and like many things in soccer, we have a rule to prevent this but the refs almost never call it.

Time wasting yes. but a rule against a keeper catching the ball and falling over for now reason?  Never have seen it called.  Keepers get away with so much.

Did they change the rule on how long they can hold the ball?  Seems like its getting longer and longer.

no, I meant it does not matter if he falls or not.

He has 6 seconds to release the ball from his hands after catching.  The refs unfortunately never count the 6 seconds or if they do it is after he gets himself back on his feet.

Keepers could fall over as much as they wanted to as long as they stick to the 6 seconds but since the refs don't call it, too many keepers milk the falling over thing.

When I'm playing with my son taking his free kicks in goal, I frequently fall over just due to the extreme concentration it takes me just to catch the ball.

Thats what I thought.  Problem is the refs arent calling this.  I've counted 10-12 seconds on a lot of keepers.

yup, as with many things in the sport, it takes the simplest of things to fix but FIFA could care less.

Look at how long it took FIFA to fix the free kick issue with players constantly encroaching.   The fix was simple, quick, and works and no one even thinks twice about it.

Salah scores more goals, Kane claims goals.

Neymar gets more media, Kane rolls on the ground.

Always playing catch up this guy....

He'll always have a career available fronting a Tom Petty cover band.

I #### you not, I’m at the beach and sitting on the patio with my family.  Guy comes over and yells “Sterling party of 5”.  Somebody yells out “#### first touch!”.

It was me who yelled it.

All keepers do it.  Hate it in the EPL, hate it in the WC.

Don't like players kicking the ball away after the whistle either.

They get yellow cards for kicking the ball away like that. At least in youth soccer in my area.

no matter who wins the final, some one will walk away with the Champions League and WC double in the same year.

Modric for Croatia or Varane for France

England became the only team in WC history to lose* a semi final when leading in the second half.

*Italy also failed to advance in this same situation in 1990 but that was on pk's and goes in the book as a draw.

England also became the only team to ever lose a WC semi-final to the second smallest nation to reach a WC final.

Corluka is asked to stop for English press, smiles and just says: "It's not coming home!" Keeps walking.

I don't know what surprises me most.

  1. There's a Wikipedia page listing all the Golden Generations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_generation
  2. How many of the Golden Generations didn't really win all that much
  3. That Bosnia and Herzegovina are currently in the midst of their Golden Generation
  4. The current crop of Croatian isn't included

I am torn on England's future.

On the one hand this is a very strong young team with lots of talent coming up in the pipeline.

On the other hand, they are likely to never see a WC break for them like this ever again.  Everything went as perfect as possible in their match ups.

It's 'McKinnie', not 'McKinnic'.

England has a thriving (albeit top heavy) league setup, strong academy programs, recent successes at the U17 and U20 levels and a decent current crop of talent.  Its population is greater than Argentina or Spain.  Much of that has been true over the past 28 years though.

It's hard to imagine a knockout draw opening like this again but who knows how a 48 team tournament will play out.  They did lose to the two best sides they faced in Russia.

There's a temptation to move them up a rank from the best of the outsiders to the bottom rung of the favorites but I'll take a rain check until Euro 2020.  They'll probably revert to losing on penalties in the first knockout round.

As Vranskjo said postgame....press them and they revert to the long ball game.  They may have the talent in the MF, but they didn’t show it in this tournament.
