year olds all about to have their first kid or be married this year LOL.

Ha, sounds good - I'll try to talk you guys out of more!

I'll check my schedule and shoot you a pm.

Yeah that’s crazy. We played it last year and definitely enjoyed it but I’m not sure it quite deserves that kind of demand. Craziest greens I have ever played on. At the time they had recently had a ton of rain and the bunkers were barely playable. Lots of fun holes though- huge bowl green on 10, couple drivable 4s, etc

Enjoy the trip, sounds awesome. Troon North is still in my all time top 10….

Meant to post this last weekend but I’ve never legitimately shot below par. Was -2 though ten holes last week on a golf I could attack in Sedona. Got greedy on a par 5 after bogeying hole 11 from the fairway and hooked a three wood approach shot ob. Shot 73. One bad swing and two bad bogeys (one from the middle of the fairway and one where I was thirty yards from the green in one.

One day…
