Gore seems like a bit of a steal at that price.
yup, by about $10.sucks when your plan totally differs and can't risk ending up with him by enforcing.
yea he we cheap. I thought about trying to drive the price up a bit but didn't want to risk it as there are other players I want to spend my money on.
I would take Gore over SJax, so I'd be very happy to get him for that amount. Still, tough to gauge the results until the auction is over, there may be even better deals ahead.

Dwill at $53 is an absolute steal!
Agree
shhhhhhhhhhhhhh
it's the first auction startup i've done. but based on my values, and just ranking the guys on the board based on price, there are some very strange variations.the middle of the draft should be pretty interesting.

one roster could be very very interesting if he hangs on to the top bid...
I'm assuming you are referring to a potential 3 headed monster? and yea I am having a hard time with the values myself being that this is my first auction.

ya. that one. is no one else paying attention? shocking.he hangs out here on occasion. so if he sees this thread, i'd welcome his thoughts and comments.

I'm guessing this is my team. Both of the RBs were at a cheap price, and with me over-paying for CJ, I wanted to raise the prices of the other RBs in the same tier. So basically, my strategy was raising the bid but to a price that I wouldnt mind paying (even it will cripple the rest of my team). This is also my first auction, so I'm not sure if this was really dumb.

I'm not sure if having CJ3, Rice and MJD all on the same team is ever a dumb thing.

Hey! Welcome to the party! It was your team we were talkin about.

My assumption was that you were price enforcing while not getting caught with your pants down. Based on your not rebidding on MJD.

But man, that's a strategy I've always wanted to try. Especially with there being a solid #1, and three indistinguishable #2s. Hell, why not go nail three of the top 4 RBs?

You didn't even overpay for CJ3. And had you hung on to those bids, you would have got both at value. Amazing.

But I guess we won't get to see that strategy play out.

And no. Having those three on your team can't be dumb. However, I'd be surprised if anyone did such a thing and didn't move one of them before the season started.

man, that sucks. hopefully someone will rescue you.
Well at least I didn't bid 80 bucks on Matt Leinart.... I realized I could lower my proxy bid back down again, so not as bad as I though.
How do you do this?I'm likign ym team so far, I feel that Sproles and Addai were both bargains compatitive to PPR value. Especially Sproles. $40 for a RB1 in this format? I'm down.

Also I'm quite pleased with my "toss out DeSean and Calvin" strategy.

even with KR, I valued DeSean at 50 or so, and he went for what, 71?

Calvin went for almost $100 iirc, and I think he's dastically overvalued. Nice to keep on tossing out guys I don't want and continue to wait until everyone spends their cash on people I don't want.

Although I seem to be price enforcing a lot, and I have a feeling it bites me in the ### today. Gotta quit doing that lol.

If you have a bid of like 30 dollars with an 80 proxy bid put in for someone, then just change the bid to 31 dollars. I mistakenly bid on Marion Barber, I did not really want him at all but at least it wasn't an expensive mistake really. I was throwing in some bids while watching TV and I had all the bids one off, but luckily the rest of the bids were on players I actually wanted. Sproles is a good bargain yes. Addai I am not as high on because his future is very unclear after this year. I really was not expecting to get Big Ben. When I saw Brees go for 70+, I assumed that Ben even with his issues would go for at least 30. He wasn't really the QB I was targeting but at 21 dollars I am happy with the risk involved with him. Not as happy though when I saw Romo go for 25.....

Thats been my strategy as well, throwing out guys who I think would be high dollar auctions who I had no interest in. I don't like Desean at that price but Calvin I would have probably gone up to around 100 on had I not already won other players. I wasn't expecting to win VJax at the price I did to be honest. I didn't think there was a $30 difference between him and AJohnson.

and did i miss something. did Michale Turner die? is that why no one was trying to top my ultra-low high bid?

i mean, it's a PPR league and all...but damn.

Sproles, Darren SDC $41
:excited:
Ok, the return yards make more sense but it's still too much IMO and I like the guy. Leon Washington should go for a lot then as well.
Sproles is an RB1. I think he actually sees more touches while they work in a rookie, and since many of his touches are receptions and it is PPR, I like it. I got a top 12 RB for half the cost of all the other top 12 RBs. Who's laughing now? xD
Dez Bryant went for more than Jennings, VJax, Wayne and Colston. You have got to be kidding me.
yup yup. would have gone for more than Marshall too if someone hadn't bumped marshall at the last minute.
Me bumping last minute or the guy bumping me at the last minute? I was pissed off. I had Roddy and Marshall totaling about $100 with 8 mins or so left and somebody bid them up. Like, you weren't here in the past 11 hours 52 minutes to do that? And now I have to re-up and wait another 12 freakin hours? GEEZ.

i dunno who bumped Marshall, but ya...there were only a few minutes left on the clock. check your email and see who outbid you. return the favor. j/k.

