Two senior years and you still didn't learn how to count?

Heh. Whoops. Substitute out Hanoi Rocks for Drivin' N' Cryin...
:penalty:

have you forgotten the charisma of Michael Monroe?!?  and the tunes!  "Boulevard of Broken Dreams DaDa Da Da" - "Don't You ... Ever ... Leave ME"

Tough for us old guys to remember, but in no particular order from 1970-71:

Sticky Fingers

Zep III

Paranoid

4 Way Street

All Things Must Pass

(although, upon reconsideration, Tea for the Tillerman may bump Paranoid)

1989/1990 During school year

Digital Underground - Sex Packets

Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation

Rob Base - The Incredible Base

Bell Biv Devoe - Poison

Heavy D - Big Tyme

I guess a closer reading would have helped...now I have to wonder should I do it from my 2019 POV or how I saw it as a 17 year old
I was having trouble with that, too.

eta* Went with seventeen year-old me

The urgency with which Mike Monroe could make ever leaving him seem disastrous for both parties definitely involved the use of speedballs, and not the Springsteen kind.

I looked at it from the perspective of the albums I most played and enjoyed around my senior year

99/00

Marshall Mathers- Eminem

Supreme Clientele- Ghostface

2001- Dr. Dre

Enema of the State- Blink 182

The Battle of Los Angeles- Rage Against the Machine

1985-86

AC/DC - Who Made Who

Big Audio Dynamite - This is Big Audio Dynamite

Motely Crue - Theater of Pain

Genesis - Invisible Touch

The Firm - The Firm

These belong on the list above (probably at the top), but I did not discover/appreciate until later...

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Paul Simon - Graceland

Cyndi Lauper  - True Colors

There were a couple of compilations released then as well...not sure if we would count those...Bob Dylan Biograph, Best of the Doors, Billy Joel Greatest Hits Vol I/II, Cars Greatest Hits.  I probably listened to these cassettes more than any of the specific ones listed above.

ETA...Just realized Motley Crue's Theater of Pain was an '85 release.  I added it and bumped off Dire Straits Brothers in Arms.

I went for the latter, but pretty similar for me. Still love and listen to those albums...that was all the music that helped formed my current tastes, so yeah- pretty similar.

R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
U2 - Achtung Baby

Another 1985/1986 here.

Going off the school calendar year (Sept. 1985-June 1986).  Looking back, not a tremendous amount of depth. These mostly weren't my speed at the time, but IMO now the best/my favorites:

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party

Peter Gabriel - So

The Replacements - Tim

My top 5 from 1977 when I graduated high school:

Aja - Steely Dan
American Stars and Bars - Neil Young
Book of Dreams - Steve Miller Band
CSN - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Slowhand - Eric Clapton

In retrospect there are some that I appreciate more now than I did back then (e.g. Rumours- Fleetwood Mac, Animals-Pink Floyd, etc)

two glaring omissions on my list, though i will say that leaving off Samhain's "Initium" bothers me more.

TripleA know his stuff! I would replace Tom Petty with Alice in Chains - Dirt, songs from all five of these albums still play regularly on my shuffle.

1991/1992

Pearl Jam - Ten
Metallica - Metallica
Nirvana - Nevermind
Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I/II (counting this as one)

Alice in Chains - Dirt

1986/87

Tesla - Mechanical Resonance

Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

Cinderella - Night Songs

Megadeth - Peace Sells....But Who's Buying?

U2 -  The Joshua Tree (not at the time but looking back now)

Honorable Mention: WASP - Inside the Electric Circus

2000/2001 was a terrible time for good music.  Spotting the top 3 was easy.

Tool - Lateralus

OutKast - Stankonia

System of a Down - Toxicity

But 5?  Oof.

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory, I guess.

And...while I certainly wouldn't argue for this being one of the 5 best, it's probably in my favorite 5 - and somewhat guilty pleasure - but it's really only here because music sucked that year

Papa Roach - Infest

Looking back on it now ... hip-hop and dance music were pushing metal/hard rock off the stage by my senior year, fulfilling a trend portended by License to Ill two years earlier :

'88-'89

Vivid, Living Colour
Colors, original motion picture soundtrack
Operation: Mindcrime, Queensryche
It Takes Two, Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock
Forever Your Girl, Paula Abdul (No apologies, those tunes were EVERYWHERE that year. And we liked 'em.)

I meant to add:

While Appetite for Destruction was -- by the book -- was released in late 1987, it caught on somewhat slowly and had a ton of staying power. Those songs were still part of the essential soundtrack of my senior year, bumping right up against "Patience" of off G'n'R Lies ... which WAS released during my senior year.
