Directv NFL Ticket.... (1 Viewer)

Just made my yearly call. I've been a DirecTV customer for 3 or 4 years, I have pretty much the cheapest TV package possible (they don't even advertise it on the website), and I've been out of contract ever since my initial 2-year version expired. Total monthly price for equipment and programming is $75 + tax. I called Dish first to get some price quotes just so I'd be armed with some knowledge if it came to that, and the best I got was about $65 + tax for the next two years for Redzone and all of my current channels.

I called DirecTV, asked for customer retention, and told them I was trying to get my monthly payment as low as possible and was comparing prices with other providers. They transferred me immediately to the Loyal Customer department, where I told them again that I was comparing prices trying to get my monthly bill as low as possible. They led off by increasing my channels to the Entertainment package (the smallest one they advertise online, but a step up from what I had), and applied enough credits to still get my bill down to $58 + tax for the next year. I said that sounded good, but I was also a football fan, and wanted to know how much extra it would be to add Sunday Ticket or just Redzone as a standalone. They immediately offered Sunday Ticket and Redzone for free with a 1-year contract, which I immediately accepted.

Including transferring between departments, the call took 11 minutes from send to end. Total price walking out the door- $58 + tax for all of my equipment, channels, and Sunday Ticket/Redzone. That's basically the same deal new customers get, except I only had to sign a 1-year contract, so I didn't have to mortgage my bargaining power for next year. I don't know if I just get lucky or if my strategy (call other providers, get some price quotes, lead off by saying I want to get my payment as low as possible, only mention football halfway through) happens to be a good one, but so far I've managed to avoid any of the nightmare calls some people in this thread are reporting.

Just called, currently under contract, already have several credits so knew there was little they would offer. Best deal was $150 for Sunday Ticket. I brought up the Amazon $100 Madden purchase that gets you free ST and he agreed that was the better deal at this time. Said (and most of us know this) the closer we get to the season the better the deals will be. So nothing done at this time.
Just making sure I get this right... I pre-order Madden and I get ST streaming on my computer without paying some extra premium? $100 gets me the games I want and I can resell the Madden when I'm done? I am seeing precisely zero downside, making me think there's a catch somewhere that I'm missing....
No catch. But if you look I called back about 2 weeks later and ended up getting ST Max for FREE. Just keep trying. The Madden thing is a worst case scenario but I wouldn't settle for that.
But I'm not a DirecTV subscriber as it is. I already ragequit cable and am going the Netflix/Hulu route. NFL is the only downside to this equation, but if I can get my football (even more football than I could get previously) in addition without having to pay for the Oxygen Channel as well, I'm in.
So, I read the fine print on Amazon, and it looks like there is a catch that people weren't talking about on this. Here's what I got:

  • For fans who are not currently DirecTV subscribers but are able to receive DirecTV service, they will receive a promo code entitling them to $10 off per month for their first year of service and one year of NFL Sunday Ticket Max at no additional charge.
  • For fans who are already DirecTV and NFL Sunday Ticket Max subscribers, you can access NFL Sunday Ticket on your computer, tablet, and mobile devices using your current DirecTV username and password.
  • For fans unable to receive DirecTV service, each Madden NFL 25 Anniversary Edition will include a unique code to access the 2013 regular season (17 weeks) trial of NFL Sunday Ticket on computers, tablets, and mobile devices- including access to the award-winning Red Zone Channel.
So since I'm not a DirecTV subscriber but -can- get it if I wanted, then I guess I end up with option 1. That seems fairly unappealing to me. I don't want to subscribe to a service as I'm happy with just going the Netflix/Hulu route. (Plus, Magnum P I is so old it's new again.) So is there a way to fake it so I get option #3? Or should I just go with the Verizon package on my phone and forget the DirecTV angle?
There is an answer from an Amazon verified rep on the page where he verifies that even if you CAN get DirectTV you don't HAVE to get it to redeem the code. I posted the answer here in the FFA:

Made my call an hour ago. Asked them how much I'd have to pay if I was to leave before my 2yr agreement? (I already knew it was $20 a month) I was asked why I wanted to know? I stated that Dish would pay the remaining balance plus I'd have the hopper, a lower monthly payment, the redzone channel and the Ipad 2.

I received:

Sunday Ticket: free

Genie whole home dvr: free

Install: free

$20 off my bill for 12 months:

Not too bad. I didn't want to push much more plus I'm happy with this.
Just got off the phone with them and used your post as a blueprint.

I received:

Sunday Ticket Max Free

Genie Whole Home DVR Free with instillation.

