Chromebook -- Highly recommend (1 Viewer)

I think I'm going with the Acer C720. It's only 11" but that's not a big deal. Only $200 so that's a plus.

I think the only reason why people buy this iteration of a cheapo spybook is that you don't boot into Windows 8.
I think the only people that are paranoid about getting ads sent to them that are more relevant to them are people that somehow feel bad about investing in designer electronics that are 4x the cost of the competition that are "obsolete" in two years.

What are you so desperately afraid of people will find out if they do "spy" on you? Everyone watches porn. You will never run for President. Everyone on the internet is getting spied on. Relax.

Anyone catch that "scroogled" commercial with the pawn stars guys bashing the chromebook? Its laughable, two guys who couldn't know less about computers, good job microsoft.
I think it's a funny commercial and well made to target people that don't really understand the difference all that well.

The people that don't know the difference will also probably have a difficult time changing all the settings of every application on your computer(WINDOWS, adobe, etc) that panic and have all sorts of nag warnings if they can't update constantly so their definition of a "real laptop" is pretty funny.

Secondly, it's funny because Microsofts big push is now getting people to subscribe to Office as an online service and no longer treat it as an offline application that you purchase once and never have to spend $ on it again.

I picked up the 4gb version of the C720 for $250. I usually have about 10 browsers up, stream sports, etc...not sure if 2gb is satisfactory for that, but memory aside, I really, really like this thing. Only thing I would change is the ability to make the screen more bright. I know it would impact battery life, but even max brightness is a little dim for my taste. Size is perfect, slim and lightweight. Battery life is very good. Speed is great. Fan is very quiet. Even with 10 browsers open and pushing it hard it doesn't get hot to the touch. 8.5/10 and definitely recommended.

This really does feel like the future of computing.

Today I uploaded all of our digital "stuff" (mostly all of our photos and videos, but some other documents etc.) to our Spacemonkey cloud storage. We're already on Spotify for music; Gmail and Google Drive for e-mail, calendar, other docs and the like. Chrome as my web browser on all devices. Movies and TV on Netflix, HBOGo, etc. I'm now officially at the point where you could nuke all the computers we have in the house and I could just shrug and go out and get a new computer and be up and running with everything I care about in 5 minutes.

Love this Samsung Chromebook, but it'll be nice to upgrade to one of these other nice ones in a couple years that is super fast and has a killer screen. I'm struggling to figure out what more I really need on it, but whatever it is (4G built in? some other gizmo?), it'll be a cakewalk to transition into it.

All the 4gb I see are 300. With the general stuff we will do on it, I can't see it being worth the extra money for the 4gb. But I'm not a big computer guy.

yep I have the new HP14"er and I love it. Soeasy to use. Only drawback is the screen resolution. Not really bad,but its nothing like an iPad's screen. Maybe they can address that in future models.

Can you watch a movie from a network share with chromebook? Does the default media player handle all media types or is there vlc for this?

Yup. Great purchase for 30 bucks.

Yep, this is the one that I have. I like mine a lot too, seems like a tremendous value at $250.

Do all the HP 14 chromebooks come with the 200MB/month data plan?

-edit- nevermind, I found the answer

Looks like it is 50 bucks cheaper for the wifi only version. Probably worth 50 bucks for the data plan for 2 years though, right?

Acer C720 is perfect for couch based internet surfing. It is super zippy. For $250 new, I could not be happier.
Where did you find this for 250?

I played with the HP 14 today. I find the screen resolution to be terrible. Besides that, it seems very nice though. Thinking I want to go with the 11 inch with the better resolution. Although, is the HP the only data plan one?

interesting. no one has any issues with storing documents, pics, home movies in the cloud? security issues or concerns losing documents etc.?

I picked up a 4gb C720 on Amazon for $250. It appears to be unavailable right now. The 2gb version is available at Amazon for $199 and the 2gb touchscreen is now available for $299. After spending the last 2 years using a Macbook air, I am having a difficult time adjusting to the screen resolution/brightness. Everything else about this thing rocks though.

Scott McNealy/Sun years ago: The network is the computer.

I don't know how to answer that. I rarely use the 4G as I'm almost always in wifi range. I will say that one of the times I did use the 4G, it was slow... the TMobile coverage around me is pretty shotty.

Gotcha. Did you have to sign any sort of contract with Tmobile ?

I think that black one is an older version. the new HP 14 is either all white, or white with some fancy colored tops

If anyone runs across the Acer C720, 4 GB version for sale, please post it here. I want to pick one of those up

200mb is not much at all. That would be good for replying to an email while sitting on the train or checking a sports score while out camping. Definitely not enough to stream anything or surf heavily.

Bummer. Was hoping to access my companies cloud based inventory system and what not while out on the road.

$248.99 and you can get 5% off if you order through the NewEgg mobile app...
Wrong version. That is their older C710, not the C720

Do you have a smart phone? If so, check your data usage on that. My computer usage would most likely be more tied to wireless conectivity than my phone, and I rarely go over 200 MB on my phone unless I am streaming music a lot. Checking your email and searching the web does not use much data.

I use my Chromebook almost exclusively now when traveling. Netsuite, Box, Google Apps for Business, etc. About the only thing I have trouble with are large or very complex spreadsheets or oddball file types like old Publisher files. Between tethering on my phone or Wifi connections there aren't many places I can't work from.