Oh I did. And that one finally ended. Rice/Smith/Marshall looks to be lethal for the next 7 years or so. With Rivers at QB I am really in love with my current situation. Just wish PT hadn't got bid up so much.

Dang Dez @ 71.00 is a pretty bold move. He has no wiggle room but to come in and be lights out for that price.

Makes me wonder will be be valued as a top 10 dynasty wr from get go once the dynasty rankings roll out??

maybe in someone's rankings he will be, but for me i can think of 10 WRs I'd rather have.but it's close. i have him at WR13.

I'll make my usual comment, which is that veterans are under-rated in dynasty start-up drafts. Whoever got Clinton Portis for $1, Donald Driver for $4, LT2 for $3, Ricky Williams for $2, Carson Palmer for $2, Cadillac for $2 etc got real steals.

Agreed. I have never done an auction league and just decided to jot down a team as I went down that list (although I'm sure the guys who did this draft would tell me, hindsight is 20/20). I didn't see this post yet, but I, too, was shocked to see Palmer for $2. Larry Johnson wasn't listed so I figured I could theoretically grab him for a dollar or two.My uber quick dream team from this draft:QB: Flacco (20), Ryan (17), Henne (9), Palmer (2)WR: S.Smith - Carolina (37), Ochocinco (25), Maclin (33), Holmes (26), Avery (15), Aromashodu (9), Santana Moss (1)RB: Mendenhall (67), Turner (40), Benson (22), Lynch (16), Maroney (10), M.Bush (7), J.Davis (7), B.Scott (7), Hilliard (1), Portis (1), LJ (1)TE: Daniels (16), Olsen (4)D: Pitt (6)Just realized I forgot a kicker. I scribbled that down in like 2 minutes and was lucky it came out so close. Only had to scratch off James Jones to make it work. What kind of lineups are optimal for a 25 man roster dynasty league? 3QB, 8WR, 8RB, 3TE, 1K, 2D? I always have a RB heavy tendency, but it seemed like there was a lot of late value in this one. Lynch, Maroney, M.Bush, J.Davis, B.Scott, Hilliard all have a chance to be very productive in the future. Portis and LJ for $2-$3 is basically a free starting RB for 2010. Olsen is screwed this year, but one must think he'll one day be very good somewhere, right? I can't imagine paying 25% of my budget on one guy. Then again, I've always enjoyed the middle rounds of traditional drafts more than the first few.
Not trying to knock your effort here, but I can't see the team you selected being anything more than average, both in the near term and long term. I do agree that there are some great values among some vets, but I think you'd need a lineup with a little more star power than the one you've selected as the "dream team."

Some thoughts about my team... Prices paid in parenthesis

QB

Big Ben (21)

Bradford (15)

Orton (1)

Considering it is a 4 pt TD league for QB's, I didn't place as high of a value on QB's. My auction inexperience hurt me here as well. When I saw Brees and Rodgers go for around $70, I figured Big Ben at 21 was a great deal. I had no idea I could have had Eli Manning later for like $11 or some of the other QB in that range. Overall I am happy with the position though.

RB

DeAngelo Williams (53)

CJ Spiller (52)

Marion Barber (17)

LeGarrette Blount (1)

With the fact that only 1 RB is required to start I decided to go light at RB and load up at WR. I felt DeAngelo was a very good buy at $53. Barber was a guy I accidently bid on, but he wasn't too much so I am not upset with that really. I paid around $50 for Spiller, but considering this is a PPR which gives return yardage points, I think that is a relatively safe investment with high upside.

WR

Vincent Jackson (68)

Hakeem Nicks (65)

Steve Smith CAR (37)

Devin Thomas (19)

Chaz Schilens (10)

Antonio Bryant (5)

Jacoby Jones (5)

Brandon Tate (4)

Danny Amendola (4)

Louis Murphy (3)

Chris Chambers (1)

Derrick Mason (1)

I spent the bulk of my money here. Considering we can start up to 6 WR's, I am happy with this group. Have a good top 3 who will produce good numbers, followed by a nice mix of cheap veterans to hold the fort until some of younger upside WR's hopefully develop. Also, with this being a return yardage league, Jones and Amendola have more value. In hindsight I overpaid for Nicks I think, but I wanted to get another WR from his tier or better and they dried up faster than I expected.

TE

Zack Miller OAK (10)

Jimmy Graham (1)

I knew I was going cheap on TE and Miller is the guy I targeted all along.

DEF

Green Bay Packers (3)

My favorite dynasty defense to target. Lots of good young talent and a scheme that produces sacks and turnovers. Happy with them as my D.

Overall I am happy with my team. Considering it was my first auction I made plenty of mistakes but I feel I have a team that is competitive. My QB situation is shaky at the moment but that can be addressed. It was a fun process for sure.

