*** Official *** Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker (1 Viewer)

  • the "humor" was bad - ie the opening scene
  • the Luke force projection thing
  •  the Finn/Rose stuff was terrible (mostly the side mission)
  •  the blue cows and the annoying porgs
  •  the lack of vision overall for this triology
Not saying I agree with all of those, and I am sure I am forgetting some.
Just watched it last night.  The Luke force projection was, to me, the coolest thing in Star Wars history.

To me, there are a few things I didn't like about TLJ.  Most of these take up about ten minutes of film time.  I assure you, you can take any STar Wars movie out there and find 10-20 minutes of total crap...it's kind of a tradition at this point.

  • Your mother joke by Poe at the beginning.  I laughed when it happened, but it seemed a bit "from our world" and not from the Star Wars world.  Still a funny scene to watch now, but I think it turned people off right from the start.
  • Luke milking a cow boob and then catching a giant weird-looking fish.  That was just weird.  I get the intention, show that Luke is just focused on his domestic life.  But it was...weird.
  • Finn/Rose casino mission.  Fans didn't connect with Rose, she expounded on the plight of slavery and the animals...and while those are valid points, it seemed a bit out of place in the middle of a rush to save the resistance.  But hey, the scene wasn't that long and the whole casino scene wasn't really that bad.
  • The weird stutter by Benicio Del Toro.  To me, it was so unnecessary and forced.
  • Leia floating back to space.  This one really turned off a lot of fans.  I honestly don't know what to think, but does my opinion matter? The force can allow the most powerful to do all sorts of crazy things including float.  Why shouldn't it allow that?  Technically it's possible, but I think that particular scene breaks the laws of physics in a way that even a space fantasy movie (in which characters have magical powers) struggled to pull off.

So 5 scenes.  All comprising about ten minutes of screen time.  Trust me, we can take any star wars movie and find ten minutes of crap or unnecessary side junk.

In the end, I think Rian Johnson and TLJ take a lot of crap for what was a very good movie.  Fan expectations ruined TLJ. Fans were ready for a movie of Luke kicking tail, didn't get it and were angry.  Plus we live in an era of everyone wanting to have a hot take and label movies as failures and "epic fails".

From a pure cinematic standpoint, Force Awakens and TLJ are so visually stunning.  It's tough to go back and watch the OT after this one.  Just ask your kids. Most kids are bored in the originals.

The first spoiler free fan reviews are out from people who watched the World Premier tonight.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker first reactions: 'Blown away...'
Very cool, thanks for sharing.  That has me quite hopeful for the movie.  I'm a guy that generally likes movies, so the fact that so many appeared to have loved it, is positive.

The last review is typical of "nonsense" reviews that I generally ignore.  "Choices that don't track" - proof that he wants things to go a certain way and is annoyed when they don't.  "Ignored details that are missed."  Negative folks are always going to claim there are things they never answered.  But they are never going to answer all questions in the main films. It would be absurd if they do.

The fact that many of the non-spoiler reviews that I've read have claimed that this is going to start a lot of conversation leads me to believe that there will be some big unanswered questions coming out of this, which is totally normal.  Because even though this is being touted as "the end of the skywalker saga", it's not the end of Star Wars. They'll be making movies for the next 100 years. Of course some questions won't be answered.

They paid 100b credits for this franchise - they have to keep it open ended.  Lucas hinted there would be 9 moves which if you stop and think about it made him all that $$.  Gave disney something to buy.

They could do a “madilorian” with Rey after this if they wanted too (assuming she lives).

Sidebar:  i posted this in the Disney thread but the “rise of the resistance” ride that opened up in Orlando last week is the best ride I’ve ever been on ever and by a very wide margin.  If you are even a small Star Wars fan it’s jaw droppingly good.

The dumbest criticism of TLJ is when people criticize Luke’s force projection saying it came out of nowhere and how could he do that because we haven’t seen any Jedi do that before.

I mean, just about every Star Wars movie has a Jedi doing something we haven’t seen before. Yoda lifting an x wing out of water in Empire? Lame! We’ve never seen a Jedi do that before! The emperor shooting lightning in ROTJ? Force ghosts? No way! So out of left field. What a crap movie!

I didn’t like TLJ much but I don’t get the criticism either, I thought that was one of the few really good twists/things they did in that movie.

I think the biggest legit criticism when this is all said and done will be how Johnson took what JJ Abrams did in TFA and turned it on it’s head for TLJ. And now Abrams’ has to pick up the pieces in ROS. Abrams finally hinted that he kind of felt this way in a recent interview.

For the most part, I really enjoyed TLJ. I liked TFA too but didn’t like how it had essentially the same plot as the original trilogy. So I enjoyed the very different path TLJ took. But that said, I’m a bit cautious in my optimism for ROS because having two directors conflict like that on a trilogy can’t ultimately be that good of a thing. I don’t believe for a second that the trilogy is turning out how Abrams thought it would from the start. I’ll probably end up enjoying it regardless though.

Correct.  I get the different tone and paths that they wanted with the side movies of R1 and Solo, but just didn't understand the seeming lack of vision (or if they did, it didn't seem to be executed) for this trilogy of movies.

It almost feels like Star Wars was lacking a Kevin Fiege type of person who sat in on the writers meeting to make sure the pieces connected.  Abrams and Johnson both made decent movies but I agree that they did not appear to be in sync.

I am happy that Abrams gets the last word because he might be able to slightly retcon what he needs from TLJ to tell the ending he wanted.

The reviews from the test screenings and the world premier have me very excited.  I may go into a black out starting on Thursday.  Last year the movie got spoiled for me while watching twitch of all things.

