The 3rd Hobbit. Meh. Basically the same as all the rest. The beginning was pretty solid and the end fights were pretty cool but the middle just drug on to me.
II watched it recently. It was the least enjoyable of all the Jackson/Tolkien movies to watch for me, and even worse than the first Hobbit movie. A lot of things bothered me in this one, including:- The scenes Jackson added in to set-up the LOTR movies seemed extremely forced and awkward. I particularly disliked the scene with Galadrial, Saruman, et al fighting the Ring-Wraiths/Sauron. I failed to see how it had any point to the movie other than as fan-service, and didn't even find it particularly well acted (given the talent in that scene). It just felt cheesy.
- The middle part about a mopey, greedy Thorin dragged and was boring.
- Peter Jackson's epic battles have become so formulaic that there is no longer any surprise or emotion for me when I view them. They all go the same way: Small army gets overwhelmed by a big army, but gets saved by an even bigger army or an unstoppable hero. Meanwhile all the lead characters fight like superstars, but encounter situations where their end looks dire, only to be saved at the last second by another character or a random rock/arrow. The hero's triumph in the end but someone critical to that victory dies, rendering a touch of bitterness and humanity to an otherwise resounding victory. Not sure more of the blame should reside with Tolkien or Jackson, but these battles have become a snore.
- While likely hard to avoid with 6 movies, the musical score has become repetitive.
I've really enjoyed this series and watched the LOTR movies several times, both of which may color my perspective a bit, but I'd probably rate this one 2/5