$15 off my bill for 12 months

$30 additional off my bill per month if I call them in two months to extend a discount I received last year.

Nearly 20 years with DTV and boy do I say that a ton during these calls.

Talked about how new customers AGAIN are getting ST free and how a kid that buys a game and has never sent them a dollar can see the games for free as well.

:thanks:

:white star

I just noticed I am getting billed the $37.49 per month for the ticket. I wasn't expecting that since it was free last year (new customer in 2012). Guess I have to make a call. I really only want Red Zone though - can I get Red Zone without the ticket?

Yes, but they might tell you no. They're capable of doing it, but sometimes they pretend that they aren't.

Yes, I had the same conditions and got free Redzone with some bucks off.

Thanks for the info. I was trying to figure it out on my account page, but I don't see Redzone listed in any of the packages.
When I called I went straight to cancel and told them it is because I wanted RedZone but didn't want to pay for all the other Sunday Ticket. Said I could get that on cable.

I hear you but there is a part of me that just despises having to call up and threaten to cancel.
FWIW, I did not threaten to cancel. In fact, I was completely honest with the guy. I said:

"I'll be honest, I actually really enjoy my Directv service and don't want to cancel. I'm just hoping you can help me get Sunday Ticket for free and save me some money on my monthly statement."

He was thankful that I was honest and direct with him, the call took all of 3 minutes and I got Sunday Ticket MAX for free, the $100 Visa gift card and Encore./Starz free for 6 months. Not as much as some others on here, I admit, but really I just wanted the Ticket. And, as I mentioned above, he told me to call back in a month or so and ask for a monthly discount which I sincerely appreciated. Will be interesting to see how it works.

The point here being, you don't necessarily have to play the "I'm gonna cancel!" threat game.
This didn't work for me, the lady said she can get me into a smaller package and give me HD access free for 6 months. I told her I would call back.

Looks like Dish has sold me on their packages + free IPAD 2.

Really digging the sports packages with redzone and I can still get center ice but the guy told me I probably won't need it with the sports package since they don't black their games out. (unless the NHL blacks them out)

All of this for only 11/month

Oh well, if DTV just gave me their ST for free I wouldn't even looked at Dish.

Got Sunday Ticket max for $100

$15 credit for 15 months

$10 credit for 24 months

Free Genie Upgrade

Free Installation on Genie

Starz for 3 months

Showtime for 4 months.

Made my call yesterday.... Subscriber since '96. I needed a new receiver and with new Fiber-optic cable in the neighborhood, had an offer for $300 from AT&T to go to U-verse.

Free Genie (http://www.directv.com/technology/genie?lpos=Header:3) - $299 value to existing cutomers (has picture in picture - I can get rid of one receiver - additional $6/mo savings)

Free Genie mini - $99 value

Free Cinema Connection kit - $99 value (allows me to connect receivers to internet through DirecTV cable instead of my current method of through the electrical system (very slow)

$10/month off my Sports Pack for 6 months

$50 credit

Sunday Ticket Max for $150 (savings of $150)

Total savings plus whole house DVR which allows the wife to watch her programs in her room: $820

Had to go with 2 year commitment. Totally worth it.
Not a package post per se, but I did want to throw this out there - if you can get the Genie it's worth it just for the PiP. It's incredibly difficult to get PiP on a TV anymore (High end Samsung TV's have it) and it requires a separate tuner.

Though my call was extremely easy this year and went flawlessly when we agreed upon the outcome, the lady I was speaking with had some major issues when trying to get this all entered and through their system so a 20 minute call turned into an hour. Other than that, she was extremely helpful and seemingly handing out the goods.

- $20 credit for 12 months

- $10 credit for 12 months

- $15 credit for 15 months (offsets the ST Max charges)

- $37.50 charge for 6 months for ST Max (offset by the $15 for 15 months credit)

- Free genie, mini-genie, and installation

Basicaly the net is free ST Max, an average monthly credit of $30, and free installed genie and mini-genie. The free equipment resulted in a 2 year contract agreement, but I'm not too worried about that at this point in time.

Just got off the phone with retention. All I did was mention Dish's latest offer and the fact that we love ST but can't afford it. Rep immediately came back with:

$40/month credits for 1 year.

ST Max free.

Offered totally free Genie (free equipment for 3 TVs and free installation) - but held off on that since that would mean a 2 year commitment.

