2024 Outlook for Ravens RBs - Does the arrival of King Henry signal the end of the perpetual RBBC ? (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Ray Rice will avoid trial on assault charges after being accepted into a pretrial-intervention program.

The charges against Rice will be formally dropped upon completion of the program. The arrest will remain on his record, but without a conviction. It's the best-case scenario after Rice was caught on film dragging his fiancée (and now wife) by her hair through an Atlantic City casino after allegedly knocking her out. Rice is still facing a potential league suspension, but it's unlikely to be lengthy.

Former NFL counsel David Cornwell believes Ray Rice could still face a suspension despite avoiding trial on assault charges.

Rice can argue that he's a first-time offender of the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy and his charges will be formally dropped once he completes an intervention program. But Cary Williams was suspended two games during the 2010 season for a domestic incident and Fabian Washington got one game in 2008 for the same issue. Both former Ravens had clean sheets previously, and neither had an ugly video posted on TMZ a la Rice. A one- to two-game ban is in play for tarnishing the shield.

Ray Rice - RB - Ravens

ESPN's Chris Mortensen indicated on NFL Insiders Thursday that Ray Rice is likely to face a league-imposed suspension following his assault charge.

Rice avoided trial and is a first-time offender of the Personal Conduct Policy, but the NFL has suspended players for similar incidents. "He's gonna miss some time," said Mortensen. "The Ravens anticipate he's gonna miss some time." Say Rice is suspended for the first two games of 2014; it would give another running back (Bernard Pierce, Lorenzo Taliaferro?) the opportunity to run away with the feature back job in OC Gary Kubiak's run-heavy offense.

Lorenzo Taliaferro - RB - Ravens

Ravens coach John Harbaugh deemed fourth-round RB Lorenzo Taliaferro "very good at pass protection" following rookie minicamp.

Taliaferro's landing spot offers a lot of opportunity with questions surrounding Ray Rice (off field) and Bernard Pierce (shoulder). Pass pro is typically a major obstacle for rookie running backs. "I thought Lorenzo was very smooth running the ball," Harbaugh said. "He did a nice job picking up the aiming points and the reads. He looks like he is a big guy, a downhill guy. I was very impressed with what kind of shape he is in. There is not an ounce of fat on him, and he is 230 pounds. Very good at pass protection." Taliaferro is worth monitoring in re-draft leagues and drafting in Dynasty settings.

The Baltimore Sun confirms the Ravens are "bracing for a potential multi-game suspension" for Ray Rice.
Rice is expected to meet "soon" with Roger Goodell. "The commissioner is going to decide that," said Ravens president **** Cass. "I'm going to leave it to the commissioner." The precedent for incidents like Rice's assault of now-wife Janay Palmer is 1-2 games, but Goodell tends to increase punishments "for higher-profile incidents." Per the Sun, Rice has shed 20 pounds and is down to 205 after the Ravens felt his conditioning was a 2013 problem.

Whoops!

Ravens draft pick, ex-Bruton star Lorenzo Taliaferro arrested in Williamsburg
WILLIAMSBURG - Lorenzo Taliaferro, who two weeks was drafted by the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, was arrested early Saturday morning and charged breaking a window in a taxi cab. According to Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department, officer J.A. Wagner was on patrol in the 400 block of Richmond Road about 1:15 a.m. and saw the incident take place. Wagner observed a group near the College Delly get into a cab. The taxi lurched forward, then the group got out. The officer said he heard yelling and cursing among the group. The cab driver motioned to Wagner, and told that a member of the group whom he identified as Taliaferro, gripped the window and broke it. According to police Taliaferro left the scene, but was located about a block away. He was charged with being drunk in public and destruction of property, both misdemeanors.

Ray Lewis isn't there to help these guys get away with their crimes. Maybe the Ravens should bring him in as a coach/consultant.

i know that was tongue in cheek, but I have thought the same thing as far as his influence went. Lewis was a a big brother to a lot of these guys.

