Betsy Devos....probably going to need her own thread. (2 Viewers)

You really think she's super religious?
Yes she is.

I think she thinks she’s actually doing good. I’m not sure she’s doing it for religious reasons, but who knows. She probably wasn’t vying for the position, just donated a lot and trump decided to throw her the job.
I agree, I don't think she is a movie villain. She's just totally wrong and has no real clue.

I honestly don't get it.  She's not terribly bright obviously or intellectual.

So odd.  How can you bilk people for a living (Amway) and then be religious.  Sometimes I swear the most religious people get the very least out of the Bible's lessons.  It's like they can't conceptualize at all.  They just hear that Jesus threw out the money lenders and nod...not comprehending the parable at all.

She married into Amway so she isn't behind it. However, people are very good at lying to themselves and convincing themselves of almost anything. She likely sees Amway as being a good company that provides jobs and products people need. I highly doubt she thinks it is a pyramid scheme.

Ofcourse I could be wrong, she could be a total criminal- it's just not my impression of her.

Right, she's just a stay at home parent. Born wealthy, never had to apply herself to anything. Married into even more money and had to do something with her life. She chose to use her efforts to improve schools. It's just that her view of improving schools is pretty narrow: private for profit business can do better than public and we need more religion in schools.

This is so true.  People are always the hero (or in Stealthycat's case the victim) in their own stories.

I'd imagine she's pretty impressionable.  She's most likely been told by her husband and relatives that capitalism is the cure for all woes.

I mean she grew up in a very wealthy family so I am sure she was raised to think her and her family were the captains of industry, not the robber barons.

eta: wealthty isn't really the right word, I mean parents were billionaires.

Or mercenaries....as it were.  They are security specialists.  Saving the poor folks.

I haven't literally chuckled out loud in a long time.  Good thing I wasn't drinking coffee when I read that.

He's Darth ####### Maul.
He is a very religious man...who happened to sleep with his nanny while his wife is dying of cancer, then he divorced her and married someone else. I don't know if he is Darth Maul. I think may have had good intentions in his mind with Blackwater. He certainly seems like a Bond villain though.

This isn't really Devos related but it's her old gang of GOP Michigan legislators dicking around with Michigan social studies standards.

Here are some of the great highlights:

- Reduce references to the NAACP to 1

- Eliminate teaching about the KKK

- Removal of Roe v Wade and mentions of LGTBQ, disabled and immigrants as minority groups. Instead it has been replaced with this:" teach how the expansion of rights for some groups can be viewed as an infringement of rights and freedoms of others"   Stealthy would like that one

- No more mentioning of "democratic core values" because it has the word democratic in it.

She is overseeing education more than running it. The States are free to pick their own standards.

Thanks for posting. If anyone else is in Michigan, you have until June 30 to be heard on this.

The original changes to the SS standards included no reference to KKK being anti-black but instead that it was anti-Republican and that because most black people were Repblicans that is why the KKK targeted them.

And Colbeck (the Republican legislator in charge of the new standards committee) wants it to be apolitical. Which is why he didn't include any Democratic legislators in the process.

Kind of lost in this is the fact that it lists “examples” to talk about when covering different topics, but leaves the door open for teachers to add what they see relevant. I think this leaves a dangerous opening for people like that white supremacist teacher or for religious beliefs, creationist theory, and other ideas counter to factual science to indoctrinate.

Well it works both ways. It also allows teachers to work in things that were removed (like what the KKK was and why it was bad). The truth is, in the end, each school district and teacher still have freedom to really cover things they want to cover how they want to cover them. I don't think we want the State telling everyone exactly what examples should be covered. I prefer more freedom and not less. If a specific district wants to narrow things down, so be it, but lets keep the power as local as possible.

Yes, I suppose I should have faith that such a provision would be treated properly at the administrative level. I just don’t like leaving the legal door open for some “nationalist” or whatever they call themselves or some other nut job to hide behind.

Those doors are open anyway. In the end, a teacher can teach whatever they want. It's up to the administration to monitor it and make sure it fits with the standards.

Betsy DeVos’s $40 million yacht untied from dock, set adrift: http://hill.cm/iOf2hbM
I hold a deep hatred for this administration and anyone involved in it, and she's one of the worst.  This is wrong, though.  Destruction of a person's property makes the person committing the act look bad, takes away from the message they're trying to send, and gives fuel to the other side.

If they had taken a bunch of sledgehammers to it I'd agree but this seems pretty harmless.

Overall agree however this does get her property in the media. Maybe saying someone is worth X Billion dollars doesn't ring with some people. Maybe showing the people her $40 million dollar yacht will open some eyes. Not saying this is the best way but it might.

Fair enough, but hang a banner next to it.  Call the local newspaper.  Protest in front of it.  There are a lot of other ways to draw attention to it without doing damage.

Ok, i just want to know, and I suppose I’ll go google this, but wtf could a $40 million yacht possibly have that would make it worth $40 million????? Think of a $40 mil house....$40 mil could probably buy yourself a personal rocket to outer space. And this is one of their many vessels, and those are just the boats. A lot of Americans have trouble affording one car and don’t own their house. I can’t fathom that kind of wealth. I know they’ve done a lot of philanthropic work, their name is plastered on all of it, but dang. How do you even get to $40 mil? If someone handed me $40 mil and said pimp me out a boat I feel like I’d have like at least $35 mil left over. You could buy the Edmund Fitzgerald, raise it out of the water, fix it up with everything you can think of, and pay Calvin Johnson to drive it for a year.

Create a very successful pyramid scheme. Also, there is a person who owns a yacht estimated at over $4 billion in value. It isn't that big but it's build out of gold and platium. It also has an actual T-Rex built inside of it- like from real T-Rex bones. It's a very nice ship.

Apparently that $40 million yacht sails under the Cayman Islands flag so they don't have to pay taxes on it. https://www.newsweek.com/betsy-devos-cayman-islands-taxes-yacht-flag-foreign-donald-trump-america-1061960

How American.
Please let the billionaire reckoning begin. We all know people with a lot of money can afford things like tax attorneys and do this sort of stuff to avoid paying their fair share, let alone trickle anything down. Then we cut their tax liability on top of it.

Devos funded Michigan Freedom Fund has spent $1.2 million to defeat Prop 2 in Michigan. Prop 2 is a citizen initiated amendment to the State Constitution that takes away the party in power's ability to redraw districts. The amendment would create a council made of 4 Republicans, 4 Democrats and 5 Independents. This is just another example of the attempts by the Devos family to control the State of Michigan.