DONE

i called over a month ago, I was out of contract at the time. I just told them the DTV bill was way too high (which it was) and that I needed to lower it.... they offered $30 bill credits for a year provided i sign a one year agreement.... As cool as the genie and all that stuff owuld be, i didnt want to be locked in to a 2 year agreement. so I took the one year offer... i then asked about ticket max, was told $150... I said no asked for red zone only... initially they said no... then without too much effort asked again and they gave me redzone for free.... I'm happy with it

Ive spent the last hour researching comcast and dish offers......they are sooo much more money than direct tv. I guess when I call I will have to lie :)

You don't really need to go that route. Just tell them you like DTV but the wife says you need cheaper, and ask what they can do for ya to keep her happy and to keep you as a customer...then mention Sunday Ticket/Red Zone (and movie channels if you want those too) after you start getting offered discounts. Tell them ST/RZ would seal the deal. If they don't budge mention that they give new customers the world, and you'd stick with them if they give you some of that action.Easy peasy, Japanesey. Good luck!

Ticket Max free,

free- Genie, 2 minis, install,

total of 25$ a month off,

1 year agreement

Don't let them send you to the NFL department, they got nothing for ya, go right to customer retention.

I was able to get the following:

- Free Genie w/ minis and installation

- Visa $100 giftcard

- Sunday Ticket MAX for $97 (offset by the free gift card)

- Free 6 mos Starz, Showtime & Encore

However during the completion of the call they transferred me to the department which records your agreement to the two year committment. I was holding for a good 5 min and then had to go to a meeting so I hung up. Will this negate the deal? I checked my account on the site and the credits were all applied and my free installation is scheduled in the system. Just don't want to call back if I don't have too ;)

My angle: always be nice, honest, & ask what they can offer you as a longtime customer. "I need to lower my bill," is usually thrown in there.

Made the annual call, have rec'd ST Max for free for the past two years basically just asking for it. They always offer monthly discounts/free programming to good/longstanding customers.

DTV customer since 1999. Currently under contract through 2014, receiving $20/month credits from last year's phone call, AND reduced HBO price, free Showtime for 3 months, & Starz for 6 months (wife always calls for a deal while "True Blood" is airing.) So not as much bargaining power as some of y'all. I called & said "Cancel Service" at the prompt to get the retention dept. (I actually did need to cancel HBO). Very polite/cheerful specialist answered & asked how she could help. I said I needed to cancel HBO, & last year's $20/month credits were ending and what was available this year.

She began with two $10/month credits ($20/month total) for 12 months. I said that would be great, & what would be available to me this year for Sunday Ticket. She said since I rec'd it at no charge last year, she couldn't offer it free but could do ST Max for $36.99 for 4 months. I said I couldn't do that. So I asked about Red Zone Channel as a standalone. She put me on hold & came back with RZC only at no cost, but no ST.

I confirmed that both the $20/mo credits & RZC were on the table, she said they were. Then she offered me ST Max again, this time saying she'd eliminate the first installment of $36.99 (so basically ST Max for $100), and would increase one of the monthly credits to $15/month. I went with free RZC & discounts, because that's mainly what I wanted, and didn't want to increase my bill, even for only 3 months. She told me she'd note the other offer in my account in case I changed my mind.

I told her I was really grateful for her help & asked to speak to her supervisor to give her some praise.

TOTAL DEAL:

  • Free Red Zone Channel
  • $20/month off bill for next 12 months
I may call back tomorrow & get them to switch it to offer #2

  • ST Max - $36.99 in three installments
  • $25/month off bill for next 12 months

Well, DirecTV won't pass on a discount to me. They were rude and will be losing a customer as result.

I guess I'll just go to my friends place and watch for free!

If you don't get any good offers, just call back later and get a different rep...a couple years ago I had to call 3 times before I got a good deal....persistance pays off.

I think is all in how you talk to them and write down what is being said for reference. We are on the go and had ST MAX free last year being new customer. Told them we dont watch a lot of tv and with everything we have going on even last year I watched a handful of games and mostly just red zone. After listening for about 10mins I told them is just not worth how little tv we watch. So she asked to make me a final offer(have 10 months left on contract):

1 time $50 credit

$15 credit for 15 months

$10 credit for 6 months

free Starz for 3 months

free showtime for 6 months

free NFL Red Zone

so our bill will be $7 cheaper than now for next 6 months(was going to pay $200 disconnect fee/in Feb that will drop to $80) and I get red zone and no additional commitment. Yeah will take that

Just called and my agreement isn't up until October 2014. I had ST last year and paid almost full price but didn't get it this year. I would like to have ST and the Genie Whole Home DVR for FREE.