It was. I dislike Ray Lewis because of how the media treats him. It makes me cringe every time I see people praising him. I don't know how people can just ignore the whole murder situation he was involved in. If Hernandez was found not guilty and he returned to football and talked about god a lot and was positive in the locker room, would people love him and praise him too?

To his credit though, he really did change his life afterwards. That's another reason why I think he was guilty, but that's not important for this. He really did bring a positive environment in the locker room and a lot of the guys looked up to him.

The Baltimore Sun reports Ray Rice showed up to Ravens OTAs at "about" 205 pounds.

The plan is for Rice to play around 205 this season after checking in somewhere between 215-225 in 2013. According to reporter Aaron Wilson, Rice looks "a lot lighter" and quicker. Rice's weight is just a side issue, of course. He's facing a potential multi-game suspension for his February assault of his fiancée, whom he's since married.

I think Goodell suspends him an entire season. Dude straight up knocked out a chick in public. This is way worse than any substance abuse infraction IMO. He should be in prison.

Rotoworld:

The Ravens still have "high expectations" for fourth-round RB Lorenzo Taliaferro despite his off-field issues.
Taliaferro was arrested for two misdemeanors charges earlier this week, but his status with the Ravens remains unchanged. He's a candidate to open the season in a short-yardage and third-down role if Ray Rice is suspended. Bernard Pierce (shoulder) has been participating in OTAs and is on track to be ready for camp.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley believes Ray Rice will be given the opportunity to start when he returns from a likely forthcoming suspension.
Rice has not been suspended yet, but odds are he will face a multi-game ban sometime in the near future. Bernard Pierce should fill in for Rice during the suspension, and if he plays well enough could keep the job even when Rice returns. Hensley does not see that scenario playing out, however, and believes Rice will at least be given a shot to earn back the starting job. With so much uncertainty surrounding the Ravens' backfield, it is hard to trust either Rice or Pierce as starting fantasy options.

"The New York Post's Bart Hubbuch "keep(s) hearing" Ray Rice's suspension could span 4-6 games in connection with his offseason assault charge, or "maybe even more."

Hubbuch is hearing the discipline will be "significant." The NFL has received negative press for strict suspensions levied against pot smokers, while crimes viewed as more sinister like assaulting women get lesser discipline. Commissioner Roger Goodell could use Rice as an example to show the NFL will take hitting women more seriously. A 4-6 game suspension would swing the door wide open for Bernard Pierce, or Justin Forsett, or Lorenzo Taliaffero to run with the feature back job in new OC Gary Kubiak's running back-friendly offense."

LOL So somewhere between 4 and 16 games.

Expecting 4-6, but "maybe more". Just speculation at how ridiculous their predictions are...

You have to think they're going to want to push back hard against the narrative that the NFL cares more about players smoking weed than beating up women. If I've heard that 100 times, Goodell must have heard it a million.

And that press conference was a bad look for the NFL. So I wouldn't be surprised to see him lose half a season for this.

Rotoworld:

Bernard Pierce (shoulder surgery) is expected to be a full-go for the beginning of training camp.

Pierce is ahead of schedule in his rehab as he's been doing individual work during OTAs and minicamp. It leaves him with an excellent chance to run with the starting job out of the gate in new OC Gary Kubiak's run-based scheme. Ray Rice is facing a multi-game suspension and Pierce has a major talent edge on Justin Forsett/Lorenzo Taliaferro. Although Pierce regressed sharply last season, his rookie tape has us optimistic on his Year 3 outlook. He could very well end up playing ahead of Rice all season.

Ray Rice - RB - Ravens

According to ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley, Ray Rice has appeared "much lighter on his feet" at minicamp, after shedding nearly 20 pounds in the offseason.