I see what you guys are thinking up there...but getting a Larry Johnson for $1 is onyl a steal if you think he has any production left. In a league where I'll start a max of 3 RBs on any given week, and they'll all catch passes, LJ wouldn't see my lineup over a middle level WR. So he'd be a waste of my cash. That said, here's how I built my team:

Moore, Matt CAR QB - 10

Rivers, Philip SDC QB - 41

Brian Hoyer NE QB- 1

On QB, I went for a guy that I thought would be an absolute stud for a long time. There were two QBs I would have paid 55 for - Rivers and Rodgers. Getting my #2 QB for around $30 less than more than one other guy is amazing value IMO, and am amazed he went at this price. Moore is a kid I think will do very well for the next few years, potential starter, great backup with upside for trade potential down the road, a is Hoyer in NE.

Addai, Joseph IND RB - 31

Hightower, Tim ARI RB - 14

Sproles, Darren SDC RB - 41

Lynell Hamilton NO RB - 2

PPR, so I grabbed some cheaper RBs that I knew would score well. Lots of Flex power, I believe only 1 RB required. In a dynasty, building around your receivers gives you longevity, and you can deal with RB on an almost weekly basis. I didn't get any of the big 4 for $100, so this was my plan. Sproles is RB10 the past couple years, and I am very happy to get him at half the cost of the other RB1 guys. Addai and Hightower both catch lots of passes. Not much else I can ask for. Hamilton could be a nice piece for a few years if NO doesn;t draft/sign anyone.

Cribbs, Josh CLE WR - 4

Jones, James GBP WR - 10

Marshall, Brandon MIA WR - 76

Ochocinco, Chad CIN WR - 25

Rice, Sidney MIN WR - 61

Robinson, Laurent STL WR - 3

Smith, Steve NYG WR - 55

Stroughter, Sammie TBB WR - 3

Dwayne Jarret, Wallace Wright, Kenneth Moore - $1 each, WR CAR

This is where I spent my money. Rice, Smith, Marshall are all top 15 guys in PPR Dynasty, IMO, and I went after them hard, along with Roddy White--who ended up last in a tier and went for quite a bit more than he was worth, IMO... So I have a team with the keys to dynasty success, top WRs and a top 3 QB.

James Jones could be the #2 in GB by the end of this year, Ocho has another year or two, maybe even 3 or 4 in him, and at that price I couldn't resist going a little win-now mode. LRob could be the #1 in STL, and looked good last season. Stroughter the same in TB. Cribbs is a big boost in return yardage, but I figure longevity is lacking---so I said up to $5 as a limit...and got him for 4.

Then I took the CAR #2 receiver, if they don't draft anybody. If they do, well I took $3, and burned it. Oh well.

Davis, Fred WAS TE - 5

Miller, Zach JAC TE - 3

Nelson, Shawn BUF TE - 4

I couldn't get any of the young guys b/c one dude took 4 top TEs in hopes of trading. This took me down a route I have used successfully to get guys like Finley early---I take the best potential young guys and just blow the position for a couple years, unless one hits a light right away. Miller could be the next Dallas Clark, same with Nelson, and Davis looked really sharp last year.

DEF

Cincinnatti and Arizona

I relly like them both, but I got caught trying to bid someone up on Cincy and spent $4. In the end it didn't mean much, but I hadn't planned on taking them.

Overall, my strategy was to get a tip top QB, and then build around recievers and pick up value when I thought I saw it at RB. In Dynasty, RBs change much more year to year than WRs...for instance, if I'd had this team and picked up Charles/Harrison last season in some cheap trades, or potentially waivers, then I'd have most likely won the championship (did in one league with exactly that scenario).

Surprise RBs come around often due to injuries and the nature of that position. So grab some KR value and pass catchers for those extra flex spots, and try to fill up on top wideouts. Or, that was my goal. Should be the best WR lineup in the league thsi year, and maybe for a few down the road.

What was the format for your auction draft as far as time requirements and how the bidding worked?

Our auction draft started a week prior to yours and you still finished much earlier. We are still going.

I was wondering what time limits you used. Next year I will be commishing my own auction league and would like to develop some best practices / good ideas.

Our format was:

$400 - 22 players

24 hours time limit - resets every time a new high bidder takes over (This is what made our draft take forever)

Did you have a fixed time limit (24 hours, no resetting)

The positive with a format like that is it doesn't take as long. The negative is someone might start an auction at 3 am hoping to have few bidders when their players go.

Your thoughts and advice is appreciated.

It was a 12 hour timer instead of a 24. Still reset every time a new high bidder took over. I felt 12 hours was perfect, because even if a player nominated someone at midnight, there was plenty of time for everyone to get in there and check before the bid was won.