Is that possible? at worst Id like to have Redzone channel with the Genie for FREE

Who do I speak with when I call and what do I say to make the above happen? Thanks

first guy i spoke to said that he saw i got nfl ticket for free last year :o

he offered me the following:

$35 off for 15 months

2 months of hbo, startz, etc

50% off Sunday Ticket Max

I said I'd called back which i did and the next guy had all the same info so i was at a crossroads. I went ahead with the deal. Essentially the $35 discount gets eaten by the Ticket Max for the 4 months and then the remaining 11 months of discounts kicks in.

not the slam dunk deal i got last year but still good. i could have gotten more but i'm out of contract and didn't want to resign to get the genie at this point.

On the phone now. 8 year customer, called 2 years and got a deal but didn't call last year.

Here is what I got:

$20/month loyalty discount

$15/month discount for 15 months as a "VIP" customer

Free NFL Ticket

Free Redzone Chanel

Free Genie including installation fee waived

Agreed to a 2 year contract.

:moneybag:

This was my 2nd year of the call...I think it is important to be very friendly, call the rep by name

Last year I called retention and asked how much it was caused to cancel service...after a minute or two they will get around to asking you why you want to cancel...here is where you tell them you love, their service has been Outstanding with Directv but Comcast/Dish (whichever) you can get the red zone channel by itself, and that is the only football channel I watch...after this she offered Me Red Zone Channel for Free (no contract ext)...I gratefully accepted

This year my contract was up. So I made the same call as above, the guy was really into the NFL and I asked for RedZone channel only but he actually pushed me to take the whole SundayTicket Max (1 year ext, so what not going anywhere soon)...plus a $50 credit and $20 loyalty discount for 12 Mos

I don't agree with those calling and using the "Hey new customers get it so give it to me dammit"...not too smart..

Hope this helps

so I followed this approach exactly for my home account and received the Sunday Ticket Max for free and $10 off for 3 months. :)

Pretty much everyone else got a much better deal than you, so i guess it depends on how you define smart. Ticket Max is over $300 and most of us got it for free, plus discounts.

You have to talk to retention- its their job to keep you as a customer. Its everybody elses job to sell you NFL Ticket. Who do you think has more incentive to get you what you want?

Right. It's important when they ask why you are calling to say to cancel your service. It's a game. Play it.

Just called today. I have been a long time directv subscriber but have not had the Sunday ticket for at least five years or so. I just inquired that I'm looking to possibly decrease my current package for cost reasons (I also mentioned I'm a football fan).

The gal set me up with NFL Sunday ticket and Redzone FREE!! plus $20 off my monthly bill for a 1 year subscription. She was very nice and accommodating with no questions asked. It was very easy and I am veeery pleased!

I just got off the phone. I have always had the premiere package, and I've been a customer since 2008. I might have gone a different route than most, but just called the number and said reduce my programming at the prompt. I told the lady I was looking to lower my bill and wanted to switch to the choice package and keep HBO and Showtime (wife is on season 3 of Dexter on demand). She offered me $35 off a month, and then I inquired about the Sunday Ticket. She said that she doesn't have any deals on the Sunday Ticket, but the retention department probably does and transfered me. The lady asked me what I was looking for, and I said I want the Sunday Ticket but just can't afford it right now. She offered me the Sunday Ticket Max for 35.99 for 4 months. I said I'd pass, and she put me on hold for a minute. Came back with the Ticket Max at the same price, but an addition $35 off based on my other programming. She also offered the genie for free if I signed a contract, but I couldn't get the install for free so I said I really wouldn't use it.

Don't be afraid to call and say 'cancel' next time.

I just called. I was able to get Sunday Ticket Max for 50% plus a $30 credit for 12 months. I was able to get the Genie (plus install) for free if I sign a two year contract. Signing for two years would not let me bargain for discounts next year. All of you guys who got the genie, did you need to sign on for two years?

I told them I needed to think about it, and give them a call back.

Any time they give you something it means your stuck in contract another two years.

I cancelled my service few years back and put it in my fiances name to get a hella deal right before the season.

Last year called and said how I think its unfair customers who have not been paying a monthly bill get it for free yet I have to pay. They mentioned that I already got a deal, still was upset they gave it to me. This year my contract was up, simply asked what are you gonna do to keep me.

They gave me genie upgrade for every room, Sunday Ticket Max, all channels and first 3 months free of bill pay.

If you have auto bill pay, they will give you what u ask, especially if you want to go elsewhere.

