Movies currently in theaters - Worth going? Stay home? Rent later? (1 Viewer)

The Fall Guy was...not good.

It never gains any momentum and the awkward interplay between the main characters is just clunky.

My wife said she enjoyed it because "it's supposed to be dumb". I get that but I just lost patience with it about half way through.

See it in the theater? Not necessary
Rent it? I guess, but I won't watch it again.
The Fall Guy, while not an award winning movie, was entertaining. I had low to medium expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

Okay, so as for the actual movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...

I thought it was great!

I worried that it would be too long at 2.5 hours but it wasn't. The story was solid, bordering on epic. The villain is pretty good.

But what impressed me most was the special effects. This movie looks awesome. The CGI faces are incredibly expressive. One of the things that's notoriously difficult is hair and not only does it look natural, it does so when in water as well. That means, the effects blend and aren't a distraction - which is what you want.

It's set up well for a sequel, if we get one.

See it in the theater?: Yes!
Rent it?: Most definitely, especially if you liked the first three at all.

Just got back from Furiosa. Meh...
Really? Bummer. I was actually going to try to get to the theater for this one as I loved Fury Road.
I have to qualify that with I'm not a huge MM fan anyway and didn't see Fury. My son saw Fury and said it was much better than this one. Lots of complaints about the CGI. Personally I'm not a fan of the "gimmick" of removing frames or "undercranking" to give it the jittery/sped up look. It seemed excessive or overly noticeable in this one. All that said, it still highly rated on RT and it's 2+ hours of almost non-stop action so not a terrible $6 afternoon movie with free popcorn.

One more thing about Fall Guy...

You know that poster from back in the day with Heather Thomas in the hot tub wearing the pink bikini?

When you see the mid-credits scene just remember - that was about 40 years ago. :sadbanana:

Not that I've seen it yet but seeing the 70 year old version will no taint the 25 year old version!@3!@##!@

Alien: Romulus

There are several conveniences to get the story going but once it does it actually and surprisingly works.

Cailee Spaeny, the lead actress, was actually quite good.

See it in the theater? Not necessarily
Rent it? If you like the franchise, yes

I enjoyed it
if you liked Fury road Im not sure how you dont like Furiosa. Wall to wall action - thought Hemsworth did well.
I started it and just felt it was meh. I thought Hemsworth looked goofy. Plan to give it another try soon.

I actually preferred Furiosa over Fury Road. I know I’m in the minority, but Fury Road felt like one long chase scene and I got restless after a while. Furiosa on the other hand seemed to be more complex with different camps strategizing against one another.

I enjoyed it but I was also watching on Max for free.

I liked both but I think Fury Road was the better movie. It was more realistic if that’s appropriate to use. There were a few times in Furiosa where there was too much magic movie stuff. Fury Road stayed a bit more in line with the rest of the Mad Max movies and Furiosa had some Michael Bay in it. Again, I liked both.

It’s nitpicking TBH. I liked Hemsworth and it was a fun movie. Hard to have non-stop action without trying to pull off huge action scenes that stretch too far.

Transformers One

This is a surprisingly good movie. Plenty of humor and the action in the last 30 minutes is terrific. Showing Megatron's path to bad guy was done well. I enjoyed it as did my 8 year old nephew.

See in theater?: At least worth a matinee
Rent it: For sure if you're into Transformers. Yes even if you're not

Shot in the dark but anyone with kids planning on going to Dog Man? My son loves the books and thought we'd go on a "Dude's Day" and see it, eat some greasy food and go sports card shopping.

Took the kids to see Jurassic Rebirth………..wait for the rental. I swear this movie was written by AI
Kid and I went over the weekend. We actually enjoyed it. But if you aren't a fan of all of them, then wait for rental/streaming.

Jurassic Park = Jurassic World. JP Lost World = JW Fallen Kingdon. JP3 = JW Rebirth. Dominion really was the only original story of JW sequels, albeit just an excuse to bring the two sets of trilogy stars together.

Anybody go see F1? Not a genre I remotely care about and yet.....I think this needs to be seen in a theater.

Definitely worth seeing in a theater. Went with my wife, neither of us are F1 or even racing fans really. We paid $3pp or so extra I think to see it in RPX, which I am generally loathe to do and it was awesome in RPX. Our seats were rumbling during the racing scenes and we both enjoyed it tremendously.

Might take the kids to see The Bad Guys 2 in a few weeks not really interested in seeing it myself but I wouldn’t mind some popcorn

I'm not into cars as much as other folks but I loved "Ford vs Ferrari" and regret I did not see it in the movie theaters
I would think F1 would be good on a big screen, I just felt like it was a bit commercial for me

Yeah it rules. Just a B+ level summer blockbuster not a masterpiece but I had a great time. I don’t care about cars either but if you liked Ford vs Ferrari and Top Gun Maverick then I think you will have a lot of fun.
I'm one of the few people that laughed thru most of Maverick, didn't find it that entertaining and no surprise that Cruise is trying to get a 3rd one made quickly
F vs F had Bale, Damon and a tight script, great cinematography and editing/sound, think it won a couple of Oscars for some of that.
Maverick didn't do much for me but I know many liked it

Definitely a movie theater movie. Its formulaic. A little silly. And TOTALLY awesome. A really fun summer blockbuster. And the racing scenes are dope as hell.

Right, I know what it is walking into it just like I did with Maverick. And I loved Maverick for just what I needed it to be. A mindless distraction that took me back to my youth and made me forget about life for 2ish hours. I think I'll give this one a go on half-price Tuesdays.

Trying to decide if I see Superman this weekend with the kids or wait for a rain day at the beach the following week to see it with the kids and grandparents. Not sure what other options will present (saw Barbie and Twisters the last two beach rain days.)

Yeah, Ford vs Ferrari is a better overall movie than Maverick. I agree and Maverick is very silly. So was the first Top Gun. But it's a silly action movie done about as well as it can be done. The flight scenes are unreal.

I was 12 when i saw Top Gun, I don't think I was analyzing the script much back then
Also didn't realize how ridiculous that volleyball scene was or some of other silliness

Same. I took Top Gun so serious as a kid. So much so, I owned the tape and typically just before Goose dies, I would turn it off because it was too sad. Then my HS film teacher told us the whole Tarantino riff about how Top Gun is gay. Once I heard that, it unlocked for me just how funny and cheesy the movie really is.

Superman was good with a 24 oz beer and a bag of popcorn. The dog was cringy, but the effects were great. The plot was not great, but Mrs Maisel as Lois Lane was good. Get a beer and just enjoy it.

Top Gun has never been a great movie but it makes an excellent Rorschach Test.
