It's all about keeping those cranky knees happy. So far, so good.By the way, I knew Carlos Beltran was good, but not this good. He threw Belt out at 2B with a great throw, then homered off Cain in his 1st AB. He has really taken the sting out of losing Pujols.
Really not a fan of this off-season so far. I knew it was going to be quiet, and I knew that LH reliever and RH bench hitter with some pop were the top priorities. I'm just completely underwhelmed with the multiyear contracts given to crusty old players to fill those roles like Choate and Wigginton. With no Pujols contract, they shouldn't be in position to be settling on these contracts. There is no reason they couldn't match the commitment the Angels made to Sean Burnett, for example.Cards sign Wiggy to a 2 year deal for about 5 mil. Um, yay?
Well, Choate is darn solid against his own kind (you can argue one of the best in baseball), but he's going to be a LaRussa-type specialist where he gets murdered against righties. Not a whole lot of bang for the buck, IMO and I agree, they should have pushed for Burnett, who is younger and isn't completely useless against righties.Wiggy...whoopie. If he performs to even 2009-2011 levels, fine. If he matches 2008, fantastic. If he matches 2012, ####.My guess is they're really worried about what they're going to have to pay Waino. But still, Berkman is gone too, and he made a pretty penny.Really not a fan of this off-season so far. Not spectacular moves, but they should both help the team. Especially Choate.Kind of bummed to see Skip get traded, but there wasn't really a spot for him any more.I'm hoping they are going to acquire a 2B/SS with the $$ the aren't spending.Well, Choate is darn solid against his own kind (you can argue one of the best in baseball), but he's going to be a LaRussa-type specialist where he gets murdered against righties. Dan Plesac brought up Tulo to the Cards no less than five times during MLB Network's Winter Meetings coverage. I don't know if he was making that up because it was just something that made sense to stir the pot on, or if he may have had some insight into the fact that there may be some dialogue between the two teams. In any case, I can't imagine them landing him without giving Miller, Rosenthal/Kelly, and then some. One of my pipe dreams has been Cards landing Tulo...that will never happen, but sure would be nice. Not spectacular moves, but they should both help the team. For the love of all that is holy this would be such a perfect fit - my favorite current player going to my favorite team to fill a need that can keep them in the mix for the division. If they could get away with Miller and some lesser prospects I'd be all for it...but not sure I would want to lose Rosenthal.Dan Plesac brought up Tulo to the Cards no less than five times during MLB Network's Winter Meetings coverage. Shelby Miller is the easy answer. If Garcia isn't 100%, we'll probably see Kelly too.Waino/Garcia/Lynn/Westbrook/Miller is my guess.Bad news about Carp today. After I heard the news, I wondered if they might give Lohse a call since he still hasn't signed with anyone yet. I heard Mo isn't very interested in him though. Wonder who will take Carp's place?

Mozeilak has already said that Taveras likely won't break camp with the big league club unless someone gets injured. He feels Taveras needs as many ABs as possible, whether in the majors or AAA.What do you guys think the chances of the Big O (that is what one of the Cardinals beat writers called Tavares in an article the other day. I like the nickname) making the team out of camp. He would be a really nice 4th OF to have on the team. Matheny would have a nice bat in the lineup when he wanted to rest Beltran, Holliday, and Jay.
So, he would rather have Chambers and Robinson on the team? I like both, but I don't think either of them will be any better than role players. On the other hand, I am sure he is thinking about service time and how much this guy will cost the Cards here in a few years. The team looks really good so far. The only weakness I see is up the middle at SS and 2B. If Furcal is healthy and Wong makes the team, the middle won't be a problem.Mozeilak has already said that Taveras likely won't break camp with the big league club unless someone gets injured. No surprise here as I thought something was serious when they shut him down. Wonder if Mo is looking at any trade options?Per Derrick Gould with the Post-Dispatch, Furcal's having Tommy John surgery on elbow. Recovery around 8 months.Let the epic Kozma/Cedeno race at SS officially begin!
This should have happened last August. No idea why they let him get away with no surgery then.Per Derrick Gould with the Post-Dispatch, Furcal's having Tommy John surgery on elbow. Recovery around 8 months.Let the epic Kozma/Cedeno race at SS officially begin!
Apparantly, they can't make a player have surgery, and Furcal didn't want to have it.This should have happened last August. Interesting. I wonder if they have a possible grievance to file on the cash they owe him for this season. Honestly, I've never really looked into something like that. Any ideas?I seem to remember something similar happening with Troy Glaus and his shoulder. The Cardinals were very upset with him, but I don't remember anything coming of it.Apparantly, they can't make a player have surgery, and Furcal didn't want to have it.This should have happened last August. Agreed. Love the terms and that it cuts two years into his free agency with a club option for a third. He'll be through his prime before he ever hits the open market. They're buying all the good seasons at a discounted rate.Craig signed a 5 year extension today. Great move by the Cards! He is an RBI machine.
Troy Glaus...I forgot the Cards had him for one good year. I know his last year in Atlanta wasn't anything to write home about at all.As for Craig, that was a fantastic contract. Great move locking him up.I seem to remember something similar happening with Troy Glaus and his shoulder. The Cardinals were very upset with him, but I don't remember anything coming of it.
I'm sure Wainwright sees it that way, too.Great signing of Craig!

Ken Rosenthal reporting that Wainwright has agreed to 5-year, 97.5 mil extension.
Beltran is a FA after this season, you'll only have to wait one more year. I have a weird feeling that if there is a short-term injury to one of the corner guys, Craig may slide into the OF and Adams play some 1B. (Especially if Adams makes the club out of ST)When will one of your decrepit old outfielders die, so Taveras can get consitent ABs?
He needed the game he had today badly. Not a great start to the season for him.I'm not in any hurry to see Beltran leave.
Don't underestimate what Jay does in CF. Playing between Holliday and bad-wheeled Beltran is no easy feat, and he does it so well he makes it look like we have a competent outfield.Brady Marino said:He needed the game he had today badly. I really wish it was Taveras Time in CF instead of Jon "Meh" Jay.
Because Danny Descalso is AWESOME!So with Freese back, it's Carpenter that sits?
Was afraid that might happen. Really can't wrap my head around this guy being viewed as anything more as the last guy off the bench.Because Danny Descalso is AWESOME!So with Freese back, it's Carpenter that sits?
