*** Official *** Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker (1 Viewer)

Given that you have TLJ below the entire set of prequels your opinion on Skywalker is currently invalid.
TLJ may be better as a stand alone movie, but it essentially ruined this trilogy. I need to rewatch everything but TLJ just created a lot of story problems and wasted time which really took away from this final film. The trilogy is almost pointless. Awakens set a nice stage and then it was just forgotten.

Prequels at least had a story that made some sense (holes in it, poor dialogue, and some not great execution at times aside ....)

once we can type here without spoilers I have some stuff I wanted to point out or ask.

And ultimately this is/was the big issue.  Should have had one set of writers and directors and given them the keys to the castle to do all three movies.

And, the lightsaber duels were much better in Ep. 1,2,3 then in these last three.
Who thought reviving the Emperor was going to be akin to Weekend at Bernies? Not me.

Speaking of lightsabers ....

How did Maz have the anakin/luke saber in obi-wan’s chest in her basement?

why was Rey “connected” to it?

I get why Kylo was — it was Vader’s

IT WAS NOT LUKE’S. LUKE MADE HIS GREEN ONE. STOP CALLING IT LUKE’S.

the blue saber was destroyed in TLJ. Now it was back together. Why not have R2 reveal the green saber to Rey mid-film showing she was worthy of it now ....

then the ending makes more sense ....

I was generally happy with how the BIG story arc was resolved but how they got there in the film was more hit and miss for me. There were stretches of the movie that I really enjoyed and others that just felt slightly off. I’ll need to rewatch it but right now think it was probably the worst of the three new films, but was still plenty of fun.

At the end, when the Ewoks are shown, they missed a awesome opportunity. Should have started, in order, showing Naboo with Jar Jar, then showing Kimino or Geonosis, then, Coruscant, then skip Tatooine, show Hoth, then Endor, then Jakku, then Tatooine where Rey looks on.
Like it or not, if you’re gonna show Ewoks, you need to show Naboo. I mentioned in the other thread a little but George Lucas’ two trilogies were better stories than these three (7,8,9).
Well, they were in Endor so the Ewoks made the most sense. They would be witnessing the final battle.

That was Wicket. They brought Willow back to play Wicket. But, they could have shown places from each episode and Jar Jar, like him or not, played a part in the saga. Jar Jar, Boss Nass, and Naboo. Hell, the Emperor was from Naboo too.

I don't know, they already did that in the re-release. I was cool just seeing the Ewoks since we were in their backyard, but I can see what you mean.

Seems a bit of a harsh opinion.  Pointless?  I can see saying that 8 is pointless.  But a massive battle of good vs evil is what movies are all about.  Rey growing from a scavenger to a beast.  It's pointless in the same way that 4-6 were pointless I guess.

It didn’t add anything to the Skywalker Saga that these 3 movies were billed as completing really.

Instead of Rey saying “Skywalker” at the end... answering a lady that appeared out of thin air, Rey should have said “Palpatine” with a little redness in her eyes. Would have left audiences like, “WTF!!”, the Dark Side prevails.

It was a solid entertaining movie.  To be fair, I just watch movies and try not to think much during them.

I judge movies on whether i get an itching to look at my phone during a movie.  Was never tempted during this one.

same here. And I dissect the FX work, which makes me an absolute pleasure to watch a movie with ;)

No they definitely should not have done that.

Enjoyed it. Way better than the reviews. But this new trilogy has always lacked the cast chemistry of the original three films. Not a deal breaker but imho the greatest problem with the movies.

I still had fun though. I can’t believe I’ve just watched the last Star Wars movie ever!  EVER!

Maybe I should not have watched Ep 7 of the Mandalorian the night before seeing this, but the Mandalorian is so much better than the saga finale. RoS was pretty meh.

I know I need to go see this, but I am pretty apathetic.  I just don’t give a #### about any of these characters.  I’m just hoping not to leave the theater annoyed by it all.

At least I have The Clone Wars final season to look forward to.  And The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian and Rogue 1 are saving the franchise as far as I'm concerned.

It's been an overall disappointing transition to Disney IMHO.

