Minecraft....I don't get the love? (1 Viewer)

My 9 year old loves this but I don't give him much screen time so he hasn't played it much.

I have it on my phone only right now. If I get it for my laptop, can I buy it once and put it on a couple of machines?
When you buy the game on the PC you can access it from any other PC because you have to sign into the main Minecraft server to play it. It doesn't download to your computer.

But certain files do, like the savegame files and any mods you download. So you can play it on more than one machine but you wont have the same game on every machine. You also have to remember that the PC minecraft world is infinite. There is no end to it at all. No final wall that you hit. There is a bottom floor - the bedrock - that you can dig to and I'm sure there is a limit to the height in the sky at some point, but east and west there is simply no end. On one of those websites that shows the size of planets and atoms and people and how everything relates to each other, the PC minecraft "world" is bigger than the planet Neptune in terms of quantifying the size of its data. So obviously you are't downloading that.

The XBox game is finite and has outer walls, but it is still so big with so much to do that you will never ever get to its end there either.
I buy all my games off steam. Clearly this one isn't on there. You just go to their site and plunk down your coin?
Only way to do it. Never goes on sale. My kids will never have it on PC. 360 is good enough.

My kids 9/6 are addicted to this. All their friends as well. Apparently older people as well.

They can sit nonstop for hours and watch Youtube videos of some Australian dude making stuff and commenting.

The graphics are terrible. With all the advancements in gaming technology people are somehow infatuated with a color Atari game.

I tried following and watching but after 5 min it started to give me a headache.

I just don't get the love for this game
HELLO!! This is Stampy!
He is like a Nanny to my kids
:lmao: That makes me feel a little better about myself. At lease I know I'm not alone.
:lmao: #######ed Stampy, constantly

yup

This might be an overly obvious observation, but the hook for this game is the same as it is for GTA, or Red Dead Redemption, or anything from that genre for adults. It's a wide open world and you can make it whatever you want.

My boys and the neighbor kids play "Hunger Games" on Minecraft. There are four of them. So one of them builds a small world, builds four houses, and then creates a few stashes of weapons. Some of the stashes are diamond, some wood, a mix, whatever. Then the other kids come in to the room, all jump on a controller and its a free for all. Try to find a stash and kill the others. Last one standing wins.

The cool thing about the game is that it can be whatever you want it to be. It is a lesson in economics to some, construction, engineering, or creative design, or even survival of the fittest.

My kids mostly play on their 360. They can get together with 2 other guys in the neighborhood and play 4 at a time. As other's have said, I figure it's better than just playing POV shooting games for 10-12 y.o. kids.

My oldest has a friend from school that only plays on a PC. We allowed him to buy his own membership t so he could play on our Mac over the internet with his friend. They don't get to see each other outside of school much, so having them talk via Skype and do Minecraft is fine with us. They also do tons of communicating via email which we figure is a good thing to start learning to do!

Don't think I've heard of Stampy. My little guy's go to is Popular MMO's. It's a guy and a girl that play together and comment as they play. But frankly I've lost track of everything on the PC.
Yeah, that's Pat and Jen. My boys like them, too. I told my son that Jen sounds cute and asked if they ever show her face. His reply was that yes, sometimes they show her. Oh. and that she likes to walk around the house naked. But they never show that, they just talked about it once. He thought that was really weird.

My son likes to watch a lot of the minecraft youtube videos. From what I can tell they are age appropriate but you have to be careful.

I've banned youtube for a while because of nerf gun battle videos. Those you need to watch out for. Lots of teenagers posting those and it's full of R-rated language. I told my son he can't watch youtube until he is older. Not sure when/if I'll lift the ban.

YouTube now has a "YouTube Kids" section/separate app. I don't know anything beyond that. I heard a headline about it's launch the other day and I saw it in the app store, but have not investigated.

How do u play simultaneously on xbox360? Like I play with my kid. Now its just him or me when be encounters bad guys. Can I turn off the bad guys?

We have xboxone, but I can't imagine its much different - you can play with multiple players. Yes, you should be able to adjust the settings to play creative - you just build stuff, or peaceful, where you still have to mine, but no BGs will kill you.

You just sign in with two players. Turn on the second controller and the screen will prompt you to hit start on the second controller, then the screen splits with player one either on top or on the left and player two on the other side.

You can adjust the settings from peaceful to hard prior to loading a safe file or starting a new game. Peaceful has no bad guys of any kind in it. That is in survival mode. You can also fool around in creative mode where there are no bad guys and you have access to everything in the universe to build with.