Rice played last season in the 215-225 range. He reported to spring workouts at roughly 205. Rice measured 5-foot-8, 199 at the 2008 Combine. Hensley acknowledges it was a "rare sight to see" Rice eluding tacklers in the open field last year, but he did it "a couple times" at minicamp. Rice turned 27 in January. His biggest 2014 concern is an impending multi-game suspension.

We've heard literally nothing about Cierre Wood since they signed him. Guess that means he sucks? He was looking good for Houston prior to getting kicked off the team for rules violation...

I have an issue with that narrative being spread around social media. I can't imagine a situation where anyone thinks smoking weed is a worse crime than domestic assault. I think people forget the year long suspension for weed comes after the third infraction, not the first. Also, has it ever been confirmed that Rice actually punched or hit her and knocked her out? Are we sure she wasn't slapping the crap out of him and he pushed her off a little too hard and she hit her head into the wall or something? Not that it makes it right but it does make a difference. I think a 6 game suspension for a first time offense that was dropped in court and both parties are taking blame is fair and more harsh than a first time weed suspension.

Rotoworld:

The Baltimore Sun considers Bernard Pierce the favorite to open the season as the Ravens' starting tailback, assuming Ray Rice receives a multi-game suspension.

Pierce is expected to start, and work "in tandem" with rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro, likely in addition to Justin Forsett. This is just a prediction, of course. Pierce was limited throughout the spring while recovering from a pretty serious shoulder surgery. We're going to keep close tabs on him in training camp.

Ravens rookie RB Lorenzo Taliaferro's misdemeanor destruction of property and public drunkenness case has been continued to July 31.

Taliaferro's original date was Thursday, but his attorney got a continuance. The downside is Taliaferro may miss some early camp time to deal with his legal matters. Rookies report on July 17, and the Ravens' first full-squad practice is July 24. It's also possible Taliaferro will just send his lawyer, however. Taliaferro is competing for time in Baltimore's up-for-grabs backfield.

Bernard Pierce- RB - Ravens
Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome indicated he is anticipating a run-based offense under new OC Gary Kubiak.
Kubiak's Texans offenses were most successful when leaning on his zone-run game to set up designed vertical shot plays. "It’s very precise," said Newsome of Kubiak's scheme. "It’s physical. I think we’ll run the ball better, we’ll keep the ball more and we’ll have big plays." With Ray Rice facing a suspension, Bernard Pierce should get the first crack at Ravens lead-back duties.

Bernard Pierce- RB - Ravens
The Baltimore Sun calls Bernard Pierce (shoulder surgery) the "obvious favorite" to open the season as the Ravens' lead back.
The Sun questions whether Pierce will be utilized as an "every-down back," however, citing the 24-year-old's struggles in "blitz pick up and catching the ball out of the backfield." Justin Forsett excels in each of the latter areas. While Ray Rice is suspended, we may see Pierce used as Gary Kubiak's early-down workhorse and goal-line back, with Forsett playing on passing downs.

I agree with this. 4 games seems a good guess, with 6 being possible. Too high profile to be much less than 4 though.

Rotoworld:

Joe Flacco observed after spring practices that Ray Rice is "definitely in good shape."

"I dont know if hes any quicker or anything like that," said Flacco. "I can say he definitely looks good and hes running the ball well." Rice has shed about 20 pounds since the end of last season and hopes to bounce back after a career-worst year. The 27-year-old's biggest concern is a possible multi-game ban to open the season. The NFL is expected to hand down discipline shortly.

Ray Rice - RB - Ravens

PFT's Mike Florio says a multi-game suspension for Ray Rice "should be the assumption."

Rice has already visited the league office to discuss the assault charges stemming from an incident with his fiancee turned wife. He has no previous violations of the personal conduct policy, but it's possible Roger Goodell has seen surveillance video of Rice striking Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City casino. Projections for Rice's ban have ranged from two to six games. Josh Gordon is facing a year-long ban for repeated marijuana violations.

The only problem with this is that the NFL can always be heavy-handed when it comes to drugs and alcohol. It's easy to get people emotionally charged up about DUI, people killing people with their cars, drugs ruining lives, etc.