How do we hand the keys to the Star Wars kingdom over to Favreau or Edwards??  Basically, that's what needs to happen.

My family had a blast.  Very fun night out.  The whole theater cheered the ending.

Happy to see JJ throw out some love to the animated series.  Both Kanan and Asoka's voices are heard as well as the Ghost showing up again multiple times in the space battle.

Under next to impossible circumstances, the reused footage of Leia was integrated extremely well.  If you didn't know before hand it was really hard to tell.

Agree.  If i didn't know she was dead woulda never known it was reused footage.  Critical Star Wars fans are obv going to bash her scenes, but they feel required to find flaws in everything.

I didn't read any reviews beforehand, but I saw a few panning the movie, and I'm here to say they were wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Yes, there are/were questions, but overall it was a good movie! A nice way to close out the Skywalker series, but personally I'd like to see where the story goes from here.

I'm not a big fan but will eventually see the movie some day, probably on HBO but I love the drama that surrounds the new releases and love reading threads like this, even if I read spoilers.

I loved it.
I envy you. I wish I loved it.  Just felt the story was all over the map.  Every star destroyer having a cannon equivalent to the Death Star cheapened the Death Star.  The whole empower arc came out of nowhere and was rushed. Rey is palpatine grand daughter.  What how why?

was just a shotgun or random stuff that didn’t add anything to the overall story and was weird.

Guess he didn't pull out.

This movie was GOOD.

I loved it and will happily admit there was a lot of wait who just did what now moments. Don’t care though, seeing it again Sunday.

I only have one real quibble and then an open-ended question that I personally feel can be answered two or three ways. Was a good conclusion to the galactic resistance fighting for their freedom.

In the novels, they have weapons that make the Death Star look very weak by comparison, I think they actually have weapons that make actual stars go nova, wiping out entire systems.

The quibble: the rallying of the galaxy did not feel earned. I would have liked to see a galvanization of resistance sentiment. "Doing it my way" would have killed off either Chewie or R2D2 and used them as a martyr of hope for a better tomorrow. Maybe this was Leia's role to fill? Who knows.

The question: At the end of the movie, the very very end, is Rey a Jedi?

My piping hot take is that no, indeed she is not. Nor is she Sith. Instead, Rey Skywalker is the Balance of the Force.

The term "balance" has always been misunderstood by much of the fan base (it was poor wording choice on Lucas's part imo).

Balance does not mean equal good and evil,  or equal light and dark.

Balance is a term specifically used by Jedi to represent a harmonious good/light state.  Balance, in Jedi terms, means no dark/evil influence at all.

i enjoyed all three of the new films for different reasons.

But I will acknowledge I think the arc story would have been better if JJ wrote all three movies.  It felt like a bunch of items that were put into this movie could have been expanded upon in TLJ but Johnson clearly had other ideas.

Pretty meh. Jealous of people that loved it. Ending was good. Way too much going on though.

Enough of this Adam Driver guy.

I never knew that! Thank you, seriously.

Kinda makes my interpretation of the series as a whole quite different tbh.

Hope every one caught the Anthony Daniels human cameo.  It was pretty cool of Abrams to put him on screen as himself after being the only actor to appear in all 11 movies  (he had a cameo in Solo as a Wookie.  The other 10 movies as 3PO).
John Williams too :)

I saw it last night and I am not going to say it wasnt good or that I didnt like it but................the level of "fan service" that was shoved down our throats was just a bit over the top.

I mean it could have went dark early (arrggghhhhhhh) on but they quickly pivoted and then you just know how the rest of the movie was going to go.

I get it was the end of the series per se but it was just tied up way too neatly.

That said I am going to see it again because I am a nerd

I'm still reeling from not understanding the meaning of "Balance" tbh.

Really makes me think.
I had that discussion last night, I always thought balance meant that if there was the light side, there'd have to be an equal force on the dark side. Though I guess the meaning of the word changes when talking about an individual.

I liked Episode 9 as a ‘movie’ experience.  But I can’t help but feel like after the most recent trilogy, there was simply way too much of a ‘fly by the seat of our pants’ creative feel to the whole process which resulted in a lot of fat and wasted time on screen.  Unfortunate.