Didn't realize this was already here, got the last seat for the Thursday 6pm showing in iMax.

Thanks for looking out.

Yep, that was the coolest scene I'd ever seen.  I think this year I'll skip going online after I've read it.  I want to enjoy it for a few weeks before I read bored angry people and their reactions to a movie.

I thought the same after the movie.  After watching all 8 over the past few weeks, I didn't feel the same while watching TLJ last night.  I can't think of one major plot point that Rian Johnson flipped other than the Rey's parents thing (which many still feel is unresolved).  Rian didn't unilaterally make the movie, he had to get approval.  While I'd prefer that hte same person write the 3 movies, it really didn't go that far off.

Was there a bit of disappointment with Luke and his story?  For me yes.  But my disappointment regarding Luke was always with Force Awakens.  We never saw Luke team up with Han, which I really was a bit sad about.  FA and Abrams are the ones that stuck Luke on an island for years, so Johnson had little choice but to write it that way, imo.

No spoiler here as I haven't read any.  ...I think the Rey's heritage story could have been a misdirection.  Other than that, there isn't much to fix, imo.  And if that's what Rey is, it's not really that big of a deal imo.

He kind of flipped things by killing off Snoke, but that's also a favorite scene of mine.  I had no problem with Luke being a hermit.  It's what Jedi seem to do when the #### hits the fan (ie: Yoda and Obi Wan).  The only problem I had was with Luke going in to try to kill Kylo as he slept.  That seemed out of character.  This is a guy who saw his own dad turn from the dark side to the light, but as soon as he senses darkness from Kylo, he goes to sucker punch him in his sleep?

And the Rey's parents issue absolutely is unresolved IMO. Why are we supposed to just believe Kylo when he says they were nobodies?  He's trying to deceive her to join his side.

Im excited to see it but I have a bad feeling about this based on that variety story.  Going in with low expectations

As long as one don’t go into this movie expecting a damn near religious experience, I expect it to be great.

Yeah it's funny what Star Wars fans expect from their movie.  Avengers is a great point.  Almost everyone agrees Endgame was a great conclusion.  It was fun, exciting and wrapped it up well.

In fact, you'll see many Star Wars critics slam Disney for not being more like Avengers and having a tight story and a planned out arc.

Endgame is a movie in which they literally went back in time and changed the past in order to write themselves out of the hole they were in.  Imagine how mad Star Wars fans would be if that happened?  Yet Endgame is beloved.

The Critics reviews are released tomorrow.  I won't be reading these but I do like to check on the general flow of them on Rotten Tomatoes to see if they are general positive.

Did they do that to write themselves out of a hole, or was the time travel part of the plan or in the comics.

I mean, it didn't seem to be much of a mystery that they were setting up Ant-man to have a big role in Part 2.

Endgame wasn't bad but it wasn't great. Definitely a letdown from the awesome Infinity War.

And using time travel to resolve the plot WAS a cheap & lazy solution.

As expected, the critical reviews so far are mixed.

The general thoughts are we get some answers, get fan service but that Abrahams tried to pack two movies into one and things got congested.

Personally I like that. Also been reading similar that a lot happened and it takes awhile to digest it.

Reviews are saying that the movie did nothing bold but that it still has a satisfying ending to please the fans.  This is perfectly fine with me since it's pretty much exactly what ROTJ successfully did.

Sounds great.

I am sure if you are critically reviewing the film it won’t stand up to those kind of standards. If you are a Star Wars nerd it sounds great. Excited to see it.

"Can't wait"

You cant be a Star Wars nerd and critically review the film?
It's the people who find stupid things to criticize like "We've never seen a jedi do anything like that!!"  or "We've never seen a ship run out of fuel, how can they use ship fuel as a plot point!!?!"

My guess is that people who go into it looking to enjoy a film will have a good time.

The people who go in wanting to critique every scene are likely going to hate it.  You can see the pre bias already building in the people who have hated on Star Wars for a while now.  Nothing is going to change here.

These dont have to be two separate things.

What’s going to be funny to me is the people ripping it for having a low critical score while also hating last Jedi which had a high one. Should be a fun dance.

I agree they don't but more times than not they are.  It is what it is.  I would love for every one to just go and enjoy it with their friends and family but I doubt that is going to happen.

We have people already in just the FFA already sharpening their swords based on reviews and leaks.

I am just happy my daughter is home from college and can't wait to go see it with my wife and I.  We are all likely to have a great time.

Exactly! Saw it with wife and 2 boys (14 and 9) and we came out all smiles.

Then post-game convos with co-workers had the swords out for half the folks, eager to chop it to bits.

I enjoyed the hell out of it. Enjoy it with your family, NewlyRetired.

Not mixed.  Pretty bad.  But that might not be a bad thing for us

It’s currently at 59%.  That’s basically the definition of mixed.
Rottentomatoes ratings are misleading though.  A film can be at 100% for example, but all the reviews are a C+.  It's a pass or fail system.

In this case it doesn't mean that 59% of the reviewers liked it.  If you read the reviews, most if not all say it's meh at best.  Not many at all are coming out saying its great.

I tried to read one review that claimed to be non-spoiler and there were spoilers...so I’m not going to be reading any. I’ve read 5-6 fans that loved it (on here, on Reddit and twitter,) and one fan that didn’t like it.

I admit the low RT rating and bad reviews has me real nervous.  I desperately want this to be a good film.  I’m pretty easy-going and love all the characters so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.

Oh I'm watching it regardless.  Keep expectations low and you wont ever be disappointed
