Android apps (1 Viewer)

Just got my 1st smartphone, the new AT&T 4G, Inspire I think its called. Tried to open a Word doc today in an email and it wouldn't open....isn't that what Quickoffice is for? If not is it deletable and a better free app?

Also, I got the larger data package through AT&T but are there certain apps that burn through data so fast I would need to worry about going over?

Thanks!

It seems like QO can open some .doc files but not all of them. Try Documents to Go.

I have developed an app for tracking your live poker play, called Live Poker Tools. It tracks sessions, players, and has a hand recorder. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Live Poker Tools

Just went throught the whole thread. Thanks to all!

Lots of toys on my new Thunderbolt.

I'm going to root my Epic very soon. Does anyone know of a comprehensive FAQ or Message Board for me to read up on while preparing to do this (backing up contacts/SMS, which ROM is best for my phone, which Apps to get after, etc)?

z4rootYou're welcome. No studying needed.

Probably been said before but PDANet is the greatest thing ever.

It's working so well right now. I'm not being charged extra or anything, right?

No one (myself included) like pay apps, but I was not a big fan of the Google listen app and wanted to find something out there for my podcasts.

I found DoggCatcher and have been very happy with it. $6.99 is a little steep but worth the $ in my opinion. I also broke down and bought Power Amp, great app for all of the music I have on my phone.
I use DoggCatcher, too. Very satisfied with it for $6.99.

it's ok. rooting the phone and using barnacle or wireless tether is easier and more useful, since you don't need to have anything installed anywhere else.

A friend told me that adding any task manager will kill battery life because the built in task manager doesn't play well with others. So far, he looks to be correct: I have an extended battery and I'm at 80% after unplugging it at 9am. (Heavy user).

I just downloaded a free app called CamScanner that is awesome at taking photos of documents and turning them in to PDFs.

Reading back a couple of pages someone said they were charged $20 after a trial expired. When I downloaded it didnt say it was a trial. After 30 days will I be prompted to buy a "full version"? Is the charge a one time fee, or monthly?

Looks like I jinxed it. Its showing me as connected, the blue bubble comes up but I cannot connect to any webpages. Gives me an error, any ideas?

I never paid anything for PDANet, and used it quite a bit before switching to wireless tether and barnacle.

try out juice defender for extended battery life
juice defender doesn't seem to play well with other apps, either. it definitely extended battery life, but it basically stopped my email and calendar from syncing (exchange server). others have had similar experiences. uninstalled it and everything worked again. since it's so customizable, there's probably a way to get it to work, but I couldn't figure it out and there is a lot of discussion out there among others who had similar issues.

I still have not felt the need to mess with Juice Defender.... I am pretty sure that I physically manage much of what Juice Defender does automagically though

I still plan on checking it out at some point though.

this is pretty much true, but you may want to read up on alternative ROMS first. I know it isn't your phone, but the droidx forums have a detailed thread on rooting with z4root and preferences for setting up phones after rooting.

bump... my problem with listen is it doesn't actually download the podcast all the time, I want them to be available without 3g, listen seems to do it randomly

Re: my Evo with extended battery and Juice Defender disabled.

When using juice defender, it told me I was getting 1.2x the battery life I would be getting without JD.

I turned it off 2 days ago - yesterday I unplugged my phone at 9:30am, plugged it in for about 5 minutes around 4pm, and it finally died at 9:45pm. This is SUBSTANTIALLY better battery life then when I had JD running. Using JD usually required a plug in around 5pm.

As of this morning: I unplugged at 9:15 am and I'm at 71%. This is with GPS on, 4G, and WIFI off.

Google Activates Its 100 Millionth Android Device

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/android-activations-downloads-milestones-users,news-11135.html

Right at the beginning of yesterday’s keynote, Hugo Barra, Product Management Director for Android, gave attendees a quick recap of the kind of growth Google's mobile operating system has seen since it launched in October of 2008. Google reports that Android use has skyrocketed, jumping from 500,000 activations to 100 million worldwide activations in 2011.

This time last year, Google was clocking about 100,000 activations a day. That number doubled by the time August rolled around, and by December of 2010, Google was activating 300,000 Android devices every single day. As it stands, the company currently activates 400,000 Android devices each day.

Barra says the company’s now got 310 devices from 36 OEMs in 112 countries across 215 carriers. He also revealed that Google’s 450,000 Android developers have cranked out 200,000 available apps and these have been downloaded a total of 4.5 billion times. The first billion downloads apparently took two years to hit but the most recent billion downloads were done in the last 60 days.

I turned JD off on Monday and have had very similar results!!

+1 on CamScanner. Really works well.

The biggest problem I had with listen is when I would stop a podcast and resume later it would always be at a different spot in the podcast. I do not have that problem with DoggCatcher

WOOHOO!!!! Finally!!

Netflix app
Only for phones with SnapDragon procs apparently :( stupid hardware DRM requirements - don't bet on ever getting this except on the newer phones.
Yeah this sucks. I'd like something too manage my queue at least
have you tried "queue manager"?
Have not..though I've been waiting for an official Netflix app..well check it out, thanks!

Have been trying most of the daily free apps from Amazon. Most have been games, which can be nice time wasters, but not all that useful.

Yesterday they had FlexT9 as their free app. It's kind of a combination of Swype and Swiftkey with character recognition and some some pretty good voice recognition thrown in. It's already become my favorite input method. Pretty sweet deal for free, but I think I'd pay the $4.99 they normally ask for it. Really like this app.

You can get around this on a rooted device.
I haven't tried it yet, but I did download the APK. There have been mixed reports as to whether it'll work - most non-listed phones say that the app itself works, but the streaming does not.

for those with EVOs, they announced you can trade in and upgrade to the 3D EVO for $99 at radio shack (with a 2 year sprint renewal). I have no idea what the difference with the 3D and regular EVO (other than the 3D) though

A faster, dual core processor is the big difference, but it also has Gingerbread and the new Sense. Also a higher res screen, 1080p HD video, more onboard storage, a bigger battery, and more RAM.