Now, domestic violence? Yes, it is bad. Very bad. Deplorable to most. But it is something that doesn't have the same impact (not trying to stir a pot but it simply doesn't). So many well-known people, along with all us common Joes, get a domestic call. Couple fight, things happen and the very first thing people in the media look for is if its a Tiger WOods story. Was he cheating. Was She? Were there drugs and alcohol (there they are again) involved? If none of the above are included, then it becomes last hour's news in no time because ultimately it is a he said/she said story where you can't blow into a breathalyzer. You can even show video of a guy punching a lady out. But you can show me one of a girl going ape-SH#@ on a guy too and when's the last time you saw a girl get into significant trouble for hitting a guy?

Just too many loose ends. Most people can say that was the reaction, not the action. That girl was doing this __________.

But in the end, what it ultimately comes down to is with each week of suspension, you are costing that player big $$$....his livelihood and the NFLPA can stand behind that easier than anything and even easier when the shield can't show "he drove drunk" or "his system said he was drunk, etc." Basically, these suspensions are tone setters and subjective and those usually don't fly as easy.

I expect 4 games and a lot of very well-thought out reasoning. But if he gets half a season or more, I think he plays 4-6 just waiting for a very convoluted appeal process. You can't take and annual salary away from a NFL player with a very short playing window without having some danged good reasoning, evidence.

Bernard Pierce - RB - Ravens
Bernard Pierce said he has a "knack" for new OC Gary Kubiak's kind of offense.
Pierce was a disaster last season, slogging through 16 games at a pathetic 2.86 YPC. But he was battling a litany of injuries that included problems with his shoulder, hamstring, knee and toe. Now he's fully healthy, back near his ideal playing weight and Ray Rice is facing a suspension. Pierce's extremely impressive rookie tape has us willing to take a shot on a bounce-back campaign.

Yahoo's Rand Getlin is "hearing" that Ray Rice's suspension will be for two games.

Getlin admits he hasn't been able to confirm this rumor and Rice hasn't been sentenced on the matter yet, so we're not setting it in stone. But if Rice does escape with a mere two-game ban, it's going to be a public relations nightmare for the NFL. He assaulted his fiancee (now wife), while Josh Gordon is facing a 16-game ban for marijuana violations. Bernard Pierce will be the feature back while Rice serves his suspension.Jul 24 - 9:34 AM

This is such a narrow minded way to look at things. Rice should probably get more than two games but it's his first offense unlike Gordon. Gordon is facing a year because of multiple offenses, not because the NFL punishes weed more severely than domestic abuse.

How many joints = domestic violence? Is there a number?

So I smoke weed often, does that make me a worse person than a guy who beats his wife? I think Gordon should be suspended, but how do you suspend him more for smoking weed? This should be interesting.

I would say bump Pierce, but he is not any good either.
You should probably be dropping Pierce... most people were expecting Rice to get more than 2 games.
Pierce will get at least 2 games to prove he deserves more playing time. He will have to loose the starting job, it will not be handed to Ray Rice for game 3. The Ravens might even add to the suspension once Rice completes Goddell's ruling, that is just speculation on my part, I haven't read that anywhere.

Ray Rice - RB - Ravens
NFL suspended Ray Rice for the first two games of the 2014 season.
Rice was arraigned on felony aggravated assault charges following an ugly April domestic incident with his fiancee (now wife) at an Atlantic City hotel. He avoided trial by completing a pretrial-intervention program, and this is his first violation of the league's personal conduct policy. Still, it's a bad look for the NFL as Rice gets off lightly while Josh Gordon faces a 16-game ban for marijuana. As for the on-field fallout, Bernard Pierce will serve as the feature back and quality RB2 against the Bengals in Week 1 and Steelers in Week 2. Rice will have to show improved form to wrestle back his starting job after looking done in 2013 (3.08 YPC).