I showed my 5 year old nephew a youtube minecraft video of someone who built a scaled version of disneyland in MC. I turned it off when you could see his character name was something like Dildo_lord6969.

I bought this for my son on my PC after he played it for months on his ipad.

He got me to try it once. Oh ok.

Now I'm completely addicted. I play survival mode, but also hardcore on occasion just to see what I can do before something finally kills me.

ETA: It is the ultimate sandbox game. Anything goes. The cheesy graphics turn a lot of people off but honestly they become part of the charm after awhile. You come to love those square-headed chickens and cows....right before you slaughter them.

My 9 year old knows a hell of a lot about mining and refining different ores, crafting different objects and even wind turbines......from Minecraft.

She is also a god among the 7 year old boys at her school who dont yet have permission to watch Stampy teach this stuff.

I started playing with my son when he was 7ish. It's a fun game.

Also ideal for building a memory palace, if you are into that sort of thing.

I was under the impression that Stampy is pretty much G to PG rated in his videos, is he not?

If I remember right, Stampy is one of the better ones for kids to watch.

There are some out there that are pretty bad. Really have to keep a close eye on what they are watching. (mainly language)

That's been my experience so far.

This kinda reminds me of how we used to try and program Blackjack into our TI-81's in high school. Except better. Like way better.

Who the #### is Stampy. I watch Yogscast. Of course I'm 33 and their humor is geared more towards my demo. Yea Minecraft is awesome especially the mods. Galacticraft is what got me back in after playing vanilla for years. Playing solo is cool but its the most satisfying when you play on a server of close friends. Even griefing can be fun because you can get some payback on them. Especially if you set a trap.

Pretty much an endless supply of fun that you can always pick up and play within minutes. I can come back to it after months off and I'll be stuck digging rare gems in the bowels of the Earth for about 4 or 5 hours. Just mining.

You younger stepson has become so attached to the Minecraft sheep from his pixelated shepherding that he not only won't eat lamb, he complains strenuously whenever we even talk about having it.

Thanks a lot, Minecraft. Damn Swedes.

Just took the plunge and bought a minecraft server package for my son to have a persistent world for him and his friends.

It's only $4 a month. Why not? At least I get to control all the admin stuff (feeling big like Joe now). Put a swear filter on (be excellent to each other, you eight year olds), and disable p vs. p violence. You can also switch it from creative to survival and fix the difficulty. We'll see how it goes. I have nightmares of him freaking out one day when one of his friends blows up his castle or something.

You know, it would be pretty cool to have a FBG server (if enough were into it). I hear the Hunger Games type games are pretty fun.

Someone mentioned it before. I'd definitely be down for that if anyone ever started one.

Ok, you know how you're a 40 year old highly respected business owner whom other people look to to fix their lives and you are playing XBox Minecraft with your son and you are mining to find iron ore and you come up on a cavern that is pitch black and you get all nervous and tense as you try to navigate around dark corners while you hear the moans of zombies somewhere and you just know that one of them is going to get you from behind and you will lose all the ore you have on you, and then your son laughs at you, gets down there with you and puts torches everywhere so you can stop being afraid of the dark.

Yeah, that guy is a putz.

:scared:

Pfft. Get that iron armor, son. Usually what I do first. Punch a tree, build tools, build stone tools, dig down to the base level, mine iron, smelt, make armor. Now we can play.

Never played minecraft or really heard of it until this thread, but I've been watching Stampy videos every morning to put me in a good mood.

This has potential.

Village where we each build our own house. Huge group effort castle or something. Coop the resources. I might get back in to minecraft if this happens. Would it be something where the world always exists and I can just hop on at like 2am on a weekend to do some mining/building? Or would we all have to be in it at the same time?

I get that the hunger games stuff would require us all there, wondering about the down times.

I would set fire to your house. actually true.

I believe the world is always online so you can pop in and out regardless of who else is on.

Can you imagine the schtick-fest and arguments/issues that would come from that?

so you're saying I'd have to set fire to your house nine more times?

Persistent world. Anyone can jump on whenever. I just threw out the hunger games option for something to chew on. I'm more into the idea of a FBG world.

Here's the site that hosts them - https://apexminecrafthosting.com/

If one of you can talk chet or krista into fronting the money each month, I'd gladly play. Though I'd probably throw someone $5 if they set it up. I'm already paying for my son's server though; I don't want to double dip with the FBG responsibility as well.

We'd definitely have to set it to no FBG on FBG violence or it'd just spiral out of control, like a block headed version of GTA.