I cancelled and set up my new service conveniently before football season so I have to put up a fight every other year, because they will give u ST just to stay with them if your contract runs out after every two.

Yes I did. I made my call and got Sunday Ticket and Genie for free and free install. I signed a 2 year agreement. I still had another year one my contract when I called and it would have cost me $260 to cancel but told them Dish would pay that for me for switching over to them. I will do the same next year when I call about the Sunday Ticket. I really needed the Genie is why I signed and didn't want the hopper from Dish

They gave me the discounts without the two year commitment. I am assuming the new equipment might require the two contract.

I ve been calling every year and got to it a little late last year. I ve called this year and the lady said there Aren't many discounts coming up because I still have existing discounts associated with the account which don't expire until late sept. anyone else deal with this/work around this?

As stated above, the key is getting to the "Retention" department, which I think the only way you can is by stating you want to cancel your service at the voice prompts (during my first call this year, I said I wanted to "Change Programming" and when I explained I "couldn't afford ST this year," she happily obliged and cancelled it for me!)

Called 2 days later, asked if I was under contract, and said my wife wanted us to explore Dish since her friends all switched to Dish. Explained that ST was the reason we switched to them in the first place. She responded "why didn't you call and ask us about deals for loyal customers instead of calling Dish?" She proceeded to give me ST free, and $45/month off my service.

She also gave me the tip to call again next year, get the retention department "since we can give the best deals" and ask for special deals/offers.

Hope that helps!

Made several calls, researching what Dish and other local cable providers could offer. I got:

$15 off bill for 15 months

$20 off my bill for 12 months

Free Showtime for 6 months

$5 off HBO of 6 months (I already have this)

Free Sunday Ticket Max

Just made the annual call. Been with them since 2005. Been calling this time each year, for years. I've never had an issue until last year about getting any discounts for ST or STfor free.

I explained to the woman my wife has a few friends that had gotten dish network and I quoted her dish prices. Said we just had our second child and we need to lower the bill. I explained my wife is bent for lowering the monthly price. I said I am with DTV for SundayTicket Max. She put me on hold and came back and said the best that she can do is take $11 off the price for six months. So, savings of $66.

I explained to her that my wife would never have that after seeing the quote for dish network. The woman said that's all they can do. I left it with talking to my wife and giving her the prices on both providers. The woman just said okay talk to you soon goodbye.

About a month ago I got a similar offer and called back a few days later with same offer. I decided to wait until now to call and see if that was enough time to give to get a bigger discount. No dice. Not sure how you guys are getting it for free or nice discounts. Pretty frustrating .

i feel your pain bill bates. i just made 3rd call a few minutes ago. previous 2 i got nowhere.

i said cancel service at the prompt, and again at the verifying prompt.

explained to rashonda that i like directv and have been with them 10+ years, but we really need to get the bill down some and dish was providing a free hopper and comparable channels, plus free lifetime hd, premium channels and free redzone. explained i knew i was in a contract for another 1+ years but really weighing switching right now because it still would be a big savings even after the cancelation penalty.

she advised there really wasn't much available at this present time, but that is always changing. she said if i enrolled in paperless billing she could take $5 off and took another $5 off showtime.

i asked her if there was any specials for sunday ticket and she said if i agreed to a year contract she would give me free sunday ticket and redzone and since i was already under a contract it would not add anything to my time.

so i received free sunday ticket and redzone plus $10 off monthly bill for 6 months.

not the deals i see in here but i am glad for the ticket this year.

i had the exact carbon copy phone call. Except when I sensed it was going nowhere but the $10 off the ticket, since I am not under contract I asked if I agree to a year contract would that change anything. She said no.

I wonder how many calls they get in August/September from younger males explaining how their wife is suddenly trying to reduce the TV bill. I think they know what's going on with that one by now. I just tell them that I want my yearly discounts and haggle from there.

I have noticed, over the years, that calling early seems to make life easier. They must get swamped with the same calls this close to the season.

But AGAIN- GO RIGHT TO RETENTION. Cant stress this enough. You will NOT get these kinds of deals from anyone but the people who can cancel your service. No-one else has authorization. If the retention person you talk to doesn't get you the ticket for free (and probably Max and some discounts as well), say you will think about it and call back to talk to someone else in retention. You WILL get the deal, but it might take a couple calls.

You have to understand- retention workers get rewarded for keeping you as a customer. Everybody else gets rewarded for making sure you pay for add ons like ST. Most of the people in retention WANT to help you, and they will. If you get a bad apple, dont sweat it, just call right back and talk to someone else in retention.
